I saw a remarkable video of a calf who got a fishing boat’s attention by persistently tugging on a rope held by one man-when they saw nothing amiss, wildlife rescue was called and followed him. Rescue divers found his mother entangled in a buoy. The pod was so grateful once she was freed, they followed the boat to shore, breaching Witt delight. One presented one of the men with a huge fish she had freshly killed as a thank you. Whales attacking boats is on the rise. They know who is responsible for noise and hazardous garbage and injurious motors. Yet they rarely attack diving humans. We need to be more respectful and stop trashing their home.

Ha, wrong whale here though--this is a humpback, which while feeding (as in this case) or breaching could land on or sink a small boat. Ahab's opponent was a sperm whale (and a mutant albino one at that), the largest toothed whale and predator on earth. Sperm whales in the olden bad days of whaling did have a record of ramming and sinking whaling boats/ships (good on them, total self-defense) like the Essex, an incident that has been written about and made into films.

probably not, only because the boat was small and not moving. Ship strikes are a MAJOR cause of deaths for big whales, however. Even a 200ton blue whale (the biggest creature that's ever lived) is no match for a 200,000 ton freighter or tanker going 20 knots. This was a smaller humpback that typically don't weigh more than 50-60tons or so.

You could tell it didn't mean to. It just blindly surfaced to do its dive again and it didn't approximate its trajectory vs the boat, it was focused on its food it was trying to catch. If people can't handle these random occurrences, they should stay out of the natural environment of other species.
