In the town I grew up in they had a few small, enclosed, 1 man plows that had a working width of the side walks. These things went up and down the sidewalks on major roads. Once the sidewalks on the main roads were clear they would begin turning down side streets in the suburbs where everyone lived and get those. There's no reason other towns can't do that same thing. These tiny plows are no bigger than a golf cart, they can't be that expensive.

I do agree, but they are very expensive and what city workers are paid, there are just not enough resources. Especially if it's a weekend or a holiday. Imagine the price. I remember the same as a young kid, but things were different then. Money and economy.

Peabody has a sidewalk plow operated by the DPW. I used to shovel the sidewalk in front of my house years ago before the city started to do it.

No citizen in the State of Massachusetts should be held responsible to shovel any sidewalk or road that public property due to the fact the State spends and blows tons of money yearly and over time on plenty of wasted & useless stuff. Use and budget the money wisely! Cut back on those big salaries!

Crazy cause there’s all kind of taxes in Massachusetts that can be used for this instead of fines for property owners, like property tax, sales tax, cannabis tax, state paycheck tax, yearly vehicle tax and prepared meal tax but instead they want to to do the shoveling or pay someone to do it. if not you’ll pay fines!!

I'm 75 and have a snow removal service in the winter. It's expensive! I called the senior citizen's office to see if they had any way they could help. Reply: There should be someone in your neighborhood who could help shovel? Who? Reply: Check around. Yah! The responsibility for clearing my driveway and pourches I know is mine, but the city has sidewalk plows, so why can't they do the streets with frequent walker's like mine? Also, why do they do some of the sidewalks and skip a street and do another? Winter is tough for all of us.

So If i'm responsible for someone falling outside on the sidewalk in front of my house because of not being cleaned, who is responsible when My back goes out and I fall on the sidewalk while shoveling, injuring myself? Hmmm. The town forces me into a situation where I get injured on town property?

Ten or fifteen minutes? Are you joking? You clearly haven’t shoveled a sidewalk.

But if you are the state of Massachusetts you don’t have to clear any snow and make the excuse there’s not enough workers. Typical do as I say and not as I do dictatorship

They are not 'asking everybody to do their part'. There would be no fine if they were. Soon enough the state will own all the property anyway.

those are two contradicting statements. also, they ARE asking people to do " their part" , did you not watch the video?

In NH I always shoveled my 40ft of frontage for decades…it’s New England… once in a decade my neighbor shoveled it…Twenty years later, I still remember the kindness.

My neighborhood residents all park on the sidewalk in front of our home. My side also has a 'no parking ban' during winter & Worcester recently placed a 'no parking on sidewalk' ban, however, it is NOT enforced so therefore, we do not shovel the sidewalk that abuds our property 🧏‍♀️ Worcester could do better but chooses not to.

I live in western Mass and had to cancel an important Dr appointment because I use a walker and the city where my appointment is doesn't maintain anything. It's quite a long walk inside and my walker would never make it. So I do believe people and businesses alike should help if they're able to. I live in a culdesac, and my husband does not only our property, but the sewers, sidewalks and the circle itself. In the winter he shovels all around it and In the summer he mows it. So all our neighbors can walk their dogs safely. I've never seen one neighbor do it and they're far younger and more able than my husband. He even goes to the neighbor across the street if he's out of town and snowblows his. He's never said ty. I'm not sure how I feel about fining people for not doing public property. I do think each neighbor should take a turn. Professional offices/businesses should definitely be responsible for their sidewalks. JMO.

The lawyer did not explain the legal rationale behind the government forcing a private citizen to do work on public property for free. Why not measure the total length of sidewalks in the city and assign an equal length section to each citizen to shovel?

Who is responsible for clearing the sidewalks in front of, and around, state and municipal properties? Those sidewalks are often unusable in winter, but I suppose that's another story, because we can't fine the state or municipalities for their negligence. There's always a double standard when it comes to government responsibility. "Just pay your taxes, obey us, and shut up, or we'll make life even more difficult for you."
