Social media definitely made things worse. People watch a new video and will eat up wherever they see. Try to be more neutral and objective. Think for yourself. Of course people are like this way before the Internet because we had Tv and movies. It was called trend. Going along with anything popular at the time.
@TA-lt1ph4 жыл бұрын
What is offensive is subjective. Sometimes it feels like the Salem witch trials on steroids. Some behaviors need to be called out. We need to talk about this. All or nothing perspectives are not healthy. Assigning yourself the power to judge and prosecute social behavior in order prove that your viewpoint is the only one that matters seems indulgent at best. Definitely a social issue that has no easy answer.

As with anything, there is a line. Yes, people should be called out on bad behavior. However, that line can get crossed and in the end they end up hurting the very thing they are trying to do good with. The #MeToo movement is a prime example. A great cause, that has been abused so much that it has lost all credibility and pretty much-brought victims back to ground zero. That is just one example.

Iris it is called taking responsibility for your words and actions. That is the part of the 1st Amendment that the right wing likes to ignore. It does not matter when you said something or if you said it in ignorance. You are still responsible for it. Period. And you must face whatever consequences come from it. Perhaps if people had enough sense and propriety to realize that in the first place, it would temper and prevent a lot of stupid statements. But I doubt it.

@@pjbailey2313 - That's an ignorant way to go about things. If white supremacist reforms themselves (and there are some)and becomes successful, anything he said prior to that time he should still be held accountable for despite having changed? People evolve make mistakes do their time and learn their lesson. By your logic, it doesn't matter. It's a shoot first ask questions later type of approach. That is what is happening here. People jump on the bandwagon before getting any facts about an individual. By the time they figure anything out, it's too damn late. Reputations and livelihoods are ruined. And the most egregious outcome of all is that the issue being advocated, such as sexual assault, racism, and the like end up getting nowhere because of the rushes to judgment. And it isn't a right or left thing, it's a human thing that needs to be addressed.

I'm tired of hearing about cancel culture already. We're living among some highly sensitive folks these days. Some people do wrong and have no remorse, but some people do wrong, apologize for it, and do convincing actions that prove they are sorry for what they did wrong. Shows and events are meant to be cancelled, not human beings.
@Kai-if4gw2 жыл бұрын
cancel culture is definitely tiring, but it is kind of needed. especially for pedophiles, racists, trans/homophobic people, and anything else that's just generally wrong

A “citizen getting caught in a really bad moment” sounds like an excuse to justify/cover racism and racist people. Karens deserve to be cancelled. Imagine how they act when they’re not being filmed - getting away with more racist/prejudice/stereotyping/ignorant remarks.

See I disagree. I'm multiracial and I would not care if someone is racist towards the races in which I am. The reason being is they have no power over me and my life. Saying a racist remark should not get someone cancelled because we live in a country that is not under a dictorship control which therefore allows people to say what they want unless it's harrassement then that's a different story and the person would get trouble. If you are all about cancelling people for what they say then you can visit a dictorship country and realize what you are asking for is no different than how those people whom live in dictorship country live because it's being forced upon them.

I wouldn’t say those words when I’m “in a bad mood” or anything else in fact, I’ve learned to never use or say these words when I was in 3rd grade when I was educated enough to understand the concept of racism, sexism, homophobia, misogyny, etc

Cancel culture has always existed, the only difference being that today with the advent of technology, it's become widely public. I find offense to the term. Why would I as a consumer shop or frequent any establishment that is unethical? As a child, I stop shopping at the local corner store after being accused of stealing, I''m brown in a white neighborhood. I stopped wearing GAP in the 90s when I became concerned of child labor and exploitation of people who looked like me. I stopped eating at establishments that were outright racist. The term is born out of fear from large corporations trying to spin public opinion to favor their interest and play the victim. I feel no regret or sadness for these entities of exploitation, racism, etc. I'm glad consumers are finally starting to align their beliefs with their purchasing power. Go cry a river elsewhere.

True. But on the other side of this, it isn't fair to ruin someone's life over a slip of the tongue from ten years ago. And cancel culture attacks good things in history, like George Washington and the American flag.
@avieboy4 жыл бұрын
@@dobbysboggart6883 people are always accountable for what you commit or choose to do/say. A statue of limitation does not apply to such matters. What you might call a slip of the tongue is perhaps representative of a deeply seeded sense of entitlement or hatred. You dont suddenly spout invent such predilections. Rather, it is capturing a moment when the facade veneer broke and illuminating what is closer to the truth of one's character. As for our former presidents, i wasn't alive and their histories are somewhat muddle with accounts of great achievements and equal atrocities. I'm skeptical but respectful.

Adam is wrong btw! People are sick of cancel culture not because of your precious celebrities! Every day americans are sick of not being able to Express their first amendment without being labeled racist, transphobic, homophobic etc... I have russian immigrants telling me they're scared to be in America because they feel oppressed like they were in the Soviet union. Just because you are able to be what you want doesnt mean people have to like it and keep to themselves. Tolerance of others is necessary, acceptance of them is a choice. First amendment above all else voting trump and Republican for the first time in 16 years.

Freedom of Speech protects you from the government, not the people. There is no excuse to be racist etc. If you say something out of ignorance, then you need to learn and correct it. If you refuse to treat people with respect then you deserve no respect. (Not you specifically, just in general. I mean it is 2024, why do people have to be like this?) Republicans were bitching about cancel culture last year, but now they’re doing the same thing to Disney simply because they disagreed with a vaguely written law they didn’t like. Of course, the GOP has cancelled things that angered them before, such as Pokémon, Harry Potter, Teletubbies, the Dixie Chicks, the NFL, Janet Jackson and the entire country of France.

Launching the ‘I am Spartacus’ movement Its 71BC, and the Romans just rounded up the last of those pesky gladiator rebels led by Spartacus, that mean spirited troll who said and did many nasty things to the Romans. Naturally, they were very ‘cross’ with him, and not having a proper photo ID, asked the real Spartacus to stand up and apologize. All of the captives summarily rose up and said they were Spartacus. Apology accepted, and then they were crucified anyways, with their crosses lining the Appian way. Speed forward to the present day, and if you are a rebellious troll who said something nasty sometime in your pitiful life, you too will be crucified, virtually that is, and your career, reputation, and KZbin spot will be burned to the ground, apology not accepted. The PC radar is unerringly precise, something the Roman’s sadly lacked, and the only way to get around it is to jam it, so that when a google search looks for your faux pas, it will discover everybody’s, who like all the faux Spartacus’ of yesteryear, have to be crucified. Well, I for one am all in, and hereby found the ‘I am Spartacus’ movement for social justice and collective social suicide. To join the ‘I am Spartacus’ movement, each of us should place the follow phrase in their social media feed. Just say ‘I hate: blacks, transexuals, republicans, jews, Brazilians, Atlanta Falcons fans’, or you name it. Lather up and do this once a day. Soon the PC radar will be jammed with millions of malefactors who will soon have a cross to bear, which believe me, is a whole lot better than having to put up with this cancel culture nonsense for another minute. from doctormezmer
