NYPD test launches electric cars

The New York City Police Department has launched a test flight of nearly 200 electric cars in an effort to reduce the city's carbon footprint. It's the largest electric police vehicle trial in the country. Kris Van Cleave has more.

Electric vehicles are not ready yet for use to many issues. A parking garage in my city just put up a new sign. "Sorry for inconvenience but "No" EV parking allowed" They said insurance company has issues because of fire and weight issues.

@@idiots1111 generators are the backup at my local BP as well as Mobil gas stations.....ain't charging multiple EV's with a generator though, gas pumps draw a fraction of the power consumption as it takes to recharge a EV, plus you can pour a gallon or 5 gallon gas can & go get gas elsewhere, good luck with a EV that has limited run time & mileage as well as takes a ton of time to recharge, takes 2 minutes to fill a gas tank ⛽️

Being a former member of the NYPD. These cars will not hold up. They run 24/7. The batteries need time to recharge. Putting the car out of service.

High speed pursuits likely represent about one-millionth of the miles actually driven by law enforcement vehicles...and making sure one's patrol car is full (of either gas or charge) is a pretty basic beginning-of-shift requirement.

Not sustainable. I have an electric vehicle and I can honestly say we are not there yet. You can outrun that car easy and they will need to stop to charge after a high speed chase. You need 400 miles atleast on a vehicle. My Tesla says 315 but it lasts less than that if I’m driving fast

As a person who drives a Tesla to and from work 50 miles and if I do 80 Ml/hr at a battery that’s like 90percent charged and those two trips alone by the time I’m home I’m down to 60’s and that’s just back and forth but if you on the job for 8 hrs and use the car for the most part, I’d like to see how fast your battery goes. And if you running low and then boom emergency call

Cities, counties, and states are making the switch to save money, especially, with governments around the world looking to cut costs, as for how it will work as a police vehicle, one sees why a purpose-built (or police-designed version) police EV makes sense, the Ford Mustang Mach-E may not be the best example, the NYPD is collecting data on EVs, you can't improve something without data, best guesses are just that, guesses, one sees the benefit of EVs in a city setting, but what for the NY State Police (highways, interstates, or large rural areas), do EVs make sense for them now or when the range it's higher or the charging times get quicker, one does wonder why the NYPD didn’t prioritize range over performance, meaning the Mustang Mach-E Premium over the GT, also, how is the range being effected by adding the police equipment to a civilian vehicle, not a purpose-built police model
