Same age here. I was unusually politically aware for a 10-year-old at the time and was really enthralled by this race. Stayed up late to watch results, which turned out turned out not to be so late after all. I’m from a Democratic family, but we voted Reagan as part of the so-called “Reagan Democrats.” (Similar to current Republicans for Kamala.) I went to a Carter stump speech in 1976, but after four years of stagflation and the Iran hostage crisis, a change had to be made. Carter was always a good man. He just had a lot of crap happen during his four years. People who believe the economy is bad now probably were not alive then. Oil and gas prices doubled and unemployment approached or exceeded double digits. You had to plan to get gas and wait in line on days where it was allowed. Add in Cold War concerns and 52 American hostages and it was really a difficult time to be an American. Reagan, at the most, helped make America feel great again. His 8 years had plenty of issues. Plenty of them, but winning the Cold War and improving American morale were his legacies. I was a Republican for nearly 20 years after I was old enough to vote. I do t regret it. But after going Independent in 2003, I will likely never vote GOP again. It’s not a political party anymore. It’s much much worse.

President Jimmy Carter was a class act. He lost badly but he took it by the chin and conceded with class. I think Jimmy Carter is one of the most underrated presidents in history. He’s only remembered for the hostel crisis when in reality he got them out despite Reagan taking the credit for it. Not to mention it was the Reagan and Bush that made a secret deal with the people that were holding the American citizens hostage to keep them until after the election just so Ronald Reagan could win so disgraceful. Really wish people would actually do research and understand that Jimmy Carter was NOT a bad president. He’s one of the most underrated and unappreciated presidents. And did everything he could to try and get those hostages out sooner. Jimmy Carter also didn’t lie to the American people. Jimmy Carter actually took the real principal of not telling a lie unlike George Washington. He always tried to be honest with them.

Agreed. But he should've waited until after the last polls closed to concede. Ryan White was 12 when he contracted AIDS and he died on April 8, 1990, one month before his high school graduation. Same here man, old days now. Reagan did well to keep things quiet about his "dealings" with Iran just before the election. It is a real shame that Reagan illegally made a deal with Iran to continue holding Americans hostage to derail Carter's chance to be reelected ( the end result was the "Iran - Contra affair" ).

So weird seeing the Republicans in blue and the Democrats in red. Can’t even imagine them going back to it that way in this day and age, though that is how they originally were colored for the political parties.

Will there be another Ronald Reagan in the Republican party? I doubt it.

My first election I was able to vote in, i voted proudly for President Reagan. I grew up in the south, long line of Democrats, this year was the first year my parents, and three of living grandparents voted Republican. To be fair, in 1980, there wasn't as deep a gap between the two parties as there is now. As an observation, this year was the beginning of when many on both sides switched parties.

They're going crazy and cheering for him even though he lost and is conceding ("We love Jimmy!") - was there really a time when politics wasn't so cynical?

That was the 2020 election. Economic mobility roared during the 1980s thanks to Reagan’s policies.
