The younger generations don't realize how bad things got after 9/11 - obviously that event wasn't the single cause but it feels like it marked a very definitive line for which I remember life being much better before and things turned very dark in the years after, never to return again. I genuinely believe we were happier, healthier and were more prosperous before cell phones, instant communication at all times, the massive amount of regulations and monitoring and inflation -at the end of the 90's it was easy to get a $6 - $7 an hour job at Burger King or something and you could still afford to fill your gas tank half full with a $5 bill and you could get a week's worth of food at the grocery store for $15....essentially $20 a week was the only thing really REQUIRED to make it to work and back and get through the day. Today, many people are working for $9 an hour but a tank of gas is $50 and you MIGHT be able to eat for 2 days on $10 worth of groceries and then you've got the stress of being plugged in and essentially "on" all the time with cell phones and social media. .....I think back to the 90s and the thing I absolutely miss the most was the ability to get in your car and just disappear for an afternoon and NOBODY would be upset at you.....there weren't any cell phones - at least not for normal people - so it's not like you were expected to constantly be looking at it. If you stopped in the park and just sat for 2 hours it would be no big deal. It's gotten so bad......sometimes I feel like a frog being boiled alive in 21st century western culture.

@@davidkeetz I have made a similar point so I know exactly how you feel. It feels like there was a fleeting moment, where we were just in a solid spot. Not everyone of course. But from the mid 90s until those planes hit those towers, there was a real sense of country, unity. We had a budget surplus by the end of Clinton’s years. We had dealt with some bs over in Kosovo, and we were in a good spot. The nation was not perfect, but we were close. I would love for our young people to be able to experience the 1990s. I'm a centrist, registered GOP but always consider myself a Blue Dog Democrat at heart. A shame they rarely exist anymore. My own beloved grandmother was a delegate for JFK in 1960. I was 7 at the time. My parents each supported a different candidate- my mother Clinton and my father Bush. It was the first election I was cognizant of in my life and as a young boy I took an immediate interest into politics. My grandmother had bought for me a children's book, "The Buck Stops Here," which was an illustrated history of the various presidents which I read frequently. I'll always remember my parents sitting me down and explaining to me that while we may have political differences, we will always still love each other and that we as Americans settle our differences at the ballot box. My parents are still together and will be celebrating 50 years of marriage next year. Clinton I'll say is the last truly great president we had despite his impeachment and the mess that followed that. This is the America I miss. Where we have an election and the next day we wake up and carry on. We believe and support and trust in our leader. Political polarization is the absolute worst thing I've seen in my lifetime. At 39 I fear it will only get worse.
