If you're dating online, chat for a day or two max but then meet in a public place for a full meal and a social activity (such as a museum or just a coffee and a conversation) *within* the same week. If they can't meet you within 2 weeks, stop all contact with them until they can meet you in person. You want to keep your emotional distance. If they cancel last minute or delay, block them. If they ask for money, report them. Do not pay for your date and don't let your date pay for you. If you like them, meet again. Look for signs that they are trying to hide their identity. It's ok to trust people, but verify what they say.

I think a PhD holder is easier to scam than a working-class person who only has a high school diploma. The latter needs more street smarts to survive. The victim shaming in these comments are just awful and cruel… If you actually listen to what is being said instead of just judging blindly, you’d realize that she isn’t handing over her bank account and ssn to the guy. These scammers are a part of a large 24/7 operation (many times themselves being victims of the organized crime leaders) that enable them to play the long game on many victims simultaneously. They don’t do the old “can you wire me some money to help me out?” anymore; instead, they gain trust and then manipulate ways to get people to enroll in what they think is an actual crypto or non-crypto investment platform that looks and feels like the real thing. They then make it seem real with simulated gains and losses until they pull the plug… anyone could fall victim to this - please stop the blind judgement and cruelty… what exactly are you gaining from the cruelty? You’re just helping the wrong side by doing that…

I don't know if the FBI takes it seriously, but I 'felt' for one recently. He was smart: no love bombing, no asking for money (I realised it was a scam before he did ask), his pictures were stolen but from someone he had scammed before so they were private and not appearing on the internet with a basic reverse search... So I reported him to the FBI, with the phone number, pictures used, his location (that I managed to track down...) and nothing, I heard nothing from them! I also tracked down the person whose pictures were used, because I suspected he was being scammed by the same group and wanted to warn him...

After the fact, good luck. I filed an IRS "Compliance" file on my own little brother, he having taken advantage of two parents sliding into dementia, or what ever other issues they had. The IRS file was complete: dad kept immaculate records, two million in "kash" missing, but the paperwork was all there. the IRS was sympathetic, but stated if hyou don't hear from us in two years, you won't. A decade ago. Now add to that some perp. in Poland or Nigeria or some eastern bloc crap hole. ain't gonna happen. my sympathies.

OMG, NEVER EVER take money out of your 401 or any savings you have. Once the conversations go to money, they are not the love of your life, they are your scammer. You are not different, you are not the love of their life. You are their mark for another stupid person.

This is horrendous that this continues to happen! If you can’t FaceTime within a week of meeting this person red flag 🚩 If they are boasting about how much money they have, but are requesting you send them money red flag 🚩 They always have an excuse for not meeting and communicating from strange numbers, especially via WhatsApp and random messaging apps red flag 🚩 If they are telling you they are in love with you within a week🚩 Continue to share this information with the elderly and the lonely !!!

Scammers have become better than before.Sometimes they are real people and they are seen…some even meet the victim in person. Then they find a reason to tell the individual they need to leave the country for a while and then scam start.

Greed/financial gain seems to be a part of the "romance" in most cases. The "victims" very often believe they are going to get free money in these cases. In more than half of the cases, the "victims" like to claim that the romance bit is what motivated them, while it seems to me, that the "victim's" own greed is very often the biggest problem.

Ladies, if they won't meet in person within a maximum of 2-weeks then block and delete!! Do not ever tell them about the time limit. Accept NO excuses whatsoever!! No matter what they say or do, if they don't meet within your secret time limit then block and delete with NO explanation or further communication. (It's just like walking into a casino or taking any dangerous chemical substances, etc. You need to set limits in ADVANCE. And keep the time limit secret, I strongly recommend no more than 2 weeks.)

Also, if someone you met online cancels or is a no-show to a first meet/date please block and delete with no explanation or further communication! It is a huge red flag and ALWAYS unacceptable. (And, you are still on the time limit with this person. Do not start the clock over again. They ran out of time to prove they are real with an in-person meet. Block and delete, no explanation.) No excuses ever!

It's so obvious who they are and places like facebook really does nothing to stop them. I report them all of the time because they're easy to spot and FB just doesn't seem to care. Do a reverse image search and then go meet someone at a grocery store.

If a new Facebook Friend asks you to switch your correspondence over to Google Chat or WhatsApp, don't do it! He will then block his Facebook account from you and ask you for money on Google Chat etc. You won't be able to report his Facebook account. This has happened to me.

I think the scam the shocked me the most is one that happened in Australia where they are able to continue off of a text message you have. The last showed her texts on the news and if she didn't say it before, I wouldn't know which was from the bank and which was the scammer. I do think banks need stricter policy when odd transfers comes up and what to do when we are scammed.

Romance scammers can also do it in person. If you are asked to assist financially or invest money by someone you barely know then you must think twice. Love should never be about money.
