God, I love Philip Roth so much. I can't, still can't believe they didn't give him a Nobel...

I think it's important to note that the Nobel Prize for Literature isn't simply given to the best writer. There's a famous clause; it's given to an author who has "produced the most outstanding work in an idealistic direction." I think this is probably the reason he was never given the prize.

From Goodbye Columbus to Sabbath’s Theater he bared his soul. He showed you the window to your soul. I’m incredibly thankful Professor Roth. Thank you.

A man unto himself, with no opinions of others. How beautiful it must be to live life wealthy and unencumbered. Still, his writing was terrific, a great author. I shall miss him.

I was really fascinated by his response to the question about God: "I'm afraid there isn't, no." That can be understood in several ways. I wonder which one he meant (or if he might have meant them all). I can think of at least two people I know who are sure there is no God but really wish there were. It's a very difficult and stoic position to take.

I love his answer about God, no I don't believe in God, show me the evidence crap - just "so you are saying there is no god?", "I'm afraid so, no". A man with nothing to lose will tell you the truth.

The first book I read of his was Portnoy's Complaint and that was back in 1972, have read a few more since and thankfully still have more to discover. I don't know who this Rita Braver is but how insulting of Sunday Morning to send a gossip columnist only interested in fishing out titbits to interview Philip Roth. His annoyance was visible.

Linda, Rita Braver is not a gossip columnist. She's a journalist who covers national issues, culture, art, science and foreign policy.
