Rather than an auction, I would have wished that this collection be donated to a museum so that the public could see these artifacts of history. Fingers crossed that the future owners will loan out some of these pieces in the future 🤞

Exactly! These items should have been donated to the the Library of Congress or National Archives and not auctioned off to be part of another person’s private collection. Whenever there is a “private” anything it typically implies exclusion.

The trouble with that thought is, most museums are full to overflowing with items. Most of the collections are in storage and only get seen for limited exposure of special shows. And much of it is never seen again.

Yes, it does belong in a museum or the Library of Congress, because the pieces will be guaranteed to be taken care of for prosperity.

It's a shame the whole collection wasn't DONATED to a museum.

Sad that these items will remain in private collections. Many of these belong in museums.

Most people aren't has interested in Amarican history out side of the US as Americans are, plus Americans have deep pockets and will be willing to pay more for them.

All sale funds should be donated to reparations for the black and indigenous communities that were stolen, enslaved, displaced and murdered as a result of this "declaration". The descendants are still here and affected by systemic disenfranchisement, imprisonment, poverty and worse. You ask them to pull themselves up by their bootstraps when you have taken away their shoes for hundreds of years. Do the right thing.

I just read that they are going to auction off the smaller of only 2 copies of the painting, “ Washington Crossing the Delaware”. It has hung in the White House for a number of years. I don’t know why they would sell something like that. If it belongs to the government, it belongs to the people. If they don’t have a spot for it at the White House, at the moment, put it in storage or offer it on loan to the Smithsonian or another museum. I know I don’t have all the details yet but I am very upset. I can’t imagine why the government ( if it’s them ) would sell this piece of Americana.

The 'government' doesn't own the painting. It was on loan to the White House from a private collector.

@@toddlevin I said in my comment that I did not have all the information about the sale. Thank you for the clarification. In the past there were times when White House pieces were sold or given away. I thought that practice had ended and they were now trying to find and repurchase items as they come up for sale. I was just wondering if I was mistaken. I hope we can buy it. I know the State Department has a wonderful collection of American art and antiques that they show case in the reception rooms on the top floor. I would hate it if such an iconic painting was sold out of the country.

It's surprising they aren't wearing gloves as they casually touch these old paper items. Oils from their hands are damaging....THEY SHOULD KNOW BETTER!

No no no. All serious manuscript collectors (including the Library Of Congress) state that wearing gloves while handling antiquarian books and manuscripts may do more harm than good. Correct practice is actually to handle rare and valuable books with clean dry hands. Using gloves is a pervasive myth that may result in tearing of delicate manuscript pages, and gloves many times carry and transmit dirt and other chemical substances much more readily than clean flesh. Please don't offer uninformed opinions.
@henrylivingstone2971
@henrylivingstone2971 2 жыл бұрын
That’s not field standard anymore, when handling antiquarian booksellers it’s better not to use gloves because it renders your senses dull and you’re less aware of touch.
