Hi, many thanks for your kind comments. I must admit I have not seen many CCTV systems on home railways but I was involved with on an exhibition layout and cameras are often part of the setup at exhibitions. I had the hidden space for my fiddle yard and I thought it would be more fun to operate it completely hidden from view - good luck with your railway plans - add a cctv system its fun - and not too expensive!! ... Taking a small amount of time to like or comment on a video is a small action considering how long it takes to make a video so thanks for producing content! Really enjoyable video showing your plans for this year. I really like your setup around the hobby work space and the position for lighting. It’s a great setup. A great tour of your space surrounding your layout. The camera setup for the fiddleyard is most inspiring. Thanks for filming and sharing. Clint

Hi Michael - I am sure I replied but I am happy to say again. The cameras are unbranded models from china at about £7GBP a time. If you do an ebay search with 'mini CCTV cameras' or 'mini spy cameras' some should show up. They are silver with Red, Yellow and White sockets comming from them on leads. They run on 9v DC although they are often marked for 12v DC. They have 6 infra-red lights (which I dont Use) and a manually focussing lens. They come mounted on a small bracket. Good luck with the search ... David

Hi Simon - you are correct these were all sourced using ebay. The exceptions were the 6 position switch unit and the AV camera to VGA converter they were both kindly donated by John Tothill at Canal Sidings (KZbin Channel). You may try these searches that will bring up a selection to choose from - please note - I am no expert - if you are uncertain then please check this out with someone who has sound electrical knowledge before you proceed. mini cctv camera (£6-£8 each) (each camera will need power - I used a 9v 1A (£5-£10) AC/DC supply split 5 ways) 6 position rotary switch (under £5) (Could not find a switch selector like mine as mine was gifted) AC Composite to VGA converter (£12) - here is a direct product link - enter in ebay search - 182136525263 The above comes with a 5V 1A power supply. Connecting leads for each camera and between switch and signal converter - AV yellow plugs/sockets. price will depend on quantity and length. If you are not using your monitor for anything else then you can connect to it directly from the VGA converter output. If you are, then you may opt for a VGA splitter. You will need one with at least 2 VGA inputs although you will only need 1 VGA output.

Sounds like a very sensible system for the Dinky restos, should streamline the process quite a bit, as long as you don't mix up all the bits.👍 Thinking about the CCTV set up, would you not have been as cheap getting a seperate monitor for the cameras and keeping them completely separate from the computer? That way, you could mount the monitor anywhere convenient and there would be no need for the splitter. Not a criticism, just a thought.😊 Little mention of the watercolours, are we going to see a partner for the kingfisher this year? Cheers for now, Dougie.
@davidhyde4329
@davidhyde4329 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Dougie. I have a stack of plastic takeaway boxes with lids. I Research and print a little history for each vehicle to use in the video and put in a box with all the stripped down parts - this should keep them from getting mixed up. About the computer/monitor. If I was still fully using Railmaster (control by computer) then I would need a monitor dedicated to the running so I would indeed need a 2nd monitor. Now I am using the perfectly capable Hornby Select Controller for running and don't really need the computer any more - except, I do use Railmaster for altering DCC addresses and CVs because I can display the addresses on my monitor. But when I am operating the railway I don't need a monitor so I can switch it over to the CCTV function. I think I paid less than a tenner for the splitter, so, for me, I am happier just having the one monitor on my wall. I paint and demonstrate watercolours for a living (although I am now (semi) retired). So I prefer to keep my hobbies separate. The kingfisher was a one off really, as I painted it initially for my local classes. I don't plan to do any more in the near future but I never say never - so who knows. Thanks again Dougie, I wish I had time to do everything. Best regards ... David
@2H80vids
@2H80vids 4 жыл бұрын
@@davidhyde4329 Ah, I thought the splitter would have cost more. That kinda makes sense, especially if the computer isn't running the system for you and you can leave the cameras on the monitor. Sorry to hear the kingfisher was a one-off. I really enjoyed that wee series. I haven't put brush to paper since my schooldays but I enjoy watching watercolours taking shape. I stumbled across Hannah Gordon's "Watercolour Challenge" *many* years ago and got hooked.😁 I've never seen a live kingfisher(I'd love to) so your painting was as close as I've come.👍 Cheers for now, Dougie.

Hello David. Oddly enough Itoo have just finished a new workbench...it's already cluttered!! I sat glued to the camera sequence though. On my retired exhibition layout Armathwaite I have a fully detailed front, but the rear half is just a track fest of 40 plus storage sidings. I had intended to put a helix and board over the storage yard but it just gave too much for one man to operate. The use of a camera system like the one you describe allows me to build a 2ft x 15ft scenic cover over the fiddle yard allowing at least a few months interesting scenic building and no need for more track. One question though David, do you know how long the range is for each camera, thus allowing me to work out how many cameras I would need to cover a 15ft length. Superb video David...thank you. Best regards, Bob
@davidhyde4329
@davidhyde4329 4 жыл бұрын
Hello again Bob thanks for your comments. Yes its the "get a bigger bin for your rubbish only to end up with a bigger bin of rubbish" idea 😁😁. Nonetheless I am enjoying the extra workspace. Glad to have 'inspired' you to install a system - it does allow for another level of fun when operating. I dont know how long the range is. I would imagine though that there is no restriction as it is possible to manually focus the lens (I assume to infinity). Of course you would have to light it independently - I think the buit-in infrared LEDS would be the limiting factor otherwise. My cameras are placed about 2 feet apart and are roughly grouped in pairs facing each other so I can monitor travel in each direction. I have 2 'cupboards' so have a pair for each. You would probably have to factor in extra cameras to watch any close-up sections for uncoupling etc. which is why I am adding another camera. John Tothill has a bigger fiddle yard than mine and uses 6 of these cameras. Worth checking out John's channel "Canal Sidings". He is a thoroughly nice chap and helped me a lot with my system. Good luck with it Bob, Best Regards ... David

Hi Robin, Yes you can use a RPi and do all this wirelessly but be aware that all that digital video processing via WiFi and the RPi comes at a price. It will not be REAL TIME. Digital processing always results in delays which mount up very quickly meaning that precise positioning of trains will be a real challenge if not completely impossible. I use a RPi with wired camera to allow me to see my 3D printer via WiFi while it is printing and I get about 1.5 seconds delay from actual print process to monitor picture via my wired giga bit home network. I only say all this to warn you of possible dissapointment ...........................John

Hi Robin. Thanks for those kind comments - copy away - delighted to be of help. I am aware of raspberry pi computers. I would love to have the know-how to use them, but I am afraid they are a little over-my-head. Fair play to you, your planned system sounds great. I mentioned that these cameras focus - I should probably have said these cameras can be manually focussed they are not auto-focus. But at least you can focus them for close-up or distant placement. Wireless connectivity sounds a great idea - in all a much more hi-tech system than mine and it probably has much more potential for development. Very good luck with it ... David

The quality of cheap Chinese video cameras these days gives such good definition that video surveillance of a model railway is a practical proposition! Peco PL-15 could be used to change the view point without having to do it manually. I think you could use a Google Chrome extension to show the picture in your web browser. eg: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hprKfYRjlL6FZ7s
@davidhyde4329

Hi many thanks for the comment - I am happy with these cameras - not perfect images but plenty good enough for the task in hand. I am no great expert on things electric. The PL-15 changes polarity when you switch a point. I can't see how this would work in my system - but, as I say, I am no expert. I don't change the viewpoint of each camera - they are set in one position. Changing viewpoint means changing ot another camera. I would have to set a PL-15 so I can't see where the advantage would be. Thanks for the link - I see what you are getting at here. I assume you mean I can display the computer controls of Railmaster on the screen and watch the CCTV as a picture-in-picture on the same screen. But I don't computer-control my layout with Railmaster (I only use Railmaster for changing CVs and DCC addresses). I control my layout with the Hornby 'Select' controller, so I can use the entire screen for my CCTV. The definition on these small cameras is, as I mentioned, not perfect - so the bigger the image the better I can see. If I have the wrong-end-of-the-stick here please come back. I like to incorporate automation where I can, but, when it comes to the electrics I can be a bit dim👍👍 ... David

@@davidhyde4329 Hi David. PL-15 can be used to switch any circuit, turning the camera on. You could make it so that when you switched the point or changed a signal, the screen would display the train in the siding. Good idea? Things to research: Bachmann 36-561 (not suitable for Peco point motors, but currently £24.50 in Hatton's bargain bin) can return which way a point is switched as a CV value in when connected to a PL-15. Tip: do not connect Peco point motors to 36-561 (aka ESU SwitchPilot) because Peco Point motors do not have a built-in switch to break the circuit when once the point is switched. Research: Railmaster can be used to change the points using R8247, which is suitable for use with Peco point motors. The cunning part is that 36-561 works with PL-15, but R8247 does not have this facility. A drawback with Railmaster is the state of a point cannot be determined. You could use Railmaster to turn the cameras on and off using PL-15 attached to a point motor activated by R8247. Have fun.
