You must be very careful to check before turning the pot that it hasn't got a spot of weak glue (like a nail polish) sometimes red in colour which is used to hold the the pot you turn in place. If you don't remove that glue/nail polish whatever it is the the whole pot will turn ripping itself off the circuit board damaging it completely. A dab of isopropyl alcohol on the pot for 10 seconds before you turn it will suffice.

70 year old woman here. Our 30 year old 3 disk CD player was not reading in any of the positions. I bought a cleaner disk that would not even read. I was thinking of buying a new one. I decided a drastic fix wouldn't hurt anything. I doused an unwanted CD in alcohol and put it in and tried to play it. It didn't work. I then poured about a teaspoon of alcohol on the middle of where CD #2 sits. I closed it and pressed the play button. It played funny for a few seconds and then it worked just fine. I played it about 30 minutes and it was still working and the alcohol had evaporated. I'm not suggesting this method, but I didn't need to unscrew anything. Now I don't need to buy a new CD player in 2020 when they are on their way out anyway.

yea, a microfiber cloth damped in alcohol is what fixes 70% of my lasers too the other 30% do require this nuclear method of boosting the laser power I'm sure you'd be more than capable of doing that as well with a bit of patience :D

@@Darieee I do fix things around the house. Our toaster over door wouldn't stay closed till I fixed it. Just in the last couple of weeks I spent hours updating a Windows 7 and an 8 to 10s (waited too long because I didn't like W10). But I really was ready to get a new CD player and had lost patience. I take of lot of risks when I fix things because I don't know what I'm doing, but it usually turns out all right. I should mostly make sure I unplug electrical things before working on them. In my younger days I would have disassembled the CD player, and tried what you did, though.

Fixed a Panasonic RX-DS750 boom box that was built in 1996. Laser adjustment can be accessed without taking unit apart. Insert CD, select something around track 6-10. Stop it and remove CD. Head will be aligned where you can get a small screwdriver in the gap on the left side of head. Mine just took about a 10 degree counter-clockwise adjustment of the screw. Thanks for the video!
@hestheMaster

As a laser diode ages it loses it's conductivity like a dimming bulb. To compensate the current going to it can be increased by this small pot to allow the laser to become brighter and read the disk correctly! Just don't turn it all the way up or the current will shorten it's lifespan very quickly. GOOD FIX!

Darieee, you are an awesome electronist, I'll give you that. But regarding the 650 MB /74 min CD info... I must tell you I have just bought around 85 pieces of those (from multiple sources), just to realize that a modern 80 min Maxell CD Audio XL II 80 (high reflectance) will do the job. :)) Meaning the info you provided was "asa am crezut eu"-type and actually it was about the CD-R reflectance, which was higher on older CD. But so it is on modern audio ones. Anyway, thanks a lot for this laser power tip! It's very good to know info although my 1998 Alpine Audio 10 worked without it. P.S. For burning I use an external Plextor BD-R which is capable of 4X, but 10x works just fine.

@@amajorseven It is recommended to use a microfiber towel wrapped around a screwdriver tip. Maybe at least a blast of air from a duster can. I'd bet film/dust is not the issue. On two of our cars (older, 2001 and 2003), the disc is taken inside, then makes 3-4 clicks and then comes out. Occasionally it starts playing, like catching smth inside of the radio CD player, but in most cases, the disc just slips and comes out. What that can be and how to repair this problem? Thank you for the great film.

the mechanism's plastic bits sometimes break .. some springs sometimes ping off you'll need to open the radio and get to the cd-player module inside also - it has a rubber roller which catches dust and loses its grip - some window cleaner on a rag takes care of that with spectacular results

@@Darieee Thank you for the replay. I tried to clean today w/ a disc made fm/thin cardboard 2001 Saturn SL2: moist it a bit w/91% Isopropyl Alcohol and inserted in CD player opening, then removed it slightly wiggling around. I don't remember if I pressed the Eject button, probably not. The cardboard was removed, but the slot got stuck in the way that I can't install CD anymore. More of that I tried to push those parts inside w/CD and all the doors started to lock in and out like crazy. Eventually I closed all the doors, but CD player is broken completely. All that has very good outcome though, since that car started to have a problem recently w/doors, they would got open, all of them from time to time, and we couldn't figure out what causes it. Now I know, that the malfunctioning radio unit causes it, bcs the disk was sitting inside. I'm planning to order new radios for both cars. Thank you again.

Yeah good point - that part of your problem is most likely cause by other shit -- maybe try cleaning the contacts inside the port? Check if the plastic piece is not broken in any way and that the pins are not bent out of alignment ?

Definitely going to try this on my Denon DN-S5000 CD Turntable, as it just does Not want to read CDs and I've tried cleaning the CD and then cleaning the player itself and I had always wondered why it "Looked" like it was struggling via the screen showing all pertinent information was bright, but then a little less bright and then even less bright...... and then trying again..... really Bright, then less and less. Finally, saying "Disk Error"...... I will let you know how it goes and I will only turn it in small amounts as to Not burn something out or beyond repairable. Nice 1. Appreciate the video, as there are not to many on this type of problem for CD Turntables. Beauty. ty. L8er vader.

@@Darieee ...... Problem!!! I can't seem to find "ANY" bolt, nut, screw to turn and dial up the laser power output. No reference point, as this CD drive is "VERY" different from other drives...... I think,,, I believe. lol. I am trying to look it up now. Either way, I Will let you know the outcome... and again, thank you for your video and input. Always nice to have more Input and Info when working on a project where my knowledge is sub-par. L8.

Good post. Have done this as short term fix, might get a few months out of them if you're lucky, never had any long term success in years by doing this because the diodes are breaking down, it speeds up their demise by increasing the current. CD lasers are all pre-set when new and they should never be adjusted from new if they do not work. I have had defective ones which iv'e had to send back. Buying and fitting a new one from a decent supplier is much better depending on your on budget, they vary from £10 to £500 or more.

hmmm .. well, to be honest I never had the chance to test them out long term .. have you had them die out 'again' ? what kind of run-time did you get ?

@@Darieee Got a few months, but not years. In the end they fail to read the TOC because they can't focus, you can hear the laser knocking the disk sometimes. I think other people might be lucky and get more time out of them.
