Enjoyed the video, and glad you enjoy your budget purchase! The phenomenon of different-sounding remasters is not new. I remember my dad coming home one day in the 80s with PM’s All The Best! hits compilation and being shocked at how different the songs taken from Band on the Run sounded from his original pressing 70s cut of that album, and not necessarily in a good way. I guess we were well into the digital mastering era by then… Regarding digitisation of old vinyl, I’m convinced that a song being in digital format is neither here nor there - it‘s all down to your sound source. When I’ve recorded LPs into my computer with a good quality sound card and turntable, they sound indistinguishable from the original on playback.

I have found, and it's a general rule and not absolute, if it was cut for vinyl, it will sound better on vinyl. It is just warmer, and cd's on old material sound a little flat. that's just me, and I've been around a while.

Great comparison on a terrific album. This is definitely a top 5 McCartney album for me. I have both a 70s pressing as well as the 2014 vinyl reissue along with the DCC gold CD version from the 1990s and the 2014 CD. I think I do prefer the original pressing but I do love the DCC CD as well., BTW can get a Near Mint copy of Venus and Mars from the 1970s for around $30 on discogs which is what I paid earlier this year. Thanks for sharing!

The Album had stickers and a poster. I miss my original copy. I put the stickers on my drum set. I really love this record.

Great comparison video. Ive done a lot of comparisons myself to album vs cd's, or original pressings vs newer pressings.) In most cases I choose my original pressing. Now, when it comes to McCartney, the one that I did choose the digital version over vinyl was Wings Over America. I have two pressings of this album and both sound, well, muddled, for a lack of a better word. Someday maybe they will re-engineer and remaster that one and release it on vinyl. Thanks for posting.

"Venus And Mars" has always sounded a little "off". The mix was supposedly heavily compressed for its original release. My speculation is, it was done so to make the louder songs sound even louder and tougher. Mastering engineer Steve Hoffman wanted to use the pre-mastered session tapes to make a new mastering, but was denied. I guess Paul wants the album to sound that way. And I respect his artistic integrity.

I agree, I don’t think this was recorded well. For example, when Rock Show kicks in, it always sounds a bit dead. It’s a song that should have more life to it. The bonus content on that McCartney archive release is great though

The 2014 MPL remastered vinyl from Germany is wonderful! I like it better than the 2011 deluxe CD release.

I downloaded a V&M set that had 'Letting Go' placed after 'Rock Show', which works rather well, and wondered if there was an official release with that sequence. The surround remix is terrific!

T! It would be interesting to hear your story how the Beatles entered your life. How, where, was it a particular song? Was Grogu with you?
@TJRtheOriginal2 жыл бұрын
LOL....sadly Grogu wasn't with me yet. I have actually talked about this in a previous videos. My first exposure to The Beatles was the Movie Yellow Submarine! I will never forget the first time I heard "Eleanor Rigby" .

Excellent comparison. Another comparison would be to the one I originally bought, the early 1980's version on Columbia (and no poster was included with it either). When Paul signed to Columbia in the US in 1979, since he owns his masters, a few of his LP's were re released on his new label. I have V&M and Band and I know WOA and I believe Speed of Sound was (though I've never seen them). They were recuts since their new CBS catalog numbers are stamped in the dead wax and there are none of the old one's scratched out like some reissues I own.

I always try to find the first CD-release since they are far less processed and sound more like the Lps. The loudnesss war hadn't started so the dynamic range is almost always bigger and he sound is more open and warm. Venus and Mars is no exception. There is a lot to be said for AAD.

Love the CD only because I can listen in my car. Love Venus and mars as much as band on the run

The Beatles mono cd box set sounds closer to a Vinyl listening experience than the stereo counterpart. That's because there is no too much EQ

After a half of lifetime with the American version of the help album and getting up to lift the needle I love the convenience of cds. Do miss the reading ease of Los but I don't buy new music anymore so reading the album as I listen to a new album isn't something I'd Do now anyway

i think a more interesting comparison would be “Venus & Mars” vs the 1976 live album “Wings Over America” because to me, when it comes to the V&M album…a lot of the songs seems “plastic”to me as for sound. for example the opening medley “Venus & Mars/Rockshow” sounds more full and energetic and…just “rocks out!” on “Wings Over America” than the studio version (Same with “Jet” from BOTR) a lot of the songs from the live album just…. sound a lot better: Venus & Mars/ Rockshow Jet Lady Madonna (im gonna catch a lot of hate on here for this!😄) Live & Let Die Magneto & Titanium Man Beware My Love Letting Go Hi, Hi, Hi the others sound just as good live as the studio with “You Gave Me The Answer”, “Let’ ‘Em In” and “Band On The Run” being the exception (studio versions are better) I still love “V&M” as an album as a whole, i could easily take the studio versions of “Call Me Back Again” and “Listen To What The Man Said” anyday (BOTH versions are equally great in thier own way same with “Maybe I’m Amazed”) but …. after that i just want to hear my favorite 70s live album! “Wings Over America” or at least watch the concert! V&M to me is just the basic warmup for the main live show… i guess you could say. but i don’t really know how you feel about live albums in general….

I've had the similar experience with Neil Young..." After the Gold Rush " . I enjoy the pops and clicks , Neil Young with out them is like missing an old friend. The CD is sterile

Just pretend there is a warm crackling fire burning in ye rustic hearth when you play old vinyl.. 'Letting Go' still rocks, 'Spirits of Ancient Egypt' still gives me the willies.

Here's the deal on Venus & Mars. I'm old enough to have purchased at release. V&M has always been a very muddy sounding recording. I remember that as a take away from hearing it when new, and at that time i didn't have the discriminating ear that i posses today. Out of extreme curiosity I performed the same com parison. As always these things are very subjective, but i came away basically thinking that neither format had great dynamics, but that the Cd at least improved things by 10-15%. Don't get me wrong it's still a great album, but for some reason wa always a very flat sounding recording.

Listen to What the Man Said was released in May 1975, so if you were listening to the Top 100 songs for the year, that would have been the end of 1975, so mid seventies, not early seventies. I figured you might have heard Band on the Run when you said early 70s....
@TJRtheOriginal2 жыл бұрын
You are correct. It was the mid 70’s and not the early 70’s.

The Archive Series is not perfect, unfortunately. Try to compare the original 1989 Flowers In The Dirt LP with the 2017 2LP re-release: you're gonna be shoked in a bad way.

To my ears the cd is a slight improvement over the vinyl. In an ironic twist the absolute best sounding McCartney I've ever heard is in the form of Russian bootleg cds.
