I agree about PA's prisms. I will always say until unseated - the PA Micro 1x is the most underrated optic I have or had. The eye relief is huge, its clear, can be magnified, and gets daylight bright. Although not as usable as a red dot - it is closest thing by far that isnt a red dot. If you have an astigmatism its an absolute no brainer
@seanoneil277

It's an incredible value. I've used it on an AR, and on a PCC for Steel Challenge. Haven't tried to put a magnifier behind it but it's so crisp and clear compared to a dot. The only thing that comes close IMO is the Holosun HS 403G ACSS, which is amazing with a 3x behind it, but not as good as the PA SLX 1x when run at 1x. This SLX 3x seems like it will be an improved version of the Holosun ACSS + 3x magnifier setup. I'd put a RDS on the prism and have a very lightweight, capable setup.

15 years shooting, tends of thousands of rounds down range and more than a few thousand dollars worth of training classes, here's the 1 paragraph scoop If you can get a BDC on your optic, then get one. This goes for any optic. Red dots are great for CQB inside of 100 yards and nothing else. Target identification is a thing. Holographic sights are good at one thing and one thing only. Night vision use. They suffer in all other departments, and some red dots are quickly catching up to their night vision ability. Flip to the side magnifiers only make sense when 75% or more of your shooting is expected to be within 100 yards. High quality prism optics are 90% as good as a red dot, but they can be even better than a red dot when they have a wide FOV and 2 or 3x magnification. An ACSS with 2x will beat a red dot because it's both fast AND can be taken out to range. A red dot can do that technically, but you won't be able to identify your target at that range so it's not very safe to do it, and it will always be more difficult to do than with a mangified prism with a BDC. Overall, most people should be picking these as their go to optics, they're useful in the most if not all common situations unlike most other optics that stutter or fail in one situation or another. LVPOs will slow you down to the point of being dangerous up close, but are ideal for mid or long range. A lot of people should consider running one, but they get heavy quick. Run an LVPO when it doesn't make sense to run a prism anymore (need more magnification, ranges are always longer etc.)

I was originally concerned with the speed I could use it for close up and once I figured it out I’m just as fast with this as I am with my Eotch and Aimpoints. Plus the fact that I have astigmatism, this optic is a godsend lol. I don’t always have my glasses on hand as I usually leave them in my range bag or car for driving at night. Hey, just wanted to let you know that when you were sighted in on one of the center targets at 100yrds, that was an excellent visual comparison of FOV, because the viewer can pause the video and count the number of target stands. I assume that the spacing and width of the target stands is constant enough over time to make FOV comparisons. Since you're there filming anyway, it would be really cool if you get a pic or vid of each optic sighted in on a center target so we can count target stands to the left and right in the FOV. Anyway, keep up the good work Sir, you're definitely my go-to for all things optics

I run the 5x on one of my setups with an offset red dot. I use the PA offset mount- not the piggyback. I really like shooting with that setup. Going 5-1,1-5 with a tilt is nice. One thing that I have heard/read that going from 1-5 is too much of shock when switching. Baloney. These same folks run and LPVO and throw it from 1-6 all the time.

The Gen II version of the GLX prism could be a real monster. If I were PA, I would design it to put even more direct pressure on Trijicon and the ACOG line than the current GLX 2x does. If they could improve the FOV on the Gen II and not ruin the excellent eye relief and general usability, they’d have a really compelling optic. It would probably have to get a little bigger, but it’d still be lighter than a 3x prism-plus red dot combo.
@CDOES

I completely agree. Is like to see more Philippino made scopes from them. And hopefully ones that will perform better then their current glx line up optically. Physically they are excellent. But the 3-18 left me wanting much much more.
@FMDad-dm5qo
@FMDad-dm5qo 7 ай бұрын
@@CDOES I would even accept Chinese made on the Gen II as long as they keep the same nice glass that’s on the current GLX 2x. My working theory- which is *speculative* but does seem to fit with the observational data in your videos - is that the 2x is a “GLX” because PA had it spec’ed out with the highest tier of optical glass the Chinese OEM could provide, while the SLX microprisms are maybe one tier down? This would also explain why the Vortex Spitfire II looked better than the SLX 5x in your comparison - maybe Vortex went with the higher tier glass, while PA , at a similar price point, is choosing to offer a significantly more feature rich prism with better reticle, illumination, adjustments etc. (though the Vortex does beat it in red dot mounting options) Again, just spitballing. And even if they’re not literally the same OEMs I would think the trade offs would be essentially similar.
@hansblitz7770
@hansblitz7770 7 ай бұрын
Needs a bigger FOV, improved more bold chevron and BDC. Keep it under 14oz, and under $500. Don't care if it is still China, but the Phillipines would be better. If Japanese, under $700.
@FMDad-dm5qo
@FMDad-dm5qo 7 ай бұрын
@@hansblitz7770 agree with all of this. I’d also prefer a slightly thinner ‘horseshoe’ in the reticle. With the 2x’s strong illumination (which could also be bumped up by one more setting on the Gen II) it will still be plenty fast and prominent.

I watched a video in which a rifle had a red dot as the primary aiming point mounted on the top rail and a micro prism was mounted on a canted mount to the side. The reason was that in 2 gun matches the majority of shots are up close with only a few shots at distance. The advancement in technology with micro prism scopes allows for such a setup. It's completely different than we are used to, but it makes sense for an urban environment.

The main issue is that the 3x is going to be used for the longer shot. Shots where youll want to be extra stable, which is harder with the rifle canted. For 3 Gun where speed is everything it can make sense. However for real life/urban/shtf etc I think a 3x magnifier is the way to go. You can even get the primary arms 3x micro, which is this without an etched reticle and illumination. They do have a unity ftc mount for it

Great and thorough video. I am very curious to see how this optic compares to the Trijicon LED TA110 at 3.5x. That particular optic with green crosshairs is reported from Trijicon to have a 22+ week lead time in production and I could not justify waiting 5+ months for that optic. I picked up the SLx 3x to test as I already have a holosun AEMS and Eotech XPS. The Primary Arms definitely is a high quality optic and comes with a lot of mounting options right out of the box. I agree with all of your findings but would love for Primary Arms to take advantage of their prisms and etched glass to put more vertical and horizontal cross hair lines for holdover and windage. That would help these optics really compete with Trijicon. They can even charge more for such a dream optic as the SLx is really affordable at $300+ retail, and I still wouldn't have sticker shock. Keep up the great and honest reviews!

I put a 3X on my Springfield Hellion along with an offset mount for a micro RDS. It works, but it’s not at all intuitive. At 25 yards and beyond the 3x is pretty easy to deal with. Training with it inside 25 starts to get more difficult. Especially in low light. My astigmatism is fairly severe. I can deal with most red dots, though some are better than others. Eotechs are out of the question for me. Maybe I’ll try a 2x. I struggle with the offset. I’ve trained with M4s and Aimpoints for 30 years and have found it easier to adapt to a bullpup than to an offset optic!

Practice snap shooting with just a quick presentation with the 3x. Get it bright, get the eye far enough back to be out of the eyebox, scan with both eyes above the optic, then snap shoot by letting the illuminated reticle quickly index over the target, then break the shot. With practice, it's relatively fast.

If I feel I need an offset reflex sight for short ranges I’ll just use a LPVO with one or run a MAGNIFIER + Red Dot combo. Where I really think this prism optic could shine in on a very compact, very light .300 Blackout PDW. Just the prism and a flashlight to keep it slim. It won’t be a DMR but it’ll but it will be more than enough for shooting inside 300yd. It’s a compromise gun.

Question. I am looking for a rifle that can be used for close in HD all the way to maybe 400 meters. I would like a prism because of the sharp reticle and the no batteries. The x1 PA seems good for the close stuff, but for the range and precision I was thinking maybe adding a Juliet x4 with a QD mount that I would mostly leave off until I felt I would need/want it more. Do you think this would be a good option? I didn't want to go lpvo because of weight, and having this rifle's primary job of SHTF issues, I didn't want to have a higher magnification as mostly I would be shooting 0-200m, but then could add the magnifier for longer shots, recon, etc... rather than have a x3 or 5 prism with an offset. What do you think...am I on the right track for my SHTF rifle in my suburban environment that would be more fun for precision shooting with a magnifier that I could take off for keeping it light?

I'd love to see side by comparison with Vector Optics Paragon 3x prism. It's probably more of a direct competitor to the SLx 3x microprism than any other optic presented here. Full disclosure: I owned both of those optics and ended up selling my SLx 3x Microprism. While Paragon lacks auto-life and some of the reticle features of ACSS, I think it has significantly better glass, field of view, eye box, smaller body shadow, and just overall more usable.

Do you think the 3x PA prism would work with and A2 stock, or would eye relief be too far away?

I like the 2x a lot and I have two. I'm debating on muh 30-30, if I should add a 3x on top or a 2x. Any thoughts? The eye relief on the 3x concerns me as to where I would need to mount it, the 2x seems like it would be far more user friendly in the field, except for those times when you would like a bit of magnification.
@FMDad-dm5qo
@FMDad-dm5qo 7 ай бұрын
Would totally put the 2x on that lever gun. The longer eye relief (and longer optic body) will help you find a comfortable mounting solution. It actually struck me when I got mine that the GLX 2x would be perfect for a .30-30. (If you had the .300BLK version, I’d also be curious how well the BDC dots would line up for the .30-30 cartridge.)

All prism optics seem to have poop eye relief, despite being fixed power, and it seems to me it would be simple to engineer a longer eye relief. So I always hesitate on prisms.
