CDS Bipin Rawat Helicopter Crash | The Real Reason | Dhruv Rathee

In an unfortunate incident on 8th December, a military helicopter carrying general and cheif of defense staff Bipin rawat, his wife and 12 other passengers crashed near the hills of Coonoor Tamil Nadu. This was a modern Russian made Mi-17V5 model of helicopter which was going from Sunur to Wellington. It is used for advanced operations and also for professional use by Indian prime minister and the Indian president. Many people came up with theories on why this crash might have happened? Was it the bad machinery, pilot error or bad weather? In this video, I explain these theories and conclude which is the most likely one by comparing this with the famous basketball player Kobe Bryant helicopter crash of 2020.

Dhruv. I'm a pilot. It's never sole VFR aswellas IFR. Flying is always combination of visual and Automation.and route is amendable anytime.navigation can never be so stiff... But restricted visibility as u mentioned is defenitly a Contributing factor for sure.its very unfortunate and tragic

I think you have described in the best way More likely what you said is correct because i have seen a similar crash of a helicopter 20 yrs back due to bad weather when the helicopter wheels strike a high tension electric cables and went down but luckily no fire started and few of the passengers were saved

Even when manual mode (IFR) is selected for flying, the readings, alerts and alarms from the instruments will definitely be assisting the pilot. Assuming that the pilot had selected the manual mode at take off, and from information available, the weather at the destination having been bad, he could have shifted to auto mode (IFR) for landing in coordination with the ground control at the destination. Logically he would have tried to do this. The only imaginable reason why he did not or could not do this has to be malfunction of the instruments. ( I cannot imagine that formal approvals were needed to change the mode in such a crisis. ). So the only option left was to return in manual mode itself devoid of inputs or assistance from the instruments. The low lying clouds on the return route with such a handicap proved disastrous.

As the Chopper was flying in the lower altitude for visibility, it might have suddenly caught into a densely thicker sphere of fog . It had definitely blinded the pilot for sometime and the Chopper might have hit into something probably a high tree and caught fire. Then the pilot totally lost control and it might have crashed into the hilly slopes as well as bursting into flames.

fog is consistant in density , you might be talking about clouds which can mean that this could happen if the draw distance is lets 700 meters with in few seconds it could be 200 meters. and this place being soo much higher than sea level and mountainus it is more likely , this was also one of the biggest contributing factor for the worst aviation disaster ever in history on 1977
