In this video, we discuss 5 common mistakes that new pomeranian owners make so that new Pomeranian owners and potential pomeranian owners can learn how to better take care of their Pomeranians. These are the lessons that we had to learn the hard way when there weren't any videos and resources like this back then, and we're sharing with you now so you don't have to make the same mistakes that we did - so please don't skip it!
This video is not meant to shame or critize any Pom owners out there as we also made a lot of the mistakes mentioned in this video when we first had our Pomeranians. Don't feel bad if you make some of these mistakes! No one is perfect and no one knows everything the first time around! There's ZERO judgement in our channel! We're only coming from the place of sharing our experience, and trying our best to uplift the Pomeranian community and help other Pomeranian owners navigate this tough but rewarding job of being the "parents" of these fluffy dogs! We made all these mistakes so that you don't have to! ❤️

I just want to let you know that you shouldn't feel that you need to add captions because of your accent, it should be for viewers who are hearing impaired. You are amazing for being mullti-lingual and your videos are very informative and your poms are super cute . I have 2 poms atm, and another one coming soon so these videos are super helpful even though I have poms already.

There is nothing wrong with accents, that doesn’t mean those who can’t understand someone with an accent is also wrong too. As someone whose neurodivergent, it’s very difficult for me to distinguish what’s being said if I don’t have captions/subtitles or I ask for them to repeat themselves. It’s not that I want to not understand seining with an accent, I physically CANT. Please don’t make us feel bad for something we are slo just as incapable of doing as those with hearing impairments. This video was extremely helpful and thank you for making it, Cece!

Great vid! We recently lost our 12 year old Pom to tracheal collapse. We adopted him at approximately six years of age and never used a collar on him. These guys really have weak tracheas. One thing that I would have also included is being careful about keeping their teeth clean. Poms frequently suffer form gum disease and this leads to heart problems. Our Pom arrived at our house with no teeth. He developed a leaky heart valve within three years of us adopting him and he saw a cardiologist for the rest of his life.

Yes they have terrible teeth. You need to start as early as you can with getting them used to dental care. For tiny dogs they are a lot of work. But they’re definitely worth it!!

Active Pomeranians love to run around, which makes it extremely important to keep them out of danger. Kitchens offer dangers to puppies when a puppy parent cooks. A cook could spill something on a puppy or trip and fall. Puppies, like children, have to be protected when they are young because they don't yet sense danger.

As a Pom owner myself I totally agree with the harness and early socialization/training early on. Because we did this our pom is super friendly and social everywhere we go with him. He loves meeting new people and dogs which is great because he is adorable! We do shave ours though due to us not always being able to brush him off often. We did leave his hair long for the first several years before we started consistently shaving him. His groomer and I are very surprised that his hair has not grown back weird or uneven yet. He’s 10 years old now and only started consistently shaving him about 4-5 years ago.

Thank you for addressing the arm pit hair no one seems to talk about it. I brush Hudson every two days. If his eye stains get hard I use cotton ball dipped in warm water I blot or wipe gently to loosen up the hard stuff and use flea comb and it comes out easily. I'm gentle around the eye area. I know he doesn't do stairs so he sleeps downstairs as the stairs are steep and I don't want him to fall.

Your videos are the best! I wish I was in NY because I’d 100% be coming to you! I regret not getting my girl socialized with other dogs, but she was sick when I got her at 8 weeks, and by the time she better and fully vaccinated it was too hot in Orlando. She’s 10 months now and she’s not aggressive with other dogs, but very shy and doesn’t really know how to play. I want to get another dog but I don’t know when it’ll be appropriate timing.
@CeceFamily
@CeceFamily Жыл бұрын
Aww thank you so much!!! ❤️ At least she's not aggressive so that's a good thing hehe! But fearful dogs are usually incredibly challenging to train too as they're running away from the trigger instead of coming towards it. Just find a few close friends around for her to hang out weekly or daily if possible, and that should help to build her confidence slowly. Get another dog whenever you feel like you're ready for another year of having a puppy around - it's a lot of work to raise a puppy, and can be both mentally and physically exhausting we all know it haha! 😂

I try to socialize my almost 10 month Pom, but I’m so fearful that another dog may be aggressive and hurt her. She’s so tiny and my former fur baby (Pom) was mauled to death by a Rottweiler. I’m so VERY protective of her no matter the size of the dog.

I’m so so sorry to hear that! It must have been a very traumatizing experience for you! 🥺 I would have been traumatized for life if I were you too so I totally understand where you’re coming from ❤️ Maybe try to socialize your Pom with some of the dogs that you personally know and trust (such as your friend and family’s dogs) of the same size first? I’m sure if the socialization is with familiar dogs with good temperament of the same size, and especially when it’s supervised closely with equipments to break the fights handy, it will be okay ❤️

Very helpful video, thank you so much! All of these things are really good to know. My Pomeranian (his name is Nyro and he's a bit older than two years) is luckily quite well behaved, although lately he has been whining very often. We suspect it's because of a female dog in our neighborhood who is in heat, because he's also very active, humps our shoes sometimes, and outside he starts pulling the leash like he never does otherwise. It has been like this for two days now, but it isn't the first time he's like this and it usually goes away after some time, but we never know how to deal with this situation, since we definitely don't wanna punish our dog (we only reward him for good behaviour and tell him something is wrong by saying "no"), but the noises he makes are kind of aggravating when you're trying to do work or talk to each other.

On s again great video!!! Great information especially the collar and socialization factor. I think Pomeranians are naturally social animals this is what makes them great therapy dogs. I do want to suggest that sone Poms can be born with a natural instinct of a natural fear. It is critical as you state to get them socialized with so many different situations. I currently have a Pom that has this condition. From birth she has feared people and tends to back up even with those she is knows well. While I socialize her often I also realize that I can’t push her into accepting new people and situations that make this situation worse. So we carefully socialize her, give her time to adjust but keep introducing her new situations. What is truly amazing I have a son with severe disabilities and she naturally goes to him and spend quality time with him. I don’t know if she senses her is different and needs her if she feels more comfortable because he doesn’t push her to behave, we are trying to figure this out but we also recognize her comfort level and respect this so it’s a fine line to not it’s your dog into uncomfortable situations and socializations. Think about it this way, every person you meet aren’t friendly and some people are very comfortable being away from others. Poms can be the same way so it’s truly worth knowing where your feels relaxed and respect thus too. I have seen such different personalities traits in each and every Pom so that you don’t make the mistake and transitive a Pom bully pushing them too hard. My little one right now loves certain people l, my cat but you can see the panic hit as soon as she gets in the car. Even though we have given her many many rides in the car she just is uncomfortable with ur. Perhaps she has motions issues as well. We recognize when she has a had too much and don’t want to over do her exposures. Perhaps you can do a video of when you get a Pom like this? I realize you touched on thus in this recent video but what yo do when the Pom is truly nit able to handle things even with your efforts to recondition them to feel comfortable. She showed great promise as a therapy dog she just isn’t going to fill this role. So she will make a great pet, one thst loves you unconditionally but you have to address all of her needs. She too will Benedict with another Pom in our home which I’m used to as you mentioned if you train you Pom from the very begging to be used to other dogs they will be thrilled to have another Pom they can play with. I also wanted to ask you to share the best toys fir Poms. I have found that my shy Pom loves to “seek” so I have found lots of ways to have her seek treats, and toys and puzzle game thst she is very good at and it builds her confidence as well. Also nit every trainer as you pointed out are familiar with Pom training so beware of your trainer selection. You don’t want to select a trainer that goes for one size fits all approaches as clearly they don’t recognize the difference and Pons are nit German Sheoprard’s! If they can’t see this then they can’t train yurt dog. Thus is why your trainer talents are needed here. If you can share more training suggestion it would be greatly appreciate. Thanks again fir a great video many Poms and their owners will benefit and thank you for it.🙏🙏🥰

Mistake#1 has cost me $$$ with Lightning. The trainer used it and that's when we saw problems. Good on #2 & 3 thanks to your help on brushing, #4 is taking me forever to get rid of, #5 learned the hard way with TP around the house :), but now gated off from the whole house when we are gone...in case he decides to leave us a little brown suprise.

I highly recommend the Gooby No choke harness. My Pom puppy was still gagging with a regular harness until I changed him to this one. With my previous Pom, I always observed he seemed much happier after having a clip at the groomers- much more full of energy?

Thank you so much for your suggestion! We'll definitely look into it! Dogs usually have zoomies after a bath, and go crazy running around the house - it's actually pretty normal! Ours do it all the time too after we groom them at home and it's so much fun to look at hehe!

I did make one mistake when I got my boy. Roughly at 5-6 months old he had his first grooming appointment, I didn’t know much about the coat type and ended up getting him shaved… He’s 4 now and his coat is still recovering. I was so careful with my boy as a puppy, however he still got enough socialization. No collar, unless it’s already on and it’s only for a quick potty break. We did use an ecollar for off leash training, as we had tried everything else first. I definitely don’t recommend it for everyone, it’s just what my boy needed. We are able to get away with once a week brushing, because I am constantly checking his coat for matts. Most often I catch them when they can still be brushed out, and I clip them out carefully if I can’t brush it out. We use gates in our house to restrict his ability to go to certain places, and use a bathroom rn (his crate has needed cleaned for a while, I just haven’t had the spoons for it) when we leave the house and he doesn’t come with us.

My pom Sylvie is reactive towards people, dogs, and inanimate objects. She's slowly getting better but when it comes to inanimate objects, I have to nudge it with my foot to make her realize it's safe. When I got her, her old owner said she was 8 months old, but first trip at the vet told me she was 1-2 years old. I have a toy Aussie who used to have that issue but we've been able to fix it and he does much better now. My biggest issue is my papillon is extremely social but he also likes to cause trouble, so even if he's not bothered by the sight of other people/dogs, he'll alert her to it and she'll get into a barking fiasco. Still, she's getting better.

I have made mistake #2. I waited till she got all her shots and now she’s afraid of everything. I have her in training and my trainer says to start taking her to parks where she can approach people if she wants to to help build her confidence. I was thinking of taking her to my university. She gets really excited near people and pees and my vet said it’ll go away so I’m hoping it goes away soon. I take her on walks and she freezes every time she sees a person or a dog. I’ve been using treats to get her to focus on me so I’ll keep trying that

Hi! It could be all tangled up if they haven’t been brushed for a very long time and trying to detangle them now could be very painful for the dog if not impossible. In these cases, I usually suggest people to trim the matted area using the small trimmer that I mentioned in this grooming video that I made a while ago How To Groom Your Pomeranian At Home kzbin.info/www/bejne/rnvcpKaFh7CXd8U it’s much safer than using a scissors especially if you’re new to grooming. I hope this helps!

Love our lil Pomeranian, but the socialization thing we can relate to and can not get our lil guy out of the problem it caused, We live in Australia and got Rin February 2021. We got him at 8 weeks old, from the time he was born till we got him there had been bad bushfires. The person we got him from had been isolated because of the fires and everyone was told to stay inside because of the smoke, the bushfires lasted 2 months. Then for near 3 weeks after we got him we had torrential rain and thunderstorms nearly every day So where stuck inside. 2 weeks after getting our little man, Covid hit and we where put in lockdown for a little over 8 months. He is now 4, and while he is good with us and close family, (the few we could let him be social with thanks to fires, rain and covid) he is extremely reactive when taking him on walks or out, so often looking for places that have no people or other dogs :(

Don't crate any animal if you don't really have to. It makes their bones weak. Happy and healthy means building strong bones (run an empty soccer field daily) so falling down the stairs isn't an issue.. no gates necessary.

Thank you! ❤️ Maybe try playing the sound of motorcycle from your phone at home at a low decibel first and reward her with treats so she can make a positive association with the sound, and gradually increase the volume, and finally when she's ready - bring her outside close to a motorcycle but far enough so she won't react to it and repeat the same process? I hope this helps - this might take time to get rid of though haha! She's soooooo cute btw!!! I love her dress in your photo! ❤️ And hey my English name is Jane too 😛

Pomeranians definitely must be thoroughly socialized asap unfortunately my mother's pom was extremely ill and very delicate for several weeks from the day he came home and needed constant care for the first entire week which caused him to not only miss out on that vital time window but form the mother of all attachment issues. He's not a fan of strangers on the street outside the window and while he will tolerate the presence of people in public even large noisy crowds, he refuses to allow anyone to touch him unless my mom literally puts their hand on him and it does nothing but stress him out so she usually refuses 90% of the time he's fine with other dogs especially younger and surprisingly much larger dogs and he adores cats considering he lives with 3 but he is very picky with the people he allows around him

We got our pom, Baxter, at about 12 weeks and he's very reactive to other people, dogs, and inanimate objects that he's not familiar with. He wasn't socialized other than other poms at the breeder's. Since we got him, we have exposed him to many places, people as well as puppy kindergarten. He still barks so I'm curious as to how you trained your poms to not bark so much?
@CeceFamily
@CeceFamily Жыл бұрын
It's a difficult concept for me to explain in a comment but generally speaking, for fearful barking due to lack of socialization, you should try to keep a good distance between your dog and the trigger, far enough for him to recognize the trigger but still remains calm, and consistently pair it with high-value rewards, and also ask for a obedience cue like "look" to get your dog to focus on you instead of the other dog. That's the short version of it of course, I highly recommend working with a trainer in your area as soon as possible to give Baxter the help he needs. The earlier we work on a behavioral problem, the easier it's to get rid of it!

I'm going to be a Pomeranian owner in about 4 months, feeling pretty nervous! I feel like because of my anxiety, I might accidentally teach my Pom to fear stairs, big dogs, and kids, haha... Should I teach my dog how to use the stairs? And if so, what age should I teach them? Or would it be better to not teach them at all and just train them to wait for me to carry them up the stairs? The downside I could see of this is the dog not knowing what to do if there was a house fire and I wasn't there. While teaching them to use the stairs could risk some accidental injury if I forget to gate the area. Do you have advice for socializing your Pom with big dogs and kids that may be a risk for them? I'm thinking of putting a coyote vest on my Pom at dog parks to put my mind somewhat at ease, lol.

@CeceFamily Жыл бұрын
My first advice is to relax - everything will be fine especially when you've done all the homework beforehadn like you're doing now! Yes you can definitely teach your dog to use the stairs, at what age would really depend on your Pom's size and your stairs but I generally tell people to wait until they are at least 4 months just so that they're less clumsy, and also just gate the stairs when you're away. While it's possible to teach your dog to wait for you to carry them up the stairs (both of my Poms know how to wait for me even though they are capable of climbing up if they really want to), I wouldn't trust a puppy home alone with stairs ungated especially when puppies are so prone to hip and knee issue as their joints are still growing at this period.

There are always big dogs that are good and gentle with small dogs, and big dogs that aren't a good fit and play a bit too rough for their safety. It's usually pretty easy to tell one from the other once you learn how to read their body language. So you know just observe the kids and the big dogs's body language, and only let them hang out around gentler big dogs. I mean worst comes to worst, you can always intervene if it becomes too much for them so don't worry too much!
