Hi, i am planning on covering a floor in leather or suede, this looks like the way to approach it, in your experience can leather be stretched and /or trim fit like this and mated to a molded underpad?
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 6 жыл бұрын
Michael Tinnin I have not grasped the whole idea. But, I only would say the leather material could be just placed over the molded underpad, and trimmed off where it is necessary. It should not be stretched. Perhaps, the best in case of using leather would be to do the job in sections. Pieces perfectly fitted to the contour of the car floor. The edge of pieces could be binded and sewn individually then attached to the floor giving the desired shape.

You know, it is well-deserved. The greatest thing we can do in this world is passing on and sharing our experiences and knowledge. One day, some young man/woman will need to work on a project and will create it correctly without shortcuts with precision. People will ask how they did it...and they will say that they learned it from you. Knowledge is a power that very few a willing to share. To pass it on with such simplicity and clarity is just as powerful! I love your humility! Cheers!

I would recommend the use of 'trunk carpet' if you are not going to sew the cut edges. It means you could make the cuts and lay them over the car floor. Do not forget the underlay that helps to shape the carpet, insulation and above all it softens the feet treads. The cut edges of this carpet does not fray. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aoWraqWJprWKd9U If you are going to use the automotive trim carpet I would recommend sew it down to avoid the fraying of the cut edges. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oJ2spZiwf7x8Z6M More related information:kzbin.info/www/bejne/hIWampmna7GeaLs

Thanks for taking the time to educate us on techniques that a lot of people can pick up and learn that would take a lot of trial and error to figure out on your own. People can be selfish with their knowledge but you give freely. Not often a common thing in our modern society. If I could add a little tip for the other newbies out there - instead of using a grease pencil try using a piece of chalk. If you make a mistake its easily removed without any stains. Works for layout in upholstery and other tailoring. You can sharpen a standard piece of chalk to a chisel point with a piece of sandpaper for precision marking.

Dear Deniz, The cutting techniques on a real car are similar. If you want to sew the cut edges together do not forget to give the sewing allowance on the wrong side of carpet. In this video I only show the cuts but not the sewing process. These basic videos are the basis to understand a real demonstration I will do on a real car floor. Before the real demonstration I have to upload another basic video that shows two paralell cuts done on front part. it is mostly used on trucks that have the transmission tunnel not so protruded. If you just want to lay the carpet with its cuts over the floor it also works out. The only thing I would recommend is to get a good carpet that does not fray the wool edges.

Incredible work. However this looks to be for older cars with the round transmission tunnels. Anything for the 90's GM trucks with the square tunnel? Going to go have a piece of carpet cut for my crew cab and do it myself because the pre molded carpet is crazy expensive and not molded very well. The only thing I am afraid to do myself in the entire truck are the door panels and sun visors.

It is called automotive trim carpet because it can be shaped by cutting/trimming manually in an artisan way. There is a kind of burlap/jute on the backside where the wool piles are woven. The other kind of car carpet we mostly find in our cars is what is called heat molded carpet. This carpet can be shaped between big dies (male and female) . It has a kind of rubber on its reverse side. After applying some heat over it takes the desired shape. I consider these carpets very strong because of their rubber backing. It is called 'automotive trim carpet' which can be molded/shaped to a car floor by doing cuts on certain parts. The 'cuts' are then sewn down on the edges. There are 'heat molding carpets' that have a thick plastic on the reverse and are shaped by using a 'big hydraulic embossing press'. These do not need any sewing. At he beginning of the video you can see the cut edges were sewn down (do not forget include allowance) The edges of carpet material can be sewn together easily. @Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 3 жыл бұрын
I use a dense spreadable glue (brushable). Besides, there is a sticky product (it looks like tar/pitch) that AutoZone sells. It is not necessary to stick the whole carpet to the ground. Just specific parts (junctions, corners,etc.) to hold the carpet in place.

@@chaseaustin6898 You would need to find a dense glue. If you are in the USA: these are brushable glues. www.homedepot.com/p/DAP-Weldwood-32-fl-oz-Original-Contact-Cement-00272/100125525 www.amazon.com/-/es/Petronios-Master-Cemento-multiuso-cada/dp/B076DJQN5R These glues require the use of mask and goggles for application. In former comment, I forgot to add the adverb 'besides', sorry. I meant there is a very dense sticky product in black color that looks like tar and can be pasted in short lines on strategical points to stick the carpet to floor ground to not let it move. I do not remember the name but it is sold at AutoZone. It comes in little containers as if it were a toothpaste.

Do you sew those seams up? Or just glue them down in the car?
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 5 жыл бұрын
In minute 0:46 we can see it is been sewn down on reverse side. It is necesary to give the required seam allowance. I will do a video on a real car floor applying these basic techniques. The cuts are important to give the shape to transmission tunnel. If I would use a thick and hard carpet I only could do the cuts and lay it down over the floor with some glue below.

My buddy cuts and sews the carpet for me I glue it down with paint gun. Slower I go nicer job turns out. We measure from front to back side to side. Cutting edges sucks it can make your carpet look like shit if cut to short. Practice with scrap cutting trimming to edge. I get my buddy to cut my edges he has more confidence. Watch out for loom yarn will ruin carpet with screws.

I have not used leather for this project. If you are referring to the small mat on the left it is plastic canvas.

My trans tunnel is asymmetrical and changes width just before the seat so its narrower by the seat than under the dash. How would you handle that compound curve and offset?

You could get a molded one which are sturdier than trim carpets car upholsterers work with. What's the name of the material that's under the carpet. The one that looks like a ragg
@Cechaflo

It is called 'carpet underlay' also used as padding on car seats over a row of wires and springs. Upholstery suppliers sell special carpet underlays for a better insulation.
