Andy, thanks SO MUCH for making this video! I am a recently retired 60-year guy who has had the dream of making a cedar strip canoe in my brain since I first saw one glide past me on a Wisconsin trout stream when I was a kid. I was awestruck at its beauty and grace, and thought that someday, I would make one. Well, 3 kids and almost 40 years of career later, I now have the time and money to do this. I recently purchased the Canoecraft book, but couldn't make it past page 10 because it was such a slow read. So, I started searching KZbin a week ago and came across some great videos, but none that started from Square 1, which is building the strongback table - thank you! Your directions are clear, and your video is no-nonsense. I'm going to go bang one out and get going!

I made a few mods. 1) I bolted the 1.5" x1.5" station mold braces instead of screwing them so I can take them off (when building a S&G kayak with plywood). I labeled each brace to their respective spot on the strongbuck to make it easier when reassembling. 2) at 4:00 I cut a vertical slot in the leg spacer piece and used bolts that went through leg-spacer-leg so that I can lift any of the 4 corners since I will be moving the strongbuck around my shop with an uneven floor. Kind of a poor man's leveling feet.

Great videos, definitely informative and helpful. Would be easy to modify the feet for this to be fully adjustable and locking, will have to do a video on it when I make mine.

It seems a lot of people are referencing plywood strongbacks, but I only see the 2x10 pine plan in Canoecraft. Where did the plywood idea come from? I'm looking for some similar instructions, but more in depth...
@chronicwoodwork54665 жыл бұрын
Jaimelapoesie canoe craft is about as in depth as it gets. What’s your question? Thanks for watching. Plywood is cheap and stable. That’s what it boils down to.
@Jaimelapoesie5 жыл бұрын
@@chronicwoodwork5466 What grade plywood did you use? OSB seems to be the only thing available to me right now...
@chronicwoodwork54665 жыл бұрын
Jaimelapoesie it was higher grade than OSB, but cheap. If OsB is all you can access, it will work.

I look forward to seeing more of this - I hope to start my own canoe build later this year. Do you have a way to get the canoe out of that room when it's finished?
@chronicwoodwork54667 жыл бұрын
darklightBoy yes. It was definitely a consideration. I have a walkout basement at our new home here in Missouri. I was able to bring in an 18' long shipping tube full of cedar strips yesterday without any issue. I've posted a few "extras" that don't make it into my videos on instragram and Chronicwoodwork if you care to see. Best of luck to you and please let me know if you have any questions. -Andy

Yeah, the strongback method seem a much better method for building these.

Cool video Andy! I'm thinking about making one of these myself so I look forward to seeing the process. On a side note, do you happen to live in Indiana? I know it's random but I saw that "fiesta to go" bag in the background and the only time I've ever seen those is from a place called Hacienda (which also happens to be my favorite mexican food ever) and as far as I know they are only in northern/central Indiana.

Grant Swinehart Ha- that's one heck of a spot! Small world. I'm originally from Evansville, but left in 2009 with the Army. Hoping to move back and be close to family soon now that we have a newborn. Check out the other videos and let me know if you have any questions. Last, also check out Adam over at "a guy doing stuff". His videos are great. We do things a little differently, but it's good to get different options/approaches to see what's best for you and your tools/comfort. Best of luck!

Chronic Woodwork lol that's awesome! I grew up in South Bend! I'll definitely be following along, although I probably won't start mine for a few months. And I'll add Adam to my list of woodworking videos, I'm still pretty new (just started in November) so any new tips/tricks I can pick up are great!
