Recorded back in 2009 Cedric joined me again for a brilliant chat on all things Numan, please bear in mind this was never recorded to be aired so forgive the chit-chat.
Please help us raise money for the Ced Drumming Bursary.
When the Ced Sharpley Drumming Bursary was founded in 2012, we sponsored two pupils (one boy and one girl) - although we had to cut it down to just one per academic year after that. But since 2022 is the Bursary’s 10th birthday (and also the 10th anniversary of Ced Sharpley’s sad death), we wanted to do something extra special. With your help, we'd like to raise sufficient funds to sponsor TWO pupils once again - in tribute to Cedric and his memory.

Just heard Pt2 at last, absolutely brilliant to hear every moment of it. Thanks Stephen for the awesome interview which you steered back in the day, all the right questions, and such warmth with the legendary Ced. There’s been a few different drummers who’ve worked with Gary since, and they all have their merits, but for me Cedric and indeed the rest of the Dramatis guys will always be the pinnacle of it all, the best of the best. It’s so hard to put into words why the Sound was so special, but the nearest I can get to it, is to say that whilst yes it was kinda machine music, synths, etc, it’s was fully Organic, you could hear all the instruments being played, and I do feel that’s something that is missed from modern day Numan work, good though it is, you can’t beat hearing those Live drums, guitars, bass, violin, viola , or even sax etc. today it’s like Gary does the only organic work, the piano, the Soul of playing the synths still, then Ade with his incredible set of tools and whizzes and bangs adds the magic dust but it somehow feels….processed? Don’t get me wrong, the post Pure stuff is Good….just my humble opinion…but not Great, like the days Stephen and Ced were harking back to here. Machine music with real Soul. How wonderful to hear Ced talking here, I’d never heard him speak until this interview. Makes me miss him all the more now, 😢 but I guess he lives on in the music we listen to, over and over, we do have the freshly repackaged and rereleased Dramatis album to enjoy Ceds work too now, it’s a thing of beauty with all the other material included. and I hope he’s Up There somewhere, taking his well earned rest. Thanks again. Si.

Spot on Steve, i agree. The new romantic look was guff. How cool did Gary look on the cover of Replicas eh!? Such cool new wave rock style. And the red lapels on that jacket. He looked so bloody cool. As a youth i remember walking into a local pub one friday night, black dinner jacket top, black shirt, skinny black jeans and those suede pointy cuban heeled ankle boots, dyed black hair and sleeper earring. As i walked to the bar AFE kicked in on the jukebox. I felt so bloody cool. Youth is really wasted on the young.

The irony is, Gary IS still doing it, and back at the top of his game. So sad that Cedric isn't around to see him back at Wembley ❤️

But is he "doing it?". The pre 82 stuff is untouchable. Intruder is the first album i have never bought. Its just dull. Sorry, but i bet the reason why he has endured is people go because of the early stuff. That period was pure magic. I was not going to Wembly but a mate got me a ticket. I am glad i am going but for my own personal reasons and memories of being at one of the original 'farewell' Wembly nights. Lost the ticket years ago so do not know which night. That was my first gig ever. No i am not stuck in the past at all before i hear that old chestnut. Gary is no way near the genius he was in his breakthrough days.

Gary is now where near at the top of his game! When you listen to the early material, it has a whole different feel because he had a band and that band stamped their own talents on his songs - Paul's bass, Ced's beats, Rrussell's guitar - in the studio sessions. You just don't have that now. All you have now is Gary plodding along on his own with a bunch of software instruments (omnisphere mainly) and various samples trying to make a tune, and I will say that the tunes simply aren't there anymore. He was a great melogy writer and pre 1985 his stuff was really good, but now it's more production/sound based material and after 5 minutes it's just boring and dull. It's almost like he trying to put vocals to film material. Ade does a decent job of getting it up to production standard but production alone isn't everything. It's really sad but if that's how he wants to continue, that's his choice. It's also my choice not to partake anymore, and I am really, truly sad about it.

You can't see the Rockies at all from Vancouver. You can see lots of mountains, but definitely not the Rockies. Very far way. Hm... For an Englishman... That would be like seeing some mountains in Ukraine from the UK.

Best drummer Numan ever had, Ced understood the music pity he was replaced by Beasley who is terrible in my opinion. He sure loves those cymbals!

@@stevewalters4845 What has that got to do with an individual's opinion of Richard Beasley's drumming skills? I agree with John, Beasley is overrated and he's also right about the cymbal bashing. Ced was the best drummer Numan ever had. The End.
