Trust me when I say 80crv2 is better than O-1 and 1095. It's tougher, can easily be hardened to 61-62 hrc and in my experience has better corrosion resistance than D2 (which is supposed to be semi-stainless). It was originally developed by thyssenkrupp for industrial woodworking applications, like sawmill blades and such. It's also cheap, super easy to work with and sharpen. And it takes the absolute sharpest edge of any of my knives. For knifemakers, I think It's the holy grail of carbon steels.

I’d pretty much decided on the BK2 until I discovered this knife - seems to me that there’s little the BK2 can do that this knife can’t do, and I’m thinking “why not get this much cheaper and lighter knife for (at least) the same quality?”

@@whengrapespop5728 what can the bk 2 do? It's a 6mm thick piece of steel. The bk2 can do only hard work. But the 1095 from the beckers is for 1095 really good . Get the Jääkäripuukko you can do hard and normal work (and litte fine work) with it its more flexible than the bk2

While I agree on most part, its impossible for 80crv2 to have better corrosion resistance than D2 given both properly HT FYI.

I have pretty much the same experience. I have two wood carving knives with blades made of this steel (I am an avid amateur woodworker) and truly I would not choose anything else over those ones. I'd say the edge is useful up to 20% further than with 1095 or O1, before in need of lapping. I would especially highlight the useful properties of a narrow tip for inlay and marquetry work I often like to practice. It's quite obvious 80CrV2 provides the possibility of ending up as a very fine grained steel after a well conducted heat treatment process.

Great test!!! I buy 80crv2 blades and put custom handles on them. I always felt they cut pretty good but I knew the downfall was rust. Great video and information. Thank you for your extensive testing

Awesome testing results, I have a 140 an love it for what it is,I'm using it for bushcraft, super impressed by its performance so far an for the price it's sweet,ty,I'm very barely touched up the blade since I've had it for 3 or 4 weeks now,was still decently sharp,makes really nice curls an basically it's good for meat an food prep also.

Well it's 80crv2 not 1095.. I know heat treatment makes a difference but 1095 isn't exactly super strong. It's durable tho

People need to remember that what is demonstrated here is : the quality of this particular steel's heat treatment on this particular knife with this particular blade geometry. Plus: the convex might lose the paper cutting ability at 100 cuts but it might very well remain a better hard wood processing edge for longer than the V edge and the Scandi might stay a better finer wood working edge for longer than both. This kind of knife is typically not designed to be cutting kilometers of rope and sheet paper, more like doing wood stuff. Different edges fro different needs. The V is generally a compromise of convex and scandi

The most objective evaluation of knives I've ever seen. This is how far a test should go. Obviously, more precise tests could be done on more sophisticated equipment, but for the everyday user those would probably not tell more. Thank you very much for the very thorough work. Great Vid, 80crv2 is a big favorite of mine. I think the heat teat on the pukko and skrama are spot on. I think heat teatment is also a massive game changer with any steel and often overlooked by punters. Just a thought even though there are guidelines for all steels

80CrV2 is a good steel. I am using it for more of my knives. If you're getting into making blades, it is important to be aware that many steels vary in actual composition depending on manufacturer. Some that I'm personally aware of are 1084, 80CrV2, O1 even though they are sold as the same steel. Thanks for the video.

I recently ordered some 80crv2 for some slipjoints I am planning on making, it is a decent steel even if it doesn't exhibit particularly impressive edge retention. The first design I am planning on building is an overbuilt large single blade slipjoint.

How do you get the whole edge sharpened on the work sharp? Using that guide I ended up not getting the last few millimeters before the grip on some blades, I had to mod the guide by cutting pieces out. I thought you had the 20/40 degree outdoor guide, looks like the 25/50 guide that comes with it but set at 20/40 (it's discontinued now).

Wow man, your dedication is unbelievable. I need the stars to align to bring myself to do a single sharpening. Well fucking done. On another note, do you think you could do a video that summarizes the "sharpenabilty" to edge holding relation for the steels you have tested thus far? I think we all know there is a general linear correlation, but there are those occasional steels like Vanadis 4E, and S110V that are seemingly more difficult to sharpen, whereas something like CTS-XHP is a dream. Maybe a video that just looks at the outliers would be really awesome and greatly appreciated. Thanks again for all the great content.

Dude, excellent content as always (and I own both the 110 and 140 teravas), but also a note to commend your video style! Seems to improve with each video. I suggest creating and submitting a film short with Nicole Kidman or Hugh Jackman (or both) to the "Academy" about a lost hiker that has to sharpen their knife, after a plane crash, to survive in the outback. Or just keep making great and informative videos.

I had no idea they used 80crv2 I thought it was a lesser steel it’s a great steel like a harder tougher 5160 I heard a different steel on this knife a while back now I have to buy it chemically the same is different than how it wears sharpens etc

You should test the winkler woodsman, the blade is 80crv2 but they use a different heat treat

I read this would be like a 1080crovan. A bit tougher than 1095, perhaps has a harder time reacher a sharper level but i think the heat treat tends to be far more important than the base metal

can you please unleash to the max? i read 3 articles in knife steel nerds: 1.edge stability 2.edge retention 3.carbides in knives because i saw in knife steel nerds article that this steel has the best toughness for the amount of carbon because toughness directly correlates with edge stability it should be able to handle 15 degrees easily and not roll or chip and also that article that this steel has few carbides that correlates with wear resistance and edge retention so we can predict edge retention will only come from high HRC (in this case 57 is quite low....) on the other hand all of this just means it will be amazing when unleashed to the max! (it wouldnt roll or chip even at very low angle [and probably a different design very thin like chef knife would work as well]) what do you think?
