The TRM Atom is well made and a great design. I have other knives like that as well but for some reason, I'm not crazy about the Atom.

After watching Nick Shabazz give this knife high praise and listening to Cedric's synopsis on the steel, I got my first Atom in the mail today after the April 2021 drop. And it's everything and more. Thanks for all the info from both of you

Thanks for the review. We have started loctiting the pivots due to customer request. We had thought most liked to adjust after purchase, but customer preference seems to be leaning towards shipping with loctite on the pivot. Definitely working hard to increase availability. The challenge is to maintain the quality.
@CedricAda5 жыл бұрын
I can imagine - and yes I would definitely suggest even a weak-ish loctite at factory would be a good idea. I would imagine mostly enthusiasts are buying, but some folks who arent as familiar may not know whats going on. Thanks for stopping by!

I have a feeling that thinly ground knives that actually cut well are going to be the next big trend from knife companies. People seem to coming around on this lately. I've always thought it was funny that a $400 wonder knife can't cut as well as a $15 Opinel.

@@antimatter4733 :- We, as knife owners, are still influenced by the bane of consumerism, and corporated greed. Change the style, make it more manly, make movies about this or that knife's extraordinary performance, and we suck it up, and in a fit of impulse purchases, buy the newest & greatest. Medford is a good example of the extreme over built knife, almost never carried after the initial purchase "rush". The Sinclair folding knife is an example of a seldom used thin bladed knife, too dangerous to consider for EDC. As in women's fashion (and more and more in men's as well)...change is a tool to sell more to a gullible public. Take a look at knives that have stood the test of time, not fashion, and from that lot take your pick. You would probably buy fewer knives but carry the ones you buy more often.

Hopefully, the "KZbin bushcraft" phenomenon is starting to peter out a bit. People who actually utilize a knife for tasks other than batoning and firestick making are reawakening to the idea that 5mm blade stock *may* not be terribly versatile... :)

Thanks Pete. This could end up being knife of the year. A top contender, for sure! : - ) Make sure you buy the purple Loctite. Permatex 24024, or Loctite 222. And as you likely already know. Use a dab on a paperclip, and dab it on the internal threads. Then let it sit overnight, laying with the screw-side down. You're right of course, about the thumb-studs. That does need to be changed. As you mentioned. It's exciting that TRM has been working on some new CF contoured scales for this model, that'll bring the weight down to 2.55oz/72g. How crazy is that! It's also nice, that they are also making some Ti scales for it. Which should be available later this year.

Got my atom yesterday. Sold my viator and neutron in anticipation of getting the larger atom. $189 for the grey g10. Love, love, love it! The texture of the g10 is nice and grippy without being uncomfortable. This is the sharpest knife out of the box I've ever gotten, glides through magazine paper as if it's not even there. Action is very smooth. Nice deep carry clip. Perfect edc.

6:55 re: thumb stud access for lefties (of which I am one)... I recently discovered that this can more of an issue than I expected, such as on the Tangram Santa Fe which I frequently carry. Since I've gotten used to middle finger flicking with my left hand it hasn't been a problem. It's just another thing I do as a lefty in a righty world.

The pivot on mine backed out a lot as well. I tightened it many many times. I tried the blue loctite stick but it would still back out. Finally just used the trusty blue loctite liquid and have had no problems since. It seems like a good knife and I hope their hrc is actually at 61 or higher.

Questions for a future video: Is there a cutting technique that diminishes fatigue? Do certain blade shapes make cutting the sisal rope easier? Over a long session of cutting, is grippy G-10 more prone to promote blisters? Which body joints suffer the most? How much of an effect does a thin spine have on efficiency?

Here's another fairly large piece of criticism...that inset liner lock is pretty slick, but it's an example of what to avoid in locks. Not all liner locks are created equal, and for food prep and thinly slicing lemons, you're fine. But if I have to use a large EDC for anything heavy, and that's generally what large knives are for, I wouldn't touch that knife. If you don't have a Rat, I strongly suggest you get one. Check the lockup on a non-inset liner lock Rat compared to that Atom. I think you'll find that a Rat lock provides a good bit more stability than those liner locks that sit at the very edge of the blade. When you hear that $40 Rat snap in, you know it's pretty solid, and when you check it, you'll find there's far less risk of catastrophic failure and injury (imho). The only thing this video managed to do is to get me to shop around for a nice Code 4. The ergos on the Paramilitary 2 feel like they were custom made just for me.

Interesting comparison to the SpydieChef. Can you please say more about how the Atom’s blade performance seems better than the SpydieChef’s? I get that it holds an edge longer. My SpydieChef is my best slicer and is 0.013 inches behind the edge at the rear. For use on a cutting board, my Neutron has the blade low enough to only put about 1.25 inches of blade on the cutting surface. The SpydieChef has more than twice the blade length touching the cutting board for my hand. How does the Atom do in that regard? I haven’t tried a lot of thumb studs, but I like the feel of those on the Neutron. Nice review. Thanks!
