After owning a Ka Bar, carbon SRK, and Moras, I purchased the S1. The knife went straight to work on a backpack deer hunt with about 4-5 inches of snow on the ground, elevation 7000.' The woods were pretty damp. I didn't make camp until dark and had to process wood and food by headlamp. I carried the knife in the dangler with a small fire kit attached. That system worked for me: never interfered with my pack and was comfortable for spot and stalk type of hunting. Cold weather comfort in the hand and gloved hands. The sheath was easy to use with extra clothing. The knife is strong, comfortable, and sharp. Functions well in cold and wet environments (forest, mountains, and maritime) and is my woods knife of choice for foul weather. When I bought it, I believed it was NATO approved. In summary, I have confidence in the knife. Liked it so much I bought an F1. I paid about $170 to my door five years ago. No deer taken on that trip.

After several years of buying many “prestigious” knives Ive come to the conclusion that it isnt necessary. Also, very rarely if ever would the inflated price of these high end knives really be worth it. There is no doubt that many of the high end knives are in fact “better”, but the question becomes whether or not they are better to the point of being discernible when being used in a typical manner. After having LT Wright, Bark River, Fallkniven, Tops, Esee, William Collins, and who knows how many other brands (totaling some 20 or so different knives worth literally thousands of dollars).....well, what do I have now......a strongarm and several mora blades. I carry the strongarm for rough use type tasks, and a mora kansbol for more detailed tasks. More than enough to get the job done, and done well at that. Total for those two knives...$86 ($53 strongarm and $33 kansbol) So yes, these expensive knives are in fact better quality, but unnecessary for use......and when I change my mind again, and purchase yet another knife, I will let you know 😁

Jay-Rus: you were two years ahead of me mate...but I'm now on the train with you now. One heavy-duty beater (Terava 140) and one mora (2000 or Hultafors OK4). Total cost, when I purchased them...74 euro. The combination handles all my knife needs with aplomb. All my fancy knives were sold for a tidy little sum last year and that allows me to buy my chosen combination several times over if need be. Respect, for getting here first mate.

Ha, exactly how I feel about knives. Had them all (sold them all), Bark River, several models, ESEE most models, Becker the same. I prefer Mora. And I'm going to get myself this Strong Arm also. I have seen some hard tests, and it holds up really fine. Sharpening is not an issue. It's like tying shoes. Easy peasy.
@BradGryphonn
@BradGryphonn Жыл бұрын
Sound advice, Pete. Especially the 'don't buy an expensive knife if you're just starting out with knives'. When I started buying knives again after a many years break, I paid around $140 for the first one. It has served me well for six years or so now (N690 Bohler with Cocobolo handles Cudeman MT-5 for those interested). I then started buying different types of knives with different styles, steels, locks, and purposes. I found that earlier on I was far more careful with my more expensive knives than I was with my cheap ones, such as the cheap Moras and Hultifors knives. But now, after a few years I find I'm carrying my knives with higher HRC and more complex steels if I am merely cutting things, rather than chopping at branches and hacking into bony meats for the dog. Ironically, I have given away a lot of my cheaper, more robust knives to family and friends, so now my choice is becoming more limited. I carry my big Crooked River all-day, every day now because for what I use it for (slicing meat, cutting rope, bags, cloth etc), it holds an edge so I don't have to keep sharpening it. At worst, a quick run over with a ceramic stone and a strop and it's all good. Whereas, when I was carrying one of the cheap Moras around, I might have to fix the edge once or twice a day. Having said all that, I've decided to bite the bullet and get a Strongarm. One, for the beaterability of it, and two, because it's one of those classic knives, like the Buck 110, Opinel No8, Becker KA_BAR BK-2, and the Ontario Rat-1 to name a few. I like to 'collect' those classic brands and models. I have a Buck B500 but really should find a classic 110 (other than the cheap knock-off someone gave me LOLZ). If you read this far, thank you. I do ramble on a bit.

I have both and while I like my fallkniven, I rarely use it because I feel like the StrongArm can take more abuse. Maybe it’s all the tip breakage videos I’ve seen with the fallknivens. Maybe it’s fact that the StrongArm is less than half the price and I’m just more inclined to beat on it. Whatever the case, I find myself doing things with the StrongArm I would NEVER do with my s1 or even my a1. It’s a great knife and while it doesn’t hold an edge very long it’s not as if it dulls easier more than most. Honestly feels like it dulls at the same rate as my 1095 knives. Great knife! I will probably buy another for my truck at some point.

This is definitely an "Intense commenter trigger video" gotta love the haters LOL ....I ended up buying a Strongarm cause my Gerber Prodigy has been such an awesome workhorse for me. I am a everyday user of knives, I can confirm that the USA made Gerber's are excellent tools, they are easy to reprofile and honestly a good stropping after using them puts the edge right back into shape. I love their 420hc good stuff.

Coming from plenty of folding knives, looking into fixed blade survival types, not very knowledgeable... Gerber seems like the best bang for buck, and I was set on the Strongarm or LMF. Researching, looking for a reason to go with something else. Found it, in just the way that S1 balances and spins in your hand. And then the way the blade made short work of every task compared to the Gerber. Splendid.

Really nice video. Enjoyed that quite a bit. I'm personally a huge fan of the Gerber Prodigy. I'm in the minority apparently of people who actually like serrations when they're well done. I'd say that Strongarm with a half serrated edge probably would have ripped right through that rope with the greatest of ease and remained sharp afterwards. But for this comparison definitely made sense to have the same blade type. Would love to see more of these types of comparison videos from you man! You do them well with no bias or any garbage like that.

For A$80 I would say a better contender would be a Condor Bushlore rather than the Strongarm. I get it's probably not the style Pete prefers but for camp tasks the Scandi grind and high carbon steel (coated for rust resistance) mean it performs closer to the S1. The handle is also much more suited to wood/camp work and includes a leather sheath which is a higher value, if that's your thing. Interesting comparison though :)

Ah yes, the condor bush lore. I haven't had a chance to get one - condor is very hard to find here at good prices. I have another 'value vs premium' video on the horizonfor bushcraft knifes. I like the bush lore but the one I got was very soft and is prone to roll if I put my usual profile on it. I had to put a wide angle on it. I found that it sharpens very easily and quickly but needs a wide angle or it rolls. Might just have been mine (defect in HT) don't know.

@greekveteran2715
@greekveteran2715 3 жыл бұрын
The reason you find it hard to sharpen, is because it's a saber grind blade. That, creates a bigger edge bevel (more steel surface), which means you have more material to grind off. Also, compared to a flat non saber grind blade,it's a bit more difficult to find the right sharpening angle on a saber flat grind blade like this. If this blade was a flat grind and not a saber flat, everything I mentioned, would be easier and the sharpening would also be a faster process. PS Because this knife,comes with a bad bevel geometry and a really bad edge geometry from the factory..You have to reprofile this knife, to make it work properly.
@JustIn-op6oy
@JustIn-op6oy 2 жыл бұрын
@@greekveteran2715 what edge do you find works best on the Gerber? I think I'm going to scoop one up as a utility cutter for my summer camping/fishing/hiking gear. I've got the equipment and experience to throw a new edge on a blade that long without too much trouble, so if I can maximize the capabilities of the knife with a reprofile job I would appreciate your input.
@greekveteran2715
@greekveteran2715 2 жыл бұрын
@@JustIn-op6oy It all depends on the jobs you're going to use the knife for. Keep in mind, that 420hc, is a really soft steel. That means, that you have to: 1) Convex the edge bevel a bit. 2: Avoid a less than 20 edge bevel angle, if you''re going to use it on hard stuff, or genetally hard use like choping. Whatever you do, try to raise and convex in the same time the edge (blend it with the main bevel, to remove the transition as much as you can. That way, you will fix the 2 main issues, this blade has, which is the very thick behind the edge geometry, and the poor and uneven edge bevel it comes with. Always work slowly and carefully, don't rush things! Make more stops, to check where you at, use a fresnel lens if possible. Strop on stretched piece of newspaper (black letters part) and use the knife to see if you like it. If not, repeat a bit more, on medium grit. I wish I could do it for you, I love sharpening/reprofiling! Good luck!

The fallkniven will probably last longer - not only because of whats likely better construction, but because the steel is more wear resistant. I have a strongarm and like it a lot, but if you use it frequently, it'll require lots of sharpening and eventually youre going to drastically alter the edge geometry. But to be fair, gerber intends most of their budget knives to be widely accessible and to do their intended jobs well, although not necessarily for years and years of abuse. Good review, thanks. Also i cant sharpen convex to save my life, so the decisions made for me ; p

If you enjoy owning & fawning over fine knives, buy the falkniven. I also own some fine knives & love displaying them & lightly using them. However, don't kid yourself: the falkniven won't tolerate 1 minute of abuse, let alone "years" of abuse. Try prying the tip sideways with the falkniven... hint: the warranty says tip breaks aren't covered. The Gerber is a much shoddier made knife, from the way it is sharpened from the factory (as shown in this video) to the lower edge retention & lower ease of sharpening but it was not designed for that. It was designed to be an indestructible beater knife for combat. If you are fighting a man armed with a tire iron or baseball bat, you can block a blow with your gerber & it will not break. You can also stab a man in the coconut or Mcribs & not lose your tip. In my misbegotten youth, decades ago, I once stabbed a dufus in the coconut & it broke the tip off of my prized pocket knife (spyderco). It was so sad! I saved & scraped to buy that knife. 😢 Also, the gerber is a COATED stainless blade.stainless blades don't rust so no coatung is necessary, right? WRONG! I lost another stupid Spyderco knife because I used it to cut some driftwood to start a fire on the beach. I got some salt water on it & wiped it with my shirt. I was on an island, so no fresh water to clean it with. I had no drinking water, only beer. It rusted in only 24 hours!!! 😢

The difference of handle material is substantial. This is a point you evaluated as a draw. Let me elaborate... The S1's Thermorun has / is: Excellent physical properties. Low density allows lightweight products. Able to provide wide range of hardness (Durometer Hardness 55A60D) High volume resistivity for excellent insulative properties Thermorun has excellent rubber elasticity. Providing excellent seal properties Excellent recovery properties Thermorun has excellent durability. Good resistance to heat aging, water, weather and ozone. Good resistance to chemicals The Strongarm's outer rubber is softer and will erode and much faster.
@Ve-suvius
@Ve-suvius 2 жыл бұрын
Thermorun gets damaged when batoning . It's nowhere near worth the price. Mora is Swedish pride. Not overpriced Fallkniven . For the price of one Fallkniven I can buy tens of Mora's. Have a look at destruction tests on the Strong Arm. And say again the handle doesn't hold up. So much smoke curtain around these overpriced brands. VG10 is standard kitchen knife steel. On the brittle side. Nothing special. Not worth that price.

Gerber makes some of the worst knives while Fallkniven makes some of the best knives out there. You get what you pay for. The S1 will last 3-times longer if the knife is used and sharpened, even the handle material will last longer. Also the Strongmarm came with the worst thick and uneven edge bevel I've ever seen on any knife, while the Fallknivens have the best "Zero" convex edges out there. Sheath works better and will last longer on the ....guess which knife will last longer overall, will cut better, can work wood while the other can't and so on.. Don't fall into the trap of marketing.

@bdcochran01
@bdcochran01 5 жыл бұрын
Fallkniven used to make the SRK for Cold Steel. Refined the design in to the A1. I have been a dealer, owned a number of knives, know how to maintain them. Most people don't have skills, have no idea how to maintain a blade, and haven't thought out the application. Your choice depends upon right or left handed, age, physical disabilities, knowledge of how to maintain the knife, where you will carry the knife, who will use the knife. Have you ever wondered how a Scandinavian can live in a wooded area and not have to baton a tree or shave his arm. When I read a complaint from someone about a knife arriving dull, I think he is admitting that he doesn't know how to sharpen the same.

The Fallkniven S1 sheath is better than the Gerber Strongarm's (IMO) because: - The Strongarm's sheath holds it's knife too strongly. I fear I could get cut easily when I tried to un sheath it. - The Strongarm's stealth holds the knife so close, in Winter, if moisture gets in the sheath you get a stuck unusable knife. With the Fallkniven sheath it is designed loose to avoid the problems above.
@vashonmart
@vashonmart 7 жыл бұрын
sweetcostarica I have both and honestly, I hated falkniven sheath for same reason. unless I use the snap, it had no retention. whenever I had to doing something that requires me putting the knife in the sheath and out repeatedly, it annoyed me having snap it so I do not loose the knife. in the end I got kydex sheath and threw away original sheath. while strongarm has retention without the snap so it was wonderful to work with it and not have to worry about loosing the knife.

Hikeyourmind I agree with you. If you wanna cut apples go for a gerber. But for survival and bushcraft tasks the fällkniven is way better. I do trips. Sometimes I'm out in the wilderness for several days. If my knife got dull during that time it would be a catastrophy for me. Can not use a knife that doesn't work even if it saved me 50 $. By the way I know 100 inexpensive knives that I would prefer in comparison with the gerber crap.

I have both and love my S1 very much; however, it is strongarm that rides on my belt when I go out. It is tough knife that take on all kinds of rough jobs. I dig fire pit with it, split reasonable width wood, kitchen duty, carving duty, anything I throw at it it does not fail me. folding saw, small skinning knife and strongarm. I took S1 out once and came home with knick on the blade. my fault I know but core of that blade is too hard. good for holding edge but not for rough work. my beloved S1 is now resting on my wall and I do love her but strongarm stays with me when I need knife.

What a biasedreview lol tell you I get the fall- try banging into a tree and then try to climb up on it, or stab into wood deep and pry up on it I guarantee your knife will break and the guards are much better on the Strongarm, as well as the sheath there's no comparison. However I do like the fallniven very much as well as your review, and if the StrongArm had as good of steal as VG10 it would be a blowout. And the savings about $90.00 man a person could buy a lot of extra gear DONE. 😠 and the WINNER IS THE STRONGARM.

All the comparisons you make are not really valid in terms of price, except for the steel and blade construction. VG10 is a far, far superior steel than 420HC. The Fallkniven is made in San-Mai style, which is a laminated blade with a high carbon core and a stainless outer layer, which makes the construction justifiably more expensive than the one from the Gerber. I wouldn't buy any knife that uses 420HC except for Buck, which introduced that steel in the market and has a proprietary quenching system which makes the steel tougher than the same steel used by other manufacturers. Your comparisons are highly subjective and uninformed to say the least.
@CedricAda
@CedricAda 7 жыл бұрын
Alberto Perez-Pfeifer In what way are they uninformed? I would suggest the opinion of someone who owns both knives and has used both extensively are fairly informed. I am trying to say that its possible to get a good knife with the basic capabilities of the S1 for a low cost

That's not what I said. I completely agree that you can get an excellent knife for much less than the S-1. That's not the point. When you compare pears and apples, the comparison is unfair, because you are comparing things that are different. Any car would get you from point A to point B, but comparing a Kia (Gerber) with a Mercedes (Fallkniven) is absurd, above all if you just don't know why one is far better than the other. You have to start considering the premise that there's a reason for the price difference. He doesn't. You don't review things that you don't know.
@stalememe6407
@stalememe6407 7 жыл бұрын
Alberto Perez-Pfeifer far far superior? Lol I never new chipping was superior feature, plus it's harder to sharpen and the edge holding difference between both steels are so marginal in real world use you can't tell the difference.
