The belt scene was the most brutal scene in the entire series. Peter Reigert didn’t want to do it because it was originally written that Tony ripped Zellman’s underwear off. So Peter and Tony convinced David Chase to take that out. On my rewatches of the series, when it gets to the part where Tony is in the car listening/crying to ‘Oh Girl,’ I move to the next episode. I skip the brutal belt scene.

Tony immediately suspecting Zellman because of the beating is great.
@StudioMod3 ай бұрын
I find the cop getting fired situation interesting because it shows that Tony isn't actually a psychopath. He actually felt bad about what he did and tried to reverse it... just by seeing the results of his actions and nothing more. And it bothered him for an extended period of time. If Melfi had seen that she would have understood in more complexity perhaps that these men undergo the same thing many men do who go to war. In fact, they quite literally think of themselves (and refer to themselves) as soldiers. There's a mental realm you can enter psychologically that allows you to fight and commit atrocities under the self-assurance that it's for survival. These guys grew up in a certain lifestyle with very specific types of father figures. They are able to have that mental separation where they love and respect their families, animals, citizens (sometimes lol) without losing their edge or their violent, animalistic qualities. It doesn't make them healthy, but it also doesn't mean they're total sociopaths. They're just indulgent and rationalize it to the point where they're the heroes of their own story. They don't see themselves how society sees then and it creates a similar situation to that of a soldier. The belief that what you're doing is okay keeps everything in line. They DO have principles. For instance, outright sexual assault isn't typically seen from most or any of the main cast. And they sort of recoil at the idea of explicit bodily torture, especially when its one of their own (they operate mostly on the THREAT of that sort of thing, like with the Jewish rabbi thing). It's very different than the modern African American gangster scene where most of those people grow up not with hard fathers with strict rules and lifestyle expectations, but NO fathers to speak of. It's virtually two completely different things, even though at first glance, they appear as a similar thing.

Wait it just hit me that Tony may have beat up Zellman in part because of John and Carmine lol. Idk how it connects to make him the victim but Tony could be like "this damned guy has me in a conflict with Carmine" like projecting the blame on him. Well honestly it's probably just the girl but i think it's a million things. The guy losing his job, the girl, Zellman being tied to HUD, eh a lotta things. This show has so many layers it's crazy Never thought about finding that specific connection there. Maybe it doesn't exist. Playing both sides maybe. Territorial. Something.

1:34 - two of the ducks...that construction of The Esplanade will of course destroy any animal habitat around the waterfront for miles. They'll have to use Tony's pool from now on.
