Join us in this video for a walk starting from the village of Llanuwchllyn near Llyn Tegid (Lake Bala) in North Wales, and skirting around and a across a hill called Cefn Gwyn. I will share the route below on OS maps, but I would only follow the route if you are a keen and intrepid supporter of maintaining our public rights of way! Sadly, it was an all too common tale of dangerous and poorly maintained stiles, obscured footpaths and other hazards! Beautiful countryside, nevertheless!
Many thanks for watching!

You and Maria had quite an adventure! It sure was a challenge finding the trail and surviving the brambles and stickers… and in the hot weather too. Maria was quite a good sport, I hope you guys had a nice meal afterwards!! Beautiful views of the farmlands and forests of North Wales 👌💚🌳👍👍

Hi Jennifer. It was supposed to be a nice gentle ramble, but turned into a real slog with those blocked trails! The day was much warmer than it looks on the video too, so we were both pretty wiped out by the end. We did make it down the road for a meal though! 👍😁

Nice walk in a nice area and I am already missing those nice sunny days, mind you, something I never seem to get whenever we go to Wales. The spooky forest looked a bit steep at times but a good view from the grassy summit, good day and yes, very interesting one indeed, cheers Alan

Hi Alan. First too days was like a mini heatwave, but then normal Welsh weather resumed! 😁☔ This was supposed to be a nice gentle ramble, but got quite difficult with the blocked paths and missing stiles! Great views, but we were glad to get back down for a pint in the end👍☺

Sure is a nice area to walk through for sure. A little bit of everything...and even great views down in to the valley. If only we had public rights of way here...so many access points to trails being bought up and developed as private property. A wonderful day and memories made. Bruce and Otis
@DesGreene

Hi Bruce & Otis! Those rights of way are such a great asset here. That's why we get so wound up when landowners try to take them away from us. Fantastic views on the walk though, and as you say, memories (and more than a few cuts and bruises!) made!👍😁 Thanks for watching & see you soon👍☺

Hi Simon. Yes, another tale of blocked rights of way 😟 I seem to be getting good at finding them! Such a beautiful area to walk though. I was too knackered to do Aran Benllyn next day though, so it will have to wait for our next visit! 😁 All the best & take care👍👍

Hi Terry. I didn't even film the worst of it! Getting out of that pine plantation was a nightmare! If that's the SAS, count me out! 😂 Anyway, another tale to tell, but probably not a route I'd recommend! All the best and cheers for watching👍

Loving the watercolours Des. Despite the iffy paths, the area looked brilliant, some nice woods and old lanes. Good for fungi in the right conditions, I'd wager. Hope you got the tick out okay? Bye for now, Chris

Cheers Chris! The paths for the second half were in an awful state. I didn't video the worst of it, it was such a battle, but we were cut to ribbons! The tick removal wasn't the most elegant as I'd forgotten my tick rweezers, but no ill effects thankfully. It is a lovely area. I never got do Aran Benllyn, so I will be back! 😁

Watched Blue Zone last night, and you guys are doing it right with your steep hikes. Loved seeing the sheep and horse. The lake is just gorgeous. Good info on it and pretty views from the hill of it. So my beautiful trees. What a beautiful day; even though it looked like it could rain at any moment.

I've never seen Blue Zone. Is it the film about places where people live longest? They probably don't have the pubs we have though! 😁 It tends to undo all the hard work! It was a lovely area, but tough walking! All the best and take care 👍☺

Yes Wales has been spending to much on 20mph signs lately to fix up right of ways. I did some survival training in that area when I was young and foolish. Thanks for the memories.

In fairness, probably forestry and farmers rather than the council at fault for once, David. Could have done with some survival training for the second half of this walk! 😂 Thankfully I put my water filter in my daypack, or we might have been in trouble on such a hot day!

That seemed like a slog Des. I hate it when you plot a route and there is no way through, or you have to fight through brambles and nettles. The temptation to itch it quite high. Thanks for sharing, I still enjoyed the hike. If only there was a trig on every hill, eh? Have a great weekend, Des.

Hi Steve. It's a lovely area. Should have been a nice easy walk, but the second half was a real pain with badly maintained paths and missing/broken stiles. I should have been doing Aran Benllyn on my own the following day, but I was broken! 😂 Anyway, good excuse to go back. Cracking little pub in the village too👍 Cheers for watching and catch you soon👍

Top one des. Loved that all the way through. A civilized start but it soon got a tad wilder the way we like it. Steep and with some bushwhacking. Good effort on the Welsh there - you were close on them all I reckon. Well, I imagine you got back down super mellow. An understatement probably. All the best. Mark
@DesGreene
@DesGreene 9 ай бұрын
Cheers Mark! The second half got pretty rough. Didn't even show the worst of it, battling through that pine plantation. When we finally found the stile to get across the barbed wire fence, there wasn't even a trace of a path leading up to it! We got back down knackered and lacerated, rather than mellow 😁 I've been learning the Welsh for two years now. It's slow going, but I was managing to have a bit of conversation with people 😁 All the best and thanks for watching👍

Hi Des, I enjoyed watching you from the comfort of my sofa, but sounds like it perhaps wasn't so enjoyable for you and Maria! 😄 Always love a good walk in Wales, but sounds like you had a hard time on the route with the thick plantation, broken stiles, hard terrain, etc. Views over the lake looked lovely anyway! 😅👍
@DesGreene
@DesGreene 10 ай бұрын
Hi Patrick. The second half was definitely a struggle. The forestry work had destroyed the right of way in two places, and our legs and arms were cut to ribbons by the time we reached the broken stile (that was almost as dangerous as crossing the stout barbed wire fence anyway!) Beautiful views, but not a route I'd recommend for the gentle country ramble we'd hoped for! 😂 Cheers for watching! All the best👍☺

Wow Des. That looked like an SAS style yomp!! Especially in that heat. Top work for getting around that in some pathless terrain and little used paths. But some stunning views from up around there mate. Lucky you discovered the unwanted visitor before too long too 😨 Felt both your pain on that one - much easier sitting watching it 😃

The second half of the walk was real mare Dave! I didn't even manage to film the worst of it...beating through the pine plantation trying to locate the stile! Ay up Des. Funny you should mention blocked paths and removed stiles as I was only talking about that earlier today with one of my local Ramblers group. Tis a shame how many paths we're losing. Anyroad, lovely walk and lovely area me owd cocka. Ay a good' un 👍🙂

Hi Sog. It's especially frustrating when you hit the problem at the furthest point of your walk. Two paths clearly marked on OS map had been destroyed by forestry work, and on a hot day, your pleasant walk turns into a nightmare! Oh well, nice walk anyway, and the paths have been marked as used on the OS app!👍😁
