DIY Painting and Refinishing

Күн бұрын

Follow along as I paint my clients kitchen ceiling. I was hired to paint the maple kitchen cabinets in this home along with the kitchen walls and ceiling. The homeowner knew his ceiling could use some paint, but he didn't realize just how yellow it had become over the years from all of the cooking.
I decided to prime the ceiling with one coat of Kilz 3 primer and top coat with two coats of Glidden Ceiling White.
Sprayer Used: Wagner Control Pro 170 amzn.to/3TeC9gQ
Primer: Kilz 3 amzn.to/3IAPH13
Tape: Frog Tape Delicate Surface amzn.to/4c8tqFz
Plastic: amzn.to/3vcyvfq

Really enjoy your guidance, did notice you’ll have paint in your hair again. Good thing you told the home owner about the yellowing. Nothing like an add on. The finished job sure looks magnificent. 😊

Very nice finish. Could you make a video of your clean up procedure? I particularly would like to hear or watch how you clean out your 515 tip. Just today, I had the exact same problem with my 411 spray tip and was wondering how to save it? Thank you.

Yes, this is when you must prime. Only Sherwin Williams ceiling paint works for me.

Would you ever spray kilz 3 when doing cabinets or is it always Zinner smart prime? Are those products similar? Any other tutorial I've followed they've always used BIN. Can I get your feedback? Thanks

@diypainting 7 ай бұрын
I going to try to keep this short because I could go on for too long on this, BIN is a great primer, but after that, I don’t like anything about it. The VOC content of BIN is 550 grams per liter, which is huge. It’s awful for your health to breath and has warnings against skin and eye contact. When I used to spray products like this I would wear a painting suit, put in ear plugs so I wouldn’t absorb anything through my ears, wear a full face mask to cover my eyes along with mouth, wear a hood and gloves. You also have to think about fumes going through the entire home to everyone in the home. Cleanup is also awful as you have to buy denatured alcohol and clean everything with that. So that’s an extra expense and Btw VOC content of denatured alcohol is essentially 100%. Sherwin Williams Extreme Bonding Primer or Extreme Blocking Primer, STIX, Smart Prime and other water based primers all typically have less than 50 grams of VOCs per liter, making them drastically better for everyone in the house and the environment. Whenever these fail to block a stain such as leeching tannins, I’ll hit those small spots with one quick shot of an aerosol Kilz spray. Original Kilz is also high in vocs but i’m typically using 2-3 quick small shots of it compared to spraying an entire kitchen. Imo anyone saying a DIYer should use BIN is giving terrible advice. Unnecessary, terrible for your health and environment and will create additional costs in protective gear and cleanup. Sorry. That ended up long!!

I have watched your YT video regarding electric sprayers I have one question, I am working on a kitchen which looks terrible and I put a toe of work into preparing it to paint. I bought a sprayer gun My problem is that when I spray the paint is coming like dots not very consistent. When I add water it looks better but the paint is leaking on the cabinets like water... Maybe you have any advice that I can try to do. I was using a manual and set up everything properly using strainers etc. I would appreciate any guidance

This question is not related to this video but a question regarding your work on refinishing kitchen cabs...what usually the price difference from refinishing vs new cabs? and yes i'm aware of every kitchen is difference with cost ect..but just ball park..you talking about 50% of cost for new cabs?

A little tricky to answer since there are so many variables, but I'll try. DIY Cabinet Painting: $400 - $1,000 depending on what tools you already have. Hiring a Contractor: $3,000 - $10,000 depending on size of kitchen. If you wanted new cabinets and use the cheap flimsy stock cabinets in a hardware store, the average kitchen would likely be $3,000-$6,000. This would be similar to painting your cabinets. But most homes already have better cabinets than these. Mid-Range cabinets would likely be in the $8,000 - $22,000 range to go with new. High end cabinets can be $20-$40k and up. If someone already has mid-high end cabinets, then painting them is a fantastic choice. It can give them a brand new look. Hope this helps!

Hi, I'm new to your channel. I did a search for popcorn ceilings on your channel. Nothing came up except a video about cutting in. I saw a couple of videos where it appeared you painted popcorn ceilings, but no tips that I caught. Do you have a video drilling down on painting popcorn ceilings? Thank you. (PS: I detest popcorn ceilings but I will have to live with them.)

I don't have anything on popcorn ceilings specifically, though I have it on my list to make some day. This is the closest one I have: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e5fCfKGcaauph7c

How tall are you? Looks like you’re almost touching the ceiling while painting

An average 6’1”. So no touching it, but these are standard 8’ ceilings.

How do you know when to grab a new sanding sponge? I feel like I’ve gone through a lot.

They last quite a while except the edges get worn out and can make sanding in corners hard.

Looks like a knockdown texture ….the only thing you missed was not back rolling….I know you sprayed both directions but back rolling is painting 101….
@diypainting
@diypainting 7 ай бұрын
You should not back-roll ceilings unless there is a specific reason to do so such as you are not good at spraying and the spray comes out uneven. The only real reason not to spray a ceiling would be because you don't own a sprayer. Rolling out a ceiling can easily cause damage while not providing any benefit. Rolling leaves stipple and can cause old texture to come loose from the ceiling, thus creating a drastically bigger problem. Spraying on the other hand gets you a perfectly even finish (if you have experience spraying), applies the paint more evenly and with a thicker coat all while not disturbing the previous texture on the ceiling.
