Thanks to Rafe for a superb dissertation on the Great Man. My prized possession is an ancestor's cabin trunk, upon which, allegedly, he and Churchill and others played cards and supposedly gambled, whilst at school. Going to his funeral was an event never to be forgotten.

Thanks for a marvelous reminder about the importance of meaningful history as personified in Churchill. I hope that his meaning will be restored to British education and in the public sphere.

I heard him on the wireless as a toddler early 40s and though not understanding his words, his timbre made me sad or happy. The greatest leader and man of his time. Churchill’s oratory has never been bettered, I’m privileged to have lived at the same time as he.

I was 9 years old when Churchill died. My father who had fought in the war, took one of the dining chairs and moved it away from the table into the centre of the room to listen to Churchill's funeral on the radio. I had never seen my father do this to listen to anything, so instinctively knew that this was a very sombre time. I also took a dining chair and sat alongside him as I knew he was paying his respects. I have never forgotten to this day. We didn't have a television at the time, but have since seen the respect shown on Churchill's journey and the thing that stands out most to me are the cranes along the Thames that 'bowed' as he passed by.

Good man Churchill. You called a spade a spade and kept the Empire intact as long as you were able bodied. A lot of whiners these days will say different and yet still flock to English shores. Churchill you are a legend! 💥💥💥

In India we were told how Churchill refused to release food during Bengal famine. But one must remember he was in the middle of a war, a war that could nearly destroyed Western Europe as we know it. Blaming one person for handling of famine that affected India 4000miles away seems wrong and convenient. More I learned about history as an Indian I came to admire both Churchill and Gandhi! History could have been very different and present would have been less pleasant without Churchill.

THANK YOU for a much needed review of Churchill - after all the bigotry of the Left we need to know true facts about this great man. Mistakes and mishaps only made him stronger.

A quote from Churchill that applies to Starmer: Dictators ride to and fro upon tigers which they dare not dismount. And the tigers are getting hungry.

There was once a story of a problem that vexxed him, where he was unsure which way to proceed, because of the conseqeunces to everyone. His eventual solution ? To take a walk, sit down on the underground and ask people their thoughts. Strange world it is, that such would now appear to be, such a radical and shocking thing to do; Mixing with the very detritus beneath their feet, let alone seek their advice.

The wonderful portrait Yousuf Karsh made of Churchill has a great story behind it. Churchill wanted to be portrayed with his trademark cigar, the photographer said lose it. Churchill refused, so Karsh moved out from behind his plate camera, walked up to him, yanked the cigar from his mouth, went back behind the camera and pressed the cable release. The great man's look of pride and petulance was perfect. As it turned out Churchill was so impressed by the photographer's chutzpah in daring to be so bold that they became lifelong friends.

My favourite Churchill put down was not the one to Bessie Braddock but the one delivered to Margot Asquith: MA: Winston, if I were married to you I should put poison in your coffee. WC: Madam, if I were married to you I should drink it. Couple of other points. There was a great picture of Churchill, I believe taken in the summer of 1940, brandishing a Thomson sub-machine gun. He looked like a Chicago gangster. And deliberately so in my opinion. As for the greatest Britain, I am going to be a heretic and say the second greatest Britain after one Horatio Nelson.
