In WW2 tesla/Westinghouse did high energy dazzle beam, galium-L.E.Ds for the navy. The NIF laser is based on fibre optic amplifiers.

NIF's ICF research also models what happens in a thermonuclear weapon, where lasers are used to create an inward shock wave instead of X-ray ablation. Still a long way off from full power fusion though.
