Celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame Wednesday (26 April) not far from where the Oscars are held. Puck is the longtime chef for the Governors Ball following the Academy Awards.
Director Brett Ratner and television personality Larry King were among the guests joining Puck and his family at the midday ceremony.
The Austrian born chef moved to the United States in the 1970s, when he was 24 years old.
Aside from cooking for some of Hollywood's biggest stars, he hosted the series "Wolfgang Puck" on The Food Network for five seasons, beginning in 2001. He has been a regular guest on ABC's "Good Morning America" and is regularly seen on the Home Shopping Network.
Despite his on-air presence, Puck never thought he'd ever qualify to receive a star on the Walk of Fame.
"I asked Billy Wilder one day. He said 'Just write a movie, or direct a movie or star in a movie,'" Puck said. "So I said 'Well I'm never going to get one, forget about it I can't do that.'"
But he got one anyways.
"So I think for me to achieve that I think it's an amazing thing," he said. "I'm really humbled and very proud to be a citizen of Los Angeles and I think to me there's nothing greater here than to be immortalized here on Hollywood Boulevard so that my children and my grandchildren can walk by and say 'This used to be our grandfather.'"
"Rush Hour" director Brett Ratner thanked Puck for keeping his tummy full most of his life.
"Wolfgang has been feeding me since I was a young boy," began Ratner. "My beautiful figure is mostly because of Wolfgang, all his delicious food, all these years."
Puck began cooking as a child with his mother, a chef in the Austrian town where he was born. He began his formal training at age 14 and created his first restaurant in 1982 -- Spago in West Hollywood.
"There's no way to put this lightly. Wolfgang Puck changed Los Angeles," King said. "For a long time maybe forever, until his arrivals Los Angeles was known as a fair to average food town. San Francisco got all the headlines. Los Angeles was way behind. Wolfgang Puck started a trend. He made Los Angeles a great place to dine."
Today Puck's name is on more than 100 restaurants and cafe operations worldwide.
