In this video, Rich explains how to create a click track in Melodyne that follows the live performance of a band, and how to export it as a tempo map to a DAW like Studio One. To do so, Rich first shows the tight ARA integration of Studio One and Melodyne. He illustrates how to find the tempo of a piece of music, and make the metronome sync up to the imported audio. He then goes on to demonstrate how to ensure the bar and beat markers of the song line up where you desire. Next, Rich demonstrates the importance of ensuring sync throughout the entire song by showing how to stretch individual bars and beats as needed. Rich also shows how time signatures can be altered if you wish to count the rhythm differently. He then displays how to make the tempo constant over a given time frame. Finally, Rich exhibits the ease of dragging this tempo map from the audio clip into the session, so the click track will match the audio throughout the entire song.

If you are trying to do this in Studio One and the tempo is not being detected, it's most likely because the audio file itself already have a tempo assigned to it. A way to fix that is to right-click on the file and where it says 'File Tempo' it will probably say whatever tempo your Studio One session is set to (i.e 120). Change that to 0 (zero) and press enter which will change it to 'Not Set'. At that point you can do the 'Edit with Melodyne' function and then the plug-in should be able to detect the tempo. I hope this helps someone, I'm a newbie with Studio One and Melodyne and this frustrated the hell out of me! :)

Been using Sonar in one iteration or another, for 25 years. I had always wanted to do this but was unable to figure out how. Even when Melodyne came out and I had Melodyne version Studio 4. I couldn't get it right. NOW, I can't wait to try this . I have a whole CD of Carole Kaye Bass Lines that were played live without a metronome and wanted to play along with them, maybe add drums. Now I have half a chance. Thanks. Great video.

I've discovered this tempo map creation works really well when I want to double-track an instrument or vocal. (With one run-through of the song going into the left channel, then another into the right.) I will record the first "take" of the song into the left channel, then use this tempo map technique to map out that tempo into Studio One... Then I can have a nice click track to play against when I record the right channel "take". That really helps to get the second track close enough to the first to build a nice fat sound but leaves those small human imperfections (which we all love) in each take. This works great!

01:47 Your words about "keeping the human performance" are well taken, Rich. A good example is the remastered version of the Beatle's "Here Comes the Sun". Opening the track in Melodyne and creating a tempo track for Studio One shows that the tempo is all over the place in the studio version of the song. In fact, the tempo is almost always in a state of (slight) flux. (Never mind that they took equal liberty with sticking to a constant pitch... but that's a topic for another day). But the point here is that if a person records the entire song at 129bpm (the approximate tempo speed), two things will happen. 1. The tempo of the recorded track and the original Beatles track will quickly be out of sync. 2. The song recorded at a constant tempo will lose that "human element" feel the Beetles put into the original. It will sound like dull and lifeless "elevator music". So creating a tempo track in Melodyne from the original recording and importing it into Studio One gives a perfectly synced click track for both practicing and recording the song. I love this! Side note: Thank you for the clear down-to-business videos you create, Rich. It's truly a pleasure learning from your videos. Very professional! (I'm so glad you don't make people suffer through a blaring 10-20 second signature audio clip at the start of your videos. More content creators should follow your lead.) 👍

Another great video, thank you. I'm using cakewalk and find that getting the click track to follow the recording is pretty complex and resulting in too much variation in tempo (that's me admitting to being sloppy with time-keeping). I've compromised and used this to give general indicators then gone for a consistent tempo in sections of the song. Of course this only works when using a demo to find the tempo map for the song.

Little late to the party on this one, but this looks like a very useful feature. Still, it seems a little labor intensive if you're working with a lot of live recordings with a lot of tempo changes. It would be nice if it would do something similar to quantizing. Where it would automatically adjust the grid to the file much in the way quantizing analyzes and adjusts the file to the grid. Then being able to create the tempo track from that. Yes, I understand that's easier said than done.

This process has been pretty challenging/frustrating for me. When I click "assign file tempo," the track is not set up in a way where you are able to snap the first beat of the track to the first beat of the bar in melodyne. The hits line up between beats in the measure and it doesn't let you drag without snapping to the grid. Also, when I do happen to luckily get it to match correctly in melodyne and apply the melodyne tempo as the song tempo, the metronome in studio one does not match at all. It's showing the correct mapped BPMs, but the beats are not in sync with the song and the first hit does not match with the metronome beat. Having said all that, thank you for the video Rich! I'm sure it'll save a lot of time once I'm able to figure it out.

In case it helps anyone else out, here is what I've found after getting some help: in order for the studio one metronome to match your tempo map at the end of the process, you have to make sure the first hit of your percussive track is lined up with grid marker 1 of studio one before you open melodyne on the track. This means erasing anything before the first hit of the track and then dragging the track to marker 1 at the beginning of the timeline. Then, you right click the track and select "bounce to new track" to solidify the changes. Before opening Melodyne, right click the track and change file tempo from 120 to 0 in order to change to "not set," as someone has mentioned above.

Can you please do a tutorial explaining (like I'm 5 years old) how can I find the tempo of a 4 bar audio loop (4/4) I've imported into Melodyne standalone editor? My 4 bar loop shows up as almost 8 bars on the time grid. I can never get the bar and beat markers to line up in sync with my imported audio. I want a constant tempo throughout the loop. Starting at bar 1, ending at bar 5 (or bar 8 since that's what's being detected).

I can't believe I'm the only one that is experiencing zero synergy between S1 and Melodyne. When I assign the file tempo, the metronome in S1 does NOT follow Melodyne. When I turn on the little metronome button in Melodyne like Rich does, literally nothing happens at all. It neither makes the click start nor stop, only the S1 metronome button does that. I can tell by listening to the click and watching the Melodyne markers that the click is way off from what Melodyne has assigned. I can not find any where in Melodyne or S1 to synch these up. Anyone else have this issue? No videos or blogs/posts on this issue either, very frustrating...

This is out of date. There is no "Assign File" option in the drop down menu. Also, turning on the metronome doesn't give a sound independent from the DAW. My window also looks different with no top menu showing 'pulses'. Additionally, there is a red line going through the WAV file on my track that Melodyne created and doesn't go away after closing Melodyne. I have no idea why it's still there. I'm currently in Studio One version 6. Can you kindly update? Thank you! Update: After spending over 2 hours, I cannot get this thing to work. There's something about this program that just seems clunky and DATED. I hope you guys overhaul this. As of now, I cannot see dropping the full asking price. And given Ozone 10's incredible A.I., (among other companies) I don't think it will be long before there is a new kid on the block. All the best. ✌

Thanks for the stringent presentation. However, I wonder how the last 15 seconds of this video work with Cubase (10.5).Simply drag&drop the file onto the tempo track of Studio1 doesn't seem to work in Cubase. I couldn't find any other way than to export it as a midi file and import it back into Cubase. But I always get problems with the time position. The tempo track in Cubase then starts at bar 1, but the file from which I created the tempo starts at bar 5, for example. Without moving all the tracks violently by inserting offset bars, I can't get it right.

Hi Rich. I am just wondering... For the sake of argument, let's say a person successfully created a tempo map for a song, then decided later to extend the song, thus making it longer, essentially just adding additional events to the end of existing tracks. So my question is this. With new "events" being added to the end of a track, can a person just use Melodyne to create an extended tempo track for those new events only, then just drag that new tempo information generated by Melodyne for those new events directly up and paste it on the end of the existing tempo track?

I have several stems just like you do, I edit the drum stem with Melodyne. I assign the file tempo in Melodyne just like in the video. I move the 3rd bar to the downbeat (I used 2nd bar but I don't that shouldn't matter). So far, so good. My results match the video. But when I leave Note Assignment Mode and click on Track Mode, the beginning of the track is now at bar 2 and not the downbeat that I set. Just for grins, I pressed on and copied the drum tempo to the tempo track and sure enough, the offset that I thought I had eliminated was still there. Any ideas about what went wrong?

I noticed in the video when Rich goes from Note Assignment Mode to Track Mode, the Audio in Melodyne shifts, it's not longer aligned to beat 3, but when he copies to the tempo track in Studio One, the Audio in Melodyne shifts back to where it is aligned to beat 3. For my project, the audio also shift in Melodyne off the downbeat, but when I copy my results to the tempo track in Studio One, the audio STAYS misaligned with the downbeat. Something I'm doing in Melodyne isn't making it's way back to Studio One. Not sure if anyone has seen anything like this, or knows what's going on. Please comment if you do.
