Celestion make some great speakers and their 10s fit easily in to this category. Here we explore four of their most popular 10" speakers, the G10 creamback, G10 greenback, G10 vintage and 10" alnico gold.
From the early days of guitar amps, 10 inch speakers have featured heavily in some of our favourite set ups. The Fender Bassman, Marshall 8x10 cabs through to Ampeg, but they can often be overlooked.
When a custom placed an order for one of our favourite 4x10 design cabs, we couldn't help load one of each of these speakers in to the cab and record the, often subtle, differences they make to the sound.
As always let us know what you think, your experience of 10s, if there is anything you would like to see or any recommendations on how we do things better.

Nasality index: Gold 10 Green 7 Cream 2 Vintage 11.314 Gold has some usual alnico magic. Vintage sounds screaming/raunchy out its nose whereas gold is well dressed about it. With an Orange you could attend the royal ball and nobody would notice your face tattoos. Cream is strikingly hifi. No treble loss vs green as in 12” world. Great vid as always guys. You are doing the lord’s work. Even if you don’t use p90s.

Thanks for watching... to be honest I can find 10s a bit nasal sounding sometimes but to me these didn't come across that way in this cab, not to me... and if I were the one playing (Joe is far better so he does the playing) there would be P90s in nearly every video ;)

Hey Guys !! Great side by side demo's of these 10" Celestions ... After watching and listening to many demo's like this , I went ahead and bought a pair of Creamback 10"s and put them into my Custom Vibrolux Reverb Amp that I modified to Vibroverb specs .. Oh man , what an awesome improvement from the Jensen P10R's came stock in that amp .. Great clean tones and overdrive with my early 2000's Deluxe Stratocasters .. feedback tones/harmonic's work great .. tilt the amp back on it's legs looking up at me and I can get awesome crazy sounds without being overly loud in smaller stages / rooms .. Thanx for the great tonal info you provide everyone to make the best choices for their sound they are looking for . !!!!

I agree, the creamback sounds really nice. It comes down to the drive sounds, and the creambacks sound the most balanced. I tried the "deekyspeeky" ir based on your cab and really like it. There's less of that sizzle and nasally sound. The greenbacks are good too and the gold was nice, but they can be really sizzly. Using the "darkprinz4" ir, I'll use a ribbon mic to tame the highs and have it pulled back for a bit less low end. Thanks for making the video, much appreciated.

I bought the gold to get rid of flub on a VOX I use for a practice amp, I have greenbacks in 2 main amp cabs, sound great at volume, (read: not wife friendly.) This was a really nice comparison.👍 It really comes down to the tubes as well -as you know. Depends on the guitar. I’ve been buying guitars since the 70s (read: old guy) so I have all the usual Fenders, Gibson’s, PRS...etc. The last 2 guitars I purchased are Suhr’s and they respond completely differently to an amp than any guitars I’ve run across. Their extremely articulate and “chimey” for lack of a better world. They need a bit more headroom. They like the Golds (thats just my 2 cents -worth).

I have a Celestion gold 10 and 12 as well as a vintage 10. They are all great. My best sounding speaker for classic rock and blues is an old original vintage Jensen p12q. I don't drive it very hard because it's old and I don't want to ruin it. This video makes me want to try the cream backs. I have many Jensen p10r's and p12r's that are the reissues from Italy. They don't quite match the golds but sound pretty good in the right circumstances.

I've been running a Mesa Lonestar Special (fantastic amp) into a single G10 greenback and it is a fantastic speaker. A lot of depth and clarity. Very good and tight bass response and clear, sweet highs. Planning on adding a second 10" for more volume. After listening to this demo I think I'm going to get another greenback. I'm so glad I prefer the sound of Greenback over the alnico $$$!

I’m liking to 10” green myself as I think it may be less flubby than a 12 green in the same volume cab. It will probably cut through the mix better than the cream back which I recently gained interest in. The thing is that the cab design, amp,guitar all work together as to what we can add or dial out. WGS make a big deal about producing a smoother (less upper mids) Greenback and by itself 12” anyhow I do prefer it to a Celestian but then in a live setting that may be a loss.

My speakers today vs. Headphones two months ago. Today: Green instantly sounds REALLY nice with crunchy Strat. Cream clears mids a little more, the opposite of my experience with the 12's which is weird. Vintage is obviously fullest, could get murky mids with wrong amp. Gold is nice, surprisingly louder and in your face, wasn't expecting that. Clean strat they all sound nice except Vintage ten lacks sparkle. Crunchy PRS: Cream and Green are articulate and nice on all frequencies. Gold ramps up the mids and Vintage sounds muddy. Two mo. ago w/ headphones: Clean Strat: Wow. The Creamback is clearly not as loud as the others, that's a surprise. The Vintage 10 is clearly the loudest. Green is my fave. Rock Lead: The Green has a nice glow the Cream doesn't have. Cream is a touch muddy and unexcited. The very expensive Gold sound virtually identical to the Green. Vintage sounds Great, Green barely edges it out on the lead with nicer highs and upper mids. WINNER: Greenback. They heard different things than me. I really thought the Cream was dull, the Green and Vintage the most lively. Gold, very good but lacks sparkle and way overpriced. Green just a tiny bit more sparkle and life than Vintage, but vintage was loudest and stronger in 800 to 1k area.

I liked the greenback best, they just have a sweeter sound than the other speakers. I honestly believe that guitar speakers lose a bit of mojo when you try to up their power handling, repeated listening tests also hold up this opinion, for me. When you go from a 1 inch to a larger voice coil, the entire sound signature of the speaket changes, I always tend to prefer the sweeter, "crang", that comes from low power speakers to the thicker ," bring", sound that higher powered soeakers make.

One really must try 2x10 and 4x10. 10's seem faster than 12's to me. 12 might be more satisfying when playing solo but 10 cuts through the mix on stage. I personally preferred two amps. I saw that you preferred the Alnico Gold 10 to the 12 inch. Still feel the same way? Intention is using this for home use with a PRS MT15. Have a Vintage 12 for small gigs but I feel the 10 would be better for home. I actually preferred the Alnico Cream tone but that only comes in 12 inch.

Does the lower wattage of the Greenback (30 watt while the Creamback is 45 watt) mean that it sounds better/fuller on low volume since it's working more? I am thinking of replacing the speaker of my Vox Mini Superbeetle which I already really enjoy at low volumes.

I'd encourage anyone looking for an American Fender sound, especially on crossover types like the Bassman, to look at the vintage style Eminence 1028 & 1058, and Jensen P10R -F. I think we get use to that huge booming warm low end , that sacrifices much of the actual harmonics , cleaner grit, and cut originally intended. The ten's are def the thing,can be shocking in comparison , and you might even find utility with down tuning/ baritone, where otherwise you are getting lost in the mix. If you're hung up on 12's, you might be better off looking at 15's.Both really require volume to function properly. Sometimes that which is immediately appealing in bedroom practice dosen't work in rehearsal or live context.Take the speaker and cab choice as seriously as the amp and pickups.

The G10 vintage has a 30 Oz magnet which is the same Size as the magnets used for G12M speakers which is probably why it sounds closest to a 12 inch speaker .

ooh I didn;t know that, I'm going to look in to that when Im in the workshop. I'll be honest if you asked me from my memory I'd say the magnet was smaller but that may just be my mind assuming that because it is a 10" speaker. Massive thanks for pointing that out, everydays a school day ;)

Easy to hear why the greenbacks are so popular. Not as crazy about the gold as I thought I would be. Got a Super that sounds great with the original 50 year old speakers, but have wondered a lot about could it sound better by changing up a couple of the speakers in it? I don't play high gain, mostly edge-of-breakup with pedal overdrive for leads and sustain. Thinking creamback, but experimentation can get expensive quick.

Well I agree totally that 10" versions do not sound same as their 12" counterparts. Not even considering the size difference. Actually I find that to me modern 10" Greenbacks are closer to the Pulsonic cone Pre Rola 12" Greenbacks then their original parts were. Old 10" Greenbacks are not my thing at all while this once sound very good especially with some gain on. I also do not fancy original 12" G12S Greenbacks While I do like M and H versions. This Greenback sounds very rounded and balanced. I find that Creamback sounds more like Creamback H in 12" version. 12" Cremback M model is to dark for me. I prefer Creamback H while it sounds more balanced and in more in the control and even more musical to me. 10" Gold Alnico sounds very good to me. At first glans it is similar to the other two but if you listen closely it has more texture and details. Less attack then 12" version and more rounded. Very nice sounding speaker indeed. Vintage 10" is very specific. Personally I would not use ti for the clean tones but is usable for the overdriven sounds. I think in 10" version it is a perfect speaker to mix in. I imagine it would mix good with any other of those and my favorite would be mix with a Greenback or Gold Alnico. Or even one of them and 3 of the others. If I was doing this box, with mix of them all, I would have swapped positions of the Alnico Gold and the Creamback. I think this is a valid mix how ever it might sound strange at the beginning. Another great video.

@ZillaCabs
@ZillaCabs 3 жыл бұрын
That's a good question, it isn't that they wouldn't work but 10s can be a little limited as you push the gain levels up they tend to lack a bit of that umph... this is partly down to physical restraints on the size of the speaker but also partly down to manufacturers aiming 10s at more of the tradition blues/rocky side of things. There are no rights or wrongs with this stuff though, and if you can pull it off then there will be a real advantage have that bit more space in the sound in a band situation.

I'm kinda screwed, because I have a 4x10" combo and honestly the heavier speakers sound nicer, as much as I try to ignore it. Why it matter is that it could make a difference of roughly 5 kilos. Not that the thing will move around a lot, but when it needs to, I could do without that extra weight. - Also, the heavier ones are more expensive as well, so do that times four and it's a lot extra as well. - Then again, I'm thinking perhaps I could just make it a 2x10"... I really like the spread of the sound across four speakers, but... I don't know, it's an open-back anyway, and the two empty spots could act like ports in a way. XD - I'm not sure what to do... I can't exactly just buy like 6-8 speakers and experiment... Perhaps I could, but that's a lot of work, plus some would definitely need to be sent back. - Screw it, I think I should just go with two G10 Vintages and hook it up somehow. It would be 120 Watts to a 100W SS amp and also 4,8Kgs instead of 6.4Kgs (with 4 lighter ones). Also less than half the cost, I believe.
