Since people asked for this, I made a 'guitar only' version of my last Celestion speaker comparison.
Here's the comparison: • Celestion high gain co...
No highpass, lowpass or any EQ. This is what's coming from the microphone.
(Only masterbus was still on, so it doesn't clip)

Great video. The only one that sounds uniquely different with that level of gain is the G12T-75, which is why I suppose my Marshall cabinet has those speakers. The best for metal. Great riff and great playing!!

Interesting. All the speakers except the G12T-75 12 sound deeper. The G12T-75 12 has this real crisp, seething overdrive. I like all of them but I think this one really rocks. Thanks for posting this. Jeff

The mids are way too scooped. Would be fine if you're playing by yourself, but in an actual band setting you will have a hard time cutting through. I think it's one of the reasons why a lot of people will swap out two of them for V30's in a 4x12 cab.

Thanks, I can hear my G12T-75s are good speakers from this video and J M's very handy time markers he put below. Might remove them from an old Crate G250 for other applications, and either sell the crate of just use it for a clean reference amp or bass head, etc., it has a really good clean solid state tone, unusual. An often overlooked Celestion speaker that really has a huge, fat bottom end is the higher wattage G12T-100. Their bass response is just amazing and they are decent priced at a penny shy of $100 right now.

Looking at the label on the V30, looks like it's a Mesa V30. Different then a straight up V30. The Mesa V30's are a bit smoother with more low mid shift. The Mesa30 and the Lynchback are a good mix by the way.

IMO T75 for rock 60' 70' and V30 or G12H30 for hard and modern rock. It depends on amps, guitar and fingers too.

Thanks a lot for this. To my ears the Lynchback and G12H30 share the same sort of "texture" in their sounds. Lynchback just the darker version. Creamback old school "wooly" with not as much presence in the mids. V30 is boring but got mids. G12T75, not much mids but upper mids and treble. Soundwise, I would choose G12H30 in a 4X12, Lynchback in a 2X12 and Creamback in a 1X12.

Surprised the Lynchbacks and the V30’s sounded so similar to me in this recording. Still prefer the Greenback, not even close. There’s a punch to it you can hear even in this and when you’re playing at band volumes and it growls at you... very nice.

If there is bass and a mix, i would match the g12M creamback with this v30. Similar mids but complementary. Lynchback is a better version of the g12t-75, totally doable. Imho the 75 is too fizzy and scooped for this amp - in the mix it would get high passed, mid bumped, and prob end up with too much sizzle in the steak.
@StandTallTx
@StandTallTx 2 жыл бұрын
Even for metal, I think the G12T is a poor choice on its own. The mids are just so scooped and lack any sort of definition. It really needs a different type of speaker to compliment it. The cream back is the real winner to me. Sounds good on its own or with other speakers for different genres.

THIS is the way comparisons should be done, people! Not a 3 minute song on one speaker or pedal and then by the time the next one starts you forgot the first. And no talking! If this was an Anderton's video, it would have taken 45 minutes the way those baked goofs blather on.

Ahhh, the 5150II..."Able to shave hair follicles off ears at 50 paces..." The amp used in any speaker shootout is important, and the 5150II is one bright ass amp, I had one, and pairing it with my 1960A stock loaded with it's G12 t75's was not good, as evident in this shootout. Now I use a JCM2000 and I'm much happier. Nothing wrong with the 5150II, it's agreat amp, like I said, I had one for many years, but it was a sort of one trick pony, and the pots started to crackle after only 5 years or so :( Lynch back's are good, I like the Creams and the G12 H, and of course the V30's...then again, everythign will soudn better than the 5150II through the stock G12 T75's. Get a armer amp and then the other seakers will sound too dark. Bottom line: Different speakers for different amps. Do the same shootout with a JCM 2000 DSL/TSL and let's see what happens. ;)
@ThevonMusic
@ThevonMusic 9 жыл бұрын
I used to have a JCM 2000 head, sounds a bit too harsh for me, but I'm not really into Marshall amps anyway. Actually it's a 5150 III (the ones made by Fender), not a 5150 II. Not to be rude, but I've played those T75 equipped 1960A cabs in a band and I totally don't like those cabs. Did you ever try your 5150 II over another cabinet? Depends on what sound you're after ofcourse but I'm definitely not a fan of those Marshall cabs, especially if you want a modern high gain tone. Maybe you're more into crunchy tones, so that's a different story.
@tinolombajr.8864
@tinolombajr.8864 9 жыл бұрын
No, never tried it with anything else. The JCM did it for me, but i'm conservative with the gain, i use the crunch and lead channels on 4-5, set all the tones to max, and actually mod the sound by just changing gain and presence, which I keep about 60-70%. Same with the 5150II...I used to keep gain around 3-4 in the lead channel, but at the time, I was using a Charvel Jackson w DiMarzi ToneZone, which is a high output, fat bottom pickup, one of the best replacement pickups ever, IMHO. I don't think the preamp tone does anythign good for changing the sound...if you set any tone (low, mid, high) to less than full, that aspect seems lacking, so I always jsut set tones to full....the actual 'tone' comes from the circuitry...trying to change the tone with some pots is going against the 'nature' of how the circuit actually sounds...once again IMHO. Can't afford it now, but i have 2 1960A's atm, both stock w T75's, and when I can, I will prolly upgrade one to have V30's in it, or maybe a set of Lynchbacks. I still have my 5150 combo, but it's been modded, and the harmonics it puts out is insane...the stock Scheffields are some of the worst speakers ever, and when I run it thru one of the 1960'sm, the harmonic content is dazzling...takes a little getting used to, but it is glorious in it's own way. It has had about 30% of the parts inside replaced, and the tubes are NOS JAN Philips 6L6's and the preamp has a NOS Mullard in V1, and premium selected 12AX7's for the rest...it's not an ordinary 5150 combo, lol,
@tinolombajr.8864
@tinolombajr.8864 9 жыл бұрын
btw, on the 5150 II, (and the modded 5150 combo I still have) I actually prefer the 'Rhythm' Channel distortion sound to the Lead channel, it was far beefier, crunchier and *musical* than the Lead channel, which when I did use, I kept at around 3-4 gain, Res maxed, and Presence around 7-8. My Current axe is a solid mahogany, set neck ESP with EMG active pickups, btw.
@ThevonMusic
@ThevonMusic 9 жыл бұрын
I never tried other speakers in the 1960 cabs, because they were not my own cabs, but you could also put lynchbacks + v30's in an x pattern in there, so if you want to use your cab for recording purposes you can choose between two different speakers. The 1960's equipped with T75's were always very earpiercing/too harsh sounding imo. Sounds like a lovely guitar you have there. I don't own an ESP, only LTD's so far, but would definitely consider getting an ESP in the future.
@tinolombajr.8864

Yep, the head and speakers work together. A lot of the fizz in today's sound is from so much preamp gain. In the 70's, "heavy metal' like Zep and Deep Purple are actually sooo 'clean' compared to today. Back then, the heads were cranked and the distortion was from the power tubes and speakers strained out. In order to emulate that blasted sound, MArshall came up with the 'Master Volume' scheme, as almost all amps are now; there's a pre-amp gain, and a power amp (volume), and players get addicted to that high gain, bc it hides so much slop, but that fizz gets annoying. Playing a clean amp, like a Fender Blues Jr maxed out exposes all the skips and misses in my playing, but the sound is such a natural distortion without that metallic fizz.

Creamback. I have the G12T-75 and it's pretty much an unused one-trick pony, maybe better with something else. I've found various versions of V30's to be great in different cabs, most recently a Neo Century open back.

They all sounded similar with slightly less/more low end barring the G12T-75 which had too much high end sizzle for my liking. The Lynch and V-30 had same lows and top just voiced a little different in the mid punch but had a lovely smooth pleasing to the ears sound. Line6 speakers sound poo!

Having owned both, the v30s have an uncontrollable high end attack that borders on nagging old lady type of frequencies. I literally had to turn the treble down on the amp (which kills your tone) to battle that, but with the g12t-75, I find the highs more balanced but with less mids (which gives you an opportunity to boost the mids on your head EQ) for drop tuning or low gain blues, the v30s sound great, but I've gotton equally good tones from the t-75s without having to turn my EQ knobs way counterclockwise

Just wondering, (and although I've been playing for decades, I'm kind of a speaker virgin--so please be gentle.) could you use four out of the five in a 4x12? Or, would it be not do-able in a to over-the-top low-midrange kind of way? Or maybe wattage and/or frequency clashes? Idk, I'm new to the speaker swapping game. Great demo though, it actually separates the individual tones one needs to be able to hear and would use in this genre and similar high volume applications. I am definitely looking to push some air though my 100 watt DSL. Thoughts and opinions please??
@ThevonMusic
@ThevonMusic 9 жыл бұрын
jimmiemclovin You mean 4 different speakers in a 4x12? As long as they share the same ohmage there's no problem. Another thing to keep in mind is the difference in volume between different speakers, so they won't be equally as loud when you play over the cabinet. I suggest you look into X pattern setups. I actually mounted 4 different speakers in my framus cab, just for fun, and it sounds great :-)
@jimmiemclovin
@jimmiemclovin 9 жыл бұрын
TecksMusic Thanks for the response. Initially I wanted to run (X pattern) two V-30’s-to cover the mid-range, with two G12H-30’s--as my friend has one in his Egnater cab and that particular speaker really has a tight, but huge low end response. What are your thoughts on that combination? Then I got to thinking if the ohms matched like you were saying, maybe two V-30’s, with one G12H-30, And, one G12T-75 because I’ve heard (but haven’t substantiated) that they have a well defined (but not thin) high end and equally clear wide lows. Thoughts? Or hell, maybe a Celestion blue or gold ($$$ or not)…maybe a different Celestion?? Idk. What do you think if any might work with a 100watt DSL playing loud stoner/doom? Thanks again and great playing btw! Oh, and are you still using your set-up with the four different 12”’s in your cab? And which combination did you use? And which ones were louder than the others? I know lots of questions…but hey, that’s why you posted your results with this vid right? Don't think it's not appreciated!
@ThevonMusic
@ThevonMusic 9 жыл бұрын
Are you using a Marshall cab? It's hard to say what you will like, but I would personally add two Lynchback or Creamback M-65 speakers. The huge low end of your friend might just be his cabinet. Fucking hate the G12T-75 and the Vintage 30. Creamback and Lynchback sounded the best in this demo

Funny the Creamback and the V30 sound almost identical also the Lynchback was very close to the V30 in low end response.
