A high gain metal Celestion guitar speakers comparison/shootout of the 8 different Celestion speakers I own.
Microphone: Shure SM57
Amp: EVH 5150 III (red channel)
Cabinet: own made 1x12
0:00 Celestion V-Type
0:27 Celestion G12T-75
0:50 Celestion G12M-65 Creamback
1:12 Celestion A-Type
1:34 Celestion G12-50GL Lynchback
1:57 Celestion Vintage 30
2:19 Celestion G12H-30 Anniversary
2:42 Celestion G12H-75 Creamback
3:06 Celestion V-Type (solo)
3:26 Celestion G12T-75 (solo)
3:48 Celestion G12M-65 Creamback (solo)
4:12 Celestion A-Type (solo)
4:35 Celestion G12-50GL Lynchback (solo)
4:57 Celestion Vintage 30 (solo)
5:20 Celestion G12H-30 Anniversary (solo)
5:43 Celestion G12H-75 Creamback (solo)
The first in the mix sound comparison has a low pass and high pass filter on guitar tracks. The comparison you hear after that doesn't have anything else involved. It's the dry tone coming out of the microphone.

The Lynchback sounded the best to me in this test. I like speakers that not only cut through the mix, but cut through with authority, and that's why I liked the Lynchback. It has muscle and thickness to lend authority to the guitar tone, but at the same time it has a complex harmonically rich mid-range that not only cuts through the ix better than the Vintage 30 but also lends a nice clarity to the notes.

Excellent job - this is how all comparisons should be done. Maybe mention the mic set-up or other little details, but other than that, excellent demonstration. Kinda goes to show that the preferred sound will always be subjective, especially if the music is well performed.

This is super a helpful demonstration! If only this had been made a couple of years later to include Redbacks :) I'm currently in the market for a cab and I've debating between one with Vintage 30's vs. one with Redbacks, but I don't really have a great comparison (such as this one) for Redbacks directly up against other speakers. They've just been highly recommended to me by a guitarist/producer buddy of mine.

Great comparison. I like the way you did in a mix and on its on. That way we can hear how it sounds in all situations. Also using a short but dynamic riff was perfect. Allows us to actually hear the properties of the speaker. I hate when some people just shred to show their chops. That does nothing for a comparison. A+ video. Thank you for taking the time. Still don't know which my favorite is. The only one I didn't like was the A Type.
@ThevonMusic
@ThevonMusic 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, the A type is a totally different speaker than most regular speakers. Not a fan either, but it can sound good for clean guitar tones. It just misses a lot of treble. Thanks for your comment, I'm glad you like this comparison!

@@jaycee30865 T75s are 3 dbs lower than V30s and both H speakers. "Although an increase of 3 dB represents a doubling of the sound pressure, an increase of about 10 dB is required before the sound subjectively appears to be twice as loud. The smallest change we can hear is about 3 dB." Pulled straight from google and I get what they mean. It is definitely possible to hear a difference at 1 or 2 dbs difference but 3 is when it kind of jumps out. That being said, a V30 is not twice as loud.

More dynamic speaker all around. People think they love British mids until they hear a more modern version of a British speaker that dials back the mids a bit and adds some punch to everything else. The G12H has a British foundation with some American sensibilities. Perfect.

Keep seeing the G12T-75 show up, and it keeps sounding good. My Rectoverb 25 is a bit mid-strong for me and I’d rather not add an EQ pedal to my already crowded pedal board. The Verb comes with a UK V30. The V-Types are actually pretty good speakers.

thanks for such a hi-fi, clear sounding video. also, you did a great job dialing in a killer distortion sound. it sounds good regardless of each speaker's own signature stamp. I'm still deciding on which speaker I liked best. although I can say that i myself own a 4x12 of GT12-75's, and in this video, they sound amongst the weakest of the other speakers here, to my ear. the other speakers have made me more aware of a high-mid fizz that is present in the character of the G12T-75, that I would rather not have present. here goes more GAS. lol

after having hours upon hours put in with my marshall DSL through an EVH 2x12 with the G12H30's and having become somewhat tired of what I percieve anyway as an overly fizzy character and unrefined low end, this is very much helping me make up my mind for the replacements and I am leaning towards either the V types or the creamback 75s
@ThevonMusic

I think you'll dig the Creamback's the most if you want nice treble. Actually the best treble that I've experienced comes from the Celestion Cream, but unfortunately I don't have one anymore, so it didn't end up in the video. It's an alnico speaker so quite expensive, but has such a nice fizz to it without being harsh. I think this speaker is mostly used for cleans, but damn... it sounded super awesome with high gain too, especially in the room.
@metalinsights9664
@metalinsights9664 Жыл бұрын
The DSLs are quite scooped. I recommend running mids on 10, treble no more than 4, preferably 3, presence wide open on 10, bass and resonance around 5. That will get it into useable territory, regardless of the speaker used.

I have a dsl40cr that came with the V-Type and it's really fizzy and lacks bottom end...it sounds thin and brittle...not so bad for blues and country...terrible for metal though. I use an extension cab loaded with a Vintage 30 8ohm for high gain and it fixes the fizz issue and has tons of bottom end...it thumps and has searing creamy leads...so much better than the v-type for that application.

What cab and mic were these in, also what amp were you using?

Hey, fantastic demo.. got a cab with a v-type influenced by your demo, using it presently with a EVH lbx, and kind of disappointed - thin and harsh, all I can say... how long did it take to break yours in? any method you can recommend?

I have a pair of the V-type, came stock in a new Marshall V212 cab. I'm having the same dissatisfaction right now. They only have about 20 or so hours playing time so far. They have a nasty, fizzy attack when overdriven at volume. It's rather prominent, particularly with single notes. Have your's sounded better after more playing time and being properly broken in?

Yep. Good ears man. The V30 doesn't have any of that nasty ear killing 2k jingle bells from hell. Who cares about 'beefy'. It's those higher frequencies you want to get rid of. That's where the real warmth comes from !

Chief Thundrecock Yep! The Vintage 30 is the worst speaker Celestion ever made. Even the Rocket 50 sounds better than the V30.

@Chief Thundrecock - Well, actually it depends on what type of rig you're running into the speaker(s). Your signal chain is going to determine what's coming out of it more than anything else. That said, you must be using a lot of digital stuff.

@@TheAxe4Ever a speaker like the v30 slays in taming the woofiness of something like a dual rectifier and bringing out its mids amongst all the low end, where they can get harsh with somethings thats crunchier like a 5150 which is too much high end paired with v30s.

borutos dad I guess that’s why I hated them so much. I got my first Peavey 5150 head (Block letter) when they first came out. I was playing it through a Marshall cab with V30’s and hated it. I had been through a few cabinets through the years and they all came loaded with V30’s for some reason. Probably because they were a popular speaker and I really wanted to try to like them. Recently I went with the EVH 5150 III and the same thing. V30’s were awful with that too. Finally broke down and bought the matching cab with the EVH G12. They are actually the G12M Heritage speakers with the EVH badge on the back. MUCH better. So yeah, you are correct. Depends on the amp they’re paired with.

I think a pairing of 2 Creamback 75's with 2 V30's in a 4x12 would sound excellent, maybe switch one of the 4 speakers for a Creamback 65 for some extra low end

Other than the V30s (the standard for this style) my favorites are the G12T-75 and the M-65 Creamback. Which would you recommend putting in closed back 2x12 to pair with a V30?
