Celestion G12t-75 Vs greenback is not a well known mix, but still a great combination.
The Celestion G12t-75 (T75) is more commonly known as the stock Marshall 4x12 speaker since the mid 80s. It can get a bad wrap, but we don't think it deserves that. The Celestion Greenback is known by nearly all guitar players, it was one of the most popular speakers from the 60s through to the late 70s and even today remains a solid choice for a lot of guitar players
To do this we recorded both speakers in an identical 1x12 setup, same mics, mic placements, amps and settings by re-amping the same scenario through several different styles.
We love to hear your thoughts on anything speaker related, if you've used this pair before or the individual speakers, or if you have any suggestions please get in touch.

Well right off the bat I like the way you play a quick clip of one speaker then the other. All too often these comparison vids have clips that are way too long. By the time you get to the next example you can't remember what the first sounded like. Well done.

Thanks I'm glad you like it.... to be honest there is some merit in having longer clips, sometimes the timing of cuts has to be in certain places to sound right but I think there is merit in both.... that said I like 2 or 4 bars, and then maybe some longer sections later on. Thanks again for watching.

The T75s were not filtering out that sizzle and fizz as well as the greenbacks were once the overdrive began. It reminded me of the tone of my IR-X if I forget to turn the IRs back on. I'd be interested to know if T75s from the 1980s do that too. Most bands used them on stage back then and I remember those bands sounding very good. Yngwie used them too. His lead tone on the Rising Force album is so, so good. I have a 1960a quad from about 1990 or so. The T75s have a black back with a white stripe through them. I had not seen those ones before. They definitely chugged better than my H30 loaded 2x12 when my nephew played his nu-metal stuff. I noticed a nasty frequency when he played lead with high gain though. The H30s were nicer for that.

They sound fairly similar on the clean and lightly driven tones, but I don't like that fizziness that's apparent from the G12t-75 on the more driven tones. You can can see the narrow spike in the highs on the frequency graph. Not for me, although I suppose it would work in a mix for certain styles of music. The Greenback is a classic sound, smooth but with plenty of crunch too, certainly my preference.

However I usually tend to prefer greenbacks, the 75 sounds surprisingly good to me. There is some fizz, but doesn't hurt my ears and I think I actually prefer it to a V30 😄 The mixed pair has incredible bark and bite to kick some ass and cut through the mix, while not being ice-picky and retaining enough body to the sound. The T75 opens up in the mids, where the Greenback is very glued in that region. There’s a reason greenbacks are so nice with classic amps with that open character. it all gets glued together with that sweet gooey goodness. But with modern amps, they tend to be way more compressed so they need something to let them breath a little. I find amps like Diezels just do better with T75s so you get a little of that klankiness that is just so damn fun to play

@@Matte.u.k it’s kind of the other way around. T75s have a certain hollowness to them due to the way they’re scooped. Greenbacks are more full in the low mids, but also have a high-mid spike. It’s presents as more even. With 75s, it’s like the speaker emulates what your guitar would sound like once it’s mastered in a mix. It sheds off some of the low-mid “puff”, it’s got more air and presence and the lows are set deeper.

If you want a chewy texture with speaker breakup at lower volume you want the greenback. With the greenback you give up some clarity and tightness at higher volume due to midrange forward tone and breakup. T75 will hold up better at higher volume and be tighter and more articulate. Not sure what's going on in this recording, however my G12 T' 75w speakers sound nothing like this recording. This sound clip makes the G12T very trebly which I don't have in mine. I always roll off my treble on my amp anyway and Im very happy using a 30w Orange Rockerverb amp head..
@ZillaCabs
@ZillaCabs 5 ай бұрын
It's an A?B test from a series of comparisons, so eq on the amp is set to the same. The video needs to be seen/heard in the context of an A/B series of videos. In practise its not how we would use our gear but it shows like for like in a given setup, with no bias what the speaker is doing in comparrison to another.

I love the G12t-75's in my Marshall 1960a 4x12, however in this demo they do sound a bit fizzy. Maybe I have that EQ'd out? I have been thinking about maybe replacing two of the G12t-75's with G12m-65's (Creamback). I think the combination would be good. I assume I would put one on top and one below, diagonally? I would imagine I could two 25 watt Greenbacks instead of the G12h-75's and that would still give me 200 watts. And the Greenback 25 would break up earlier. Bogner mixes a V30 and Creamback in their OS 2x12 cabs and that sounds really good. Has anyone else tried this (or similar) combo in a 4 x 12? Results?

I have a 1960A too and I love it as well. Have you seen Ola's review on the Marshall DSL20H? He uses a 1960TV cab with greenbacks. At 5:30 he mentions the lack of pumping low end. That's when the "AH HA!" moment came, so I'll be replacing to two top speakers with greenbacks.

Yeah I get that, it is one of my favourites, but do you think it wins because it is a good speaker or because you don't like the T75?................... I have to admit if you made me chose I'd go for the greenback nearly every time too.

@@ZillaCabs Greenback sounds more “all-around” speaker for any genre... I have both greenies (reissues and 55hz) and the T75, the greenie (reissue) has that snarl that I really love especially on a Plexi-style circuit I have...the T75 is better fit for higher gain amp for mid-scooped sound and tighter bottom end.....

Over the years players complained that the T75 was too thin and bright with its scooped mids. A lot of those guys automatically use a V shaped EQ with hardly any mids. On a Marshall voiced amp the trick is to dime the mids and roll off the bass a bit. Viola!

Top comment mate! It's often a case of needing to pay more attention to the eq and think about pushing the boundaries in a different way that works best for the gear being used.

I think the g12t-75 got a bad reputation once they got paired with later era "brighter sounding" marshalls which accentuated the already more piercing highs that these speakers had when compared to something like a vintage 30 or greenback.

Greenbacks= lots of "body" and ~120hz growl. Raw and honey-like! Slower attack T75s=deeper-set lows, accentuates pick-to-string action (love this!). An almost 40 year old speaker STILL sounds modern as hell. Faster transient. Both are super fun to play and one is NOT better than the other, with exception to application. T75s clean and firm up "body" frequencies a bit, making it the better choice for stuff like Boogies, Diezels, and Bogners inherently have that syrupy character and are very compressed and full. You can Greenback a Friedman all day though, since they aren't so compressed.

Not fair comparison , the 75 should be up 50% higher then the tops would become thinner as the cone starts to buckle and push more bass through , then its sounds similar but still more brittle than the 25 , a broken in 75 sounds way different , to this raspy cardboard thing
@ZillaCabs
@ZillaCabs 4 ай бұрын
sure, all broken in speakers sound different (as it goes these aren't straight out of the box). Any speaker comparison isn't a fair test, no one would play a speaker like this in real life. As it goes, when we do videos with talking so we can put context in we get slammed for it, which is why we haven't bothered putting any videos up for three years.

They haven't been made in the UK for almost twenty years so the UK made T75s have had twenty years + to break in. There is also as much variation in UK made T75s as there is in most UK T75s against a new T75. There also aren't too many people have compared them in the exact same situation, and the its clear they aren't totally different.

I;ve recorded dozens and there is a difference, but there is as much difference within the UK T75s and there is between a twenty year old T75 and a new speaker. You are not comparing like with like.
