Celestion Vintage 30 and Greenback Speakers in 2x12 and 4x12 Cabinet

I changed the speakers in my 2x12 Palmer cabinet from Celestion V30s to Greenbacks and recorded the most common possible combinations. The V30s went into a Marshall 1960AX 4x12 cabinet, to get the combination of Greenbacks and V30s like in the Friedman 4x12 cabs. Those greenies really bring out the "Brittish"tone ...they really bite the mids ..But I would have to say that the 212 v30s had an amazing tone ..obviously more headroom ..I like that for a 212 it has a little more bottom end but still really tightly defined..I have a baltic 412 with v30s and its a tone monster...great playing dude!!nice comparison!!

Vintage 30s always sound thin and spiky to me with a clean amp. Then you drive it and it is the tightest and clearest speaker there is.

Sht this greenback speakers with overdrive sounds crazy! I have 2*12 palmer closed back cab with v30+ G12H-30. I really dont understand how closed back cabs should sound because the sound is focused in very front of the cab, even if you are standing ( not sitting) in front of the cab it cuts high and mid frequencies. Recording with mic it does not matter but it is quite weird sounding when you walking arond, slightly better when you play on clean or overdrive and terrible on highgain. First thing I did, I put cab around 40-50cm higher it helped little bit, but still sounded muddy when standing not in front. So finaly I put it vertically first with v30 up, then othervise..and finaly it sounds how in my oppinion it shoul sound! G12H-30 nicely cuts in space you can walk around an sound is still bright on highgain! It is a bit more bass than I want and sound not much compressed but much better than in horizontal position. It is kind a feeling when you play in front of 4*12. Maybe Andreas or anybody did any cuts in closed cab back and did it helped to prevent blanket effect? I would like to build custom 2*12 vertical cab with changhing open/semi-open/closed back options. =D

How did the V30/Greenback mix sound in the room? The V30 didn't dominate the Greenback? For a 212 would you prefer V30/G12M, or 2xG12M?

I just did the same test myself I’m in my studio, greenbacks distort a bit more, 30s are better for clean, BTW, great demo

They definitely sound different! Most of the time I use the 4x12 cab because on small stages you can put it on a beer crate and you can hear yourself pretty good, not the case with a 2x12 cab.

this is the way on how to make an idea about a cabinet - not through a mix..with a microphone..but with a good room mic...I wish people would learn that - use headphones and you will be able to better tell the difference...

Hey there, I'd like to know what volume do you usually use the 100w head with the greenback 2x12? I'm thinking of running a 100w marshall head into a 50w rating 2x12 greenback cab. Heard it may blow up the speakers if the head's wattage is higher than that of the cab's....

I now use a 2x12 with Creambacks (65W each), my top has a PPIMV installed, without that I wouldn't use it with the 25W Greenbacks.

If the Greenback and the v30 were in the same cabinet, would a V 30 really overpower the Greenback? I know the v 30 is more efficient, thinking about trying it.

I don't think that the Greenback would be overpowered by the V30 because that Greenies have a very prominent sound.

my idea of a perfect 4x12 is v30 and greenbacks. did you put them v30 one side top and bottom and greens on the other side? that way if a stereo cabinet, you can have both or either.

No, the Greenbacks are in the top row and V30s at the bottom to get them balanced, volumewise. The box is mono so the stereosplit is not an option ...

I have a 212 cab right now that I have a celestion v30 and a wgs veteran speaker in it and it sounds pretty good but I'm thinking of mixing it up with a vintage 30 celestion and a greenback, so I'm going to see what that sounds like and if it's to my liking I'll probably go that route. But then again it all depends on what you are driving the speakers with and how the cab is constructed is it sealed, open back, ported - So many factors go into this and what it all comes down to is this, if you like the way it sounds, then go with it, that's what I've always relied on.

What pedals are you using on your pedal board ? Great tone . I own a YJM . Found the greenback more ‘marshall’ especially for the high gain sounds . Liked the vintage 30s as well but definately brighter and abit much with the boost engaged

Thanks :) The clean sound is pure YJM the drive sound is an Xotic RC Boost (best boost pedal ever) and the solo sound is an Maxon OD-808. The V30s are very "agressive" sounding in real live, the greenbacks indeed sound more marshally.

Hi Joao, it's a vintage style cab so you can only use all 4 speakers, but when you get the modern version with the stereopanel it should be possible to wire it like you sayd.

It worked good with the two combined, but I'm using the Greenbacks most of the time! (in the room the V30s are at the edge of being a little harsh). Now I got 2x12 with Creambacks, great sounding alternative!

In my 4x12 cabinets the chinese greenbacks sound less "harsh" but the cabinet with the british Greenbacks is a 1960B perhaps that's a different sound, but I'm to lazy to change the speakers in the two cabinets to try out :D

Hi , i might try this as I have 1960a and b. Theres a youtube video of a guy comparing the same speakers and these 2 cabs. China, the Greenbacks are China too. The China Greenbacks sound better then the Made in England ones (have some english ones in another 4x12 cab), but for the V30s I think it's the other way round, the Made in England V30s sound way better ...

You should try out the G12K-100s I'm currently running them in a 2x12 and the sound is huge and somehow it's louder than all of my friends 4x12 cabs, but they probably have crap speakers in them haha!

Well dang, thanks for talking this 63 year young guy into keeping his1968 4x12 cab(s). Ive had the same 100W Super Lead (its a 1970) since I was 17.....that 46 years ago!! Bonus, I paid $500 for both cabs and head in 75. The head is now sitting in Ben Fargens shop getting the first filter cap job and some lovin' on.

Nice playing! Just got a V30 and been doing the same comparison myself with Greenback & Blue. The V30 def has a place as do all other speakers. The greenback is prob by far best all rounder if you need to cover all styles, in my humble opinion!

@@AndreasDiehlmann That's a personal opinion. I love my English Greenbacks while I despised my English V30s. The Chinese Greenbacks sounded too thin while the Chinese V30s were not as fizzy as the English ones. Currently I have two English Greenbacks and two Chinese V30s.
