I wanted to upgrade my 70mm Travel scope to get better views of Saturn and Jupiter, I I purchased the Celestron 127EQ. So, is this one good enough, or will I be upgrading again? Short answer: I'll probably get another one...

Agree. I've been using this telescope for months now and I'm amazed by the views it shows. Proper collimation is key! I have had good views of Mars with it. But yes, you would have to supply it with better eyepieces (I recommend zoom lenses) and a more decent barlow lens to optimize the capabilities of this telescope. Not recommended for those who are impatient with collimation.

As Smitty Smith said its a Bird Jones. Its a short telescope with a long focal length. It uses some sort of lens in the focuser tube to correct the focal length for a short tube. It has been said that the image this scope produces are bad due to this added lens.I don't personally have one so don't know if that is true however, if you are having issues focusing the scope that might be the reason.

Thank you so much for your review. I feel that this would be a fantastic telescope to own, but my fear is that a person would have to be an intermediate to an advanced telescope user to really get the most out of it. I might know a lot about astronomy and astrophysics from books and articles and such, but I am still a telescope newbie, and my only experience was with a small 60mm Tasco refractor in my teens and twenties. I've been wanting to get into stargazing again, but figuring out things such as right ascension and declination etc to use with the equatorial mount can be quite tricky for novices, so I might just get a bit bigger (90mm) alt-azimuth mount refractor this time around in order not to overwhelm myself. I recall pulling my hair out with the Tasco as a teen, because the 60mm lens was severely limiting the amount of light coming in, and, in the end, I had to buy 3rd party eyepieces of lower magnification than what came with the telescope to have good viewing experiences. And this was all during the dawn of the world wide web, so finding this information wasn't exactly easy.

The secondary mirror (and the assembly around it) segments my view into 4 as the assembly is right in the middle of the opening and it looks like crosshairs. Any idea on how to make it so I don’t see that?
@FordRasmussen3 жыл бұрын
As far as I know that happens when you're not focused right. If you can't get rid of it with the eyepiece focuser then you probably need to realign the mirrors (collimation). The instruction manual shows that process.

Hi there!!! Have you had more practice with the 127 now? Do you have a different opinion about the 70 vs 127 comparison after some more use?
@FordRasmussen3 жыл бұрын
I am more use to the 127 now, but there isn't a noticeable improvement in the views with it. I've been able to see the same things with both. I actually like the eyepieces that come with the 70 better, so I usually use them with this telescope too. I've tried recollimating the 127 but still haven't been able to get it 100% right (though I'll keep trying!). In that regard, I prefer the 70 which doesn't need collimated. However I do really like the EQ mount... So basically, I think my assessment remains the same. Thanks for asking though!
@pablopolanka2 жыл бұрын
It's an OK telescope for its price, but it's got a spherical main mirror that causes spherical aberration, partially corrected with a cheap Barlow lens incorporated into the focuser. It's better than a toy but not great for the more serious hobbyist, including beginners.
@smittysmith32273 жыл бұрын
That is a Bird/Jones Telescope. That means it has a corrector lens at the bottom of the focuser tube to make up for the shorter optical tube assembly and will have to be removed to collimate the telescope and reinstalled after you complete the collimation procedure. It is easy to remove and I can tell you the procedure if you would like.

Remove the focuser tube from the OTA. Looking at the bottom of the focuser tube you will see the B/J lens assembly that is contained in a black plastic double ring assembly. “Do not be tempted to unscrew the inner lens holder.!”The lens will come out of that part of the assembly and there will be the problem of the lens not being reinstalled in the correct direction which will mean you will have to take the entire assembly apart again to flip the lens over and reinstall it. Also you do not really want to handle the bare lens when you could have just removed the assembly as I now describe it. The whole assembly unscrews like a lid off a jar from the focuser tube. It is a thin ring but it will unscrew from the focuser tube by hand. This will keep the entire assembly together and it can be set aside while you now replace the focuser tube back into the OTA and collimate the telescope as a normal reflector telescope is collimated. Once you complete collimating the telescope, remove the focuser tube, reinstall the B/J lens assembly to the bottom of the focuser tube, reinstall the focuser tube to the OTA and you have completed the process. You will learn after a few times that the process can be done faster each time you collimate the telescope. Be cautious not to over tighten and strip the screws that hold the rack & pinion focus wheel and shaft assembly into the tube. A helpful hint it to lay everything out in the order that you remove it and reassemble it in the reverse order as this will help speed up the process. “Cheers and good luck”

The bottom lens shouldn’t need any corrections after its factory adjustments. Should only need to collimate it once in a while

At 2:10 he mentioned that he bought the telescope second-hand and that it had already been done.
@theperson77183 жыл бұрын
@@denniskeith8725 OK. 2.10 is after what he said but that's neither here nor there. Anyway he said at 1:54 that he said he hadn't done a collimation yet and I don't care if he bought it brand new or not, you always want to check the collimation of any telescope before using it. Buying 1 used is even more of a reason to do so as the person selling it might be doing so cause it was out of collimation and could get good views from it, either way collimation is key. PS. The simple fact of taking your scope to your favorite viewing spot could throw your scope out of collimation........ Just saying. So what you said is completely null and void. Should mention too that collimation is more critical in mirror type scopes and not so much in lens types.

if you could return that scope and get the meade polaris 130 model it be 100x times better. The model u got is a birds jones design (Barlow lens in focuser) images will be fuzzy & soft. a 5" inch scope should NOT be on a eq1 mount (its too light) the mirror is spherical not parabolic etc. the meade version is abit more but its 130mm has a parabolic mirror so images will be much better, comes on a eq2 mount (so better) red dot finder not a 5x24 finders (which is trash). the meade eq2 is vixen mount which is great in this price range. its a much better scope overall.

Its a Garbage telescope , i know i had a similar one , thing is all these off the shelf Newtonian scopes are made from mostly Spherical Glass mirror . Some will say ok , even large professional Scopes have Spherical mirrors , thats not bad . Yeah , but at F10 or even F20 not at F4 . You see the shorter the scope , the more it bends light , it gets speed or wide views and photon density but at expense of bending light . When you bend light you get Optical imperfections , called Aberrations , and these are mostly Spherical Aberrations . They manifest as general fuzziness, lack of sharpness , inability to handle high magnification . And of course the bigger the light cone angle , the more expensive Eyepieces you need , and bigger secondary mirror where you lose contrast , at F4 , you need a good eyepiece . At F3 you need 300$ eye piece . At F2 you need perfect EP. So the point is , if you are going to use a Spherical mirror you need to use at least F7-F8 Focal ratio F8 is a good balance between wide fields of F4 and optical perfection of F12 , so its a good balance . Take even 70mm Reflector that is F10 , it will give better views then that 127mm one . Much better . If you want F5-F6 Scope you need to work on that mirror , and get better secondary and focuser and EP , if you want F3 -F4 , you better make that primary mirror close to perfect and get best focuser you can get because focusing will be an issue , and you need expensive EPs . For F2 and F2,5 .. you need absolutely perfect mirror , and EPs and focuser that are not even made .F2.8 is a practical limitation So that is the story . Problem is if you go to the store , only thing you will find is F4-5 Newtonians , i had to bust my ass to find 6inch F9 scope , they sell it but you need to find it , and its cheap , 300$ maybe less , and its so good it will outperform all of those other scopes in everything except wide field and speed of photography . And will be almost as Sharp as 5 inch APO triplet refractor , maybe even sharper , but with a bit less contrast . SO far as i am concerned , due to not wanting to spend 300$ for EP and , correctors and focuser , i only use F8 scopes . You cant find those so you have to build them , luckily its not hard .
