Celina .000-.112 BAC

Example of HGN at three different alcohol levels starting at a .000 BAC and ending at a .112 BAC. The three recordings walks through the entire Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test, from the medical assessment to lack of smooth pursuit, distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation, and onset of nystagmus prior to 45 degrees. Also lack of convergence was done at the end of each test.

At first without alcohol but then as the level increases the amount of jerking increases.

thank you for this. just finished HGN class in my department and am getting ready to cert soon. Still cant ever seem to notice the damn onset prior to 45 test. far too damn subtle

The way I like to think about it is you will be going out slow. Their eye will be moving slowly and smoothly. Then if the clue is there you will see the eye hang up and pause before jumping to catch up to your finger. Once you see that stop and hold your finger still. Most of the time you will then see the eye bounce back and forth a few times before settling. If you keep going you will see that jerk again. If that all happens prior to 45 you have your clue. You should still be able to see white in the corner of their eye at that point. Let me know if you have any questions! Thanks for watching.

Did she have nystagmus prior to 45? I wasn’t seeing it at the .08

Yep! If you look at about the point her eye stops moving you will notice a small bounce. It’s not the large repetitive clue like max deviation. You’ll see that she still has white in the corner and that her eye won’t move smoothly at that point, jerking as it moves. Then when I stop you’ll see another slight jerk as I’m confirming.

Was I seeing vertical at .08? Not a very tolerant drinker I’m guessing.

As someone that does vision research for a living, I think people are seeing horns on a horse here. I have never seen "proof" of a concept in which only half of the experiment is shown. Where is the cue? How can we trust that whatever is being observed is not caused by manipulation from the test operator?
