Came here looking for the Pogues recommendation. Great fun as a band, and I'd like to see a discussion of Shane and Kirsty's singing in Fairytale in particular. This channel's not very sweary though; might need to check the lyrics. The more recent version of the lyrics without the homophobic slur might be usable? Have to say The Band Played Waltzing Matilda is a cover version though. One of a number I think. The original is by Eric Bogle, an Australia-based Scot who does folk and a lot more. I love his live album I Wrote this Wee Song. When my kids were babies I needed something with a waltz rhythm that I could sing quietly from memory while tired and bobbing them round the kitchen in the middle of the night, so The Band... and also No Man's Land (a similar song in original artist, covers and subject, as well as musically) became go-to lullabies for us. Might explain something about the younger one's dark turn of mind...

i think like all art you have to take it in the context of it's time and PUNK wanting to shock you and provoke thought. like TSOL's Code Blue and The Forgotten Rebels 'f#ck me dead. Wow! I never ever thought you would analyse my favourite punk band! Thank you Elizabeth! 😁 I've heard Dropkick Murphys describe themselves as vocally challenged, but that wouldn't be punk rock right? But...... It would be amazing if you could get Al Barr for a Tea Time interview (although Ken Casey sang this Christmas song). Al suffered an 'arterial venus malformation'. This resulted in one paralysed vocal fold and I believe he struggles with oxygen flow to the brain while singing. I'd love to hear you discuss this with Al or better still, Al and Ken as they have two vocalists and find out how he manages to perform so often and consistently. Thanks again Elizabeth, you made my day with this one!

The Rumjacks are an Australian Irish punk band, it was FASCINATING to be introduced to their music after being a big fan of Celtic punk bands from North America. The style is similar, but the lyrics are very different, because of course their stories/experiences are so very different.

Yep, The Rumjacks style of writing, most notably the lyrics, was mostly done by Frankie McLaighlin, the Scottish born lead singer, who was a masterful poet and blended modern English with the some scot/Celt language and old world English of sorts. Gave it a real different flavour, it was magnificent. Sadly Frankie had his troubles and the band parted ways with him. They now have an American lead singer and the writing duties are spread around a bit more but the music is still fantastic and lyrics still tell great stories, but certainly has a different feel to it now. But certainly worth checking out!!

As someone else pointed out, the hand drum is a bodhran (pronounced bo-rahn), and is a Celtic drum that was used for war because of how loud they can be. When played well (and it is far more difficult than it seems), it can take on almost a heart beat like sound, and adds a very unique beat to Celtic music. A now disbanded, but popular Celtic folk rock band here in Canada, was called Great Big Sea... And for the first decade of the band, the only percussion instrument they used on stage was Sean McCann playing bodhran. GBS also wisely chose to use button accordion often because as they noted once in an interview "Accordions can be heard at the back of a very loud bar or dance hall.", which makes sense for largely acoustic instruments that are used in Celtic music. As for this song, I friggin' love it. Loved it from the minute it came out. I found your video as a recommended while I was watching their video as part of my annual playlist. Another really good more recent tune that sums up The Dropkick Murphys well is Goin' Out In Style... In typical Celtic fashion, it's a very funny song about dying (Great Big Sea has a traditional one called The Night Pat Murphy Died that is a banger too)... And on that note, Merry Christmas, and I'm so glad to see someone with your acumen enjoy something like this... Another fun punk adjacent act is Frank Turner. His lyrics are... Like no one else. Love him.

If you're doing more Dropkick Murphys, you should do the song "Forever". It's the best lovesong ever written. It's about the real, deep, imperfect love and not some sugar coated imaginary schlock.

On off years my mother only put up 11 Christmas trees and she had one that stayed up year round. The annual tree was then decorated for each holiday as the year progressed.

I still haven't gotten tired of "Shipping up to Boston". Scantily clad women are welcome at my Christmas gatherings. Elizabeth, you're invited.

Stair sledding tips: couch cushions, the big ones you can make forts out of, are more efficient barriers than pillows. The foam is stiff enough to absorb a lot of force and are fairly big. They also stay in place a bit better. And I would suggest doing it on a carpeted floor & stairway. It's a bit softer and might be a smidge less bumpy. Don't worry if there is a wall right at the bottom of the stairs. You won't be going too fast, and the cushions should protect you (and the wall). Me and the guys at university collectively did a couple hundred runs in this one house where there was no more than about 4ft of clear space at the bottom & nobody got hurt.

Those two boys must have had SO much fun filming this video. We only see the perfect takes, I wonder how much mayhem they got up to that we didn't get to see.
