+Miroslav Mydlo I think in AoE 2 you also have the invisible "building armour" stat attached to the units which Masonry and Architecture mention in the description, and I think the Mangonel line and Bombard Cannons exactly deal that type of damage. So in other words I reckon that's the equivalent of Siege Damage from AoE 3 (not so much AoM's "Crush Damage" since infantry and cavalry are resistant to it). Don't quote me on it but I think this might be the case.

As a player who mains Celts, I was waiting on this one for along time :) True they dont have hands-down the best siege in the game, but the thing is, Celt siege is so flexible across all siege units, bonuses and wood bonus, that you never feel bad when going siege on Celts. With most civs you have to think about the enemy civs/units, but with celts you are always safe going heavily on wood and building a couple siege workshops fast because there will always be something useful there.

Woad Raider and Pikemen swarm. The very low gold cost of Woad Raiders and the 0 gold cost of Pikemen allows you to swarm them even after all the gold has been bled dry from the map. They are also fast enough to hawk down missile/siege, so cavalry not needed. You can pump out enough of them and their decent enough to swarm any infantry masses. This technique has never failed me to win a LONG victory when the map will eventually be reduced of all gold.

@Porglit8 жыл бұрын
Great overview, honestly. The only thing I would say different would be to give their cavalry a B-. This may sound crazy, but I think one of the primary functions of cavalry is to counter archers, and even pallys without the last armor upgrade have less pierce armor than a cavalier with. Their hussars are terrible for taking on archers, with pierce armor as low as a champion and no bloodlines to boot. This magnifies their weakness to archers, which is especially bad considering they're the counter to all the infantry you're expecting to have.
@AinaweeUAE8 жыл бұрын
+Porglit Agree with the cavalry being weak, but honestly their siege is enough to take care of archers. Siege Tanks (rams) to soak up the arrow fire, and onagers to turn the archers to ash, I don't think they need cavalry.
@Porglit8 жыл бұрын
AinaweeUAE I totally agree, which is why I don't think they're a horrible civ. But I don't think the cavalry rating should reflect their siege strength. A B- for their cavalry would just mean you have to look elsewhere to counter archers, and oh hey, A+ for siege!
@AinaweeUAE8 жыл бұрын
Porglit Agreed! That's what I meant to say, I agree with your B- grade for their cavalry as it's weak :)
@landochabod78 жыл бұрын
+Porglit To me it's a straight C. > No bloodlines makes for a subpar knight rush. They have a good feudal eco to compensate, but not as much as, say, Vikings. > In Imperial Age I'd much rather have the last armor upgrade and bloodlines than two unit upgrades that are much more expensive. Honestly though, I think the Woad Raider functions like something between light and heavy cavalry line, what with speed, cheapness and good attack.
@Porglit8 жыл бұрын
landochabod7 Having pallies, even without bloodlines and the last armor, is still better than a C, especially with hussars as well. Not good, mind you, but I wouldn't go THAT low. As for Woad Raiders, they are closer to light cav, but they're missing the distinctive 3 pierce armor, which is what makes normal hussars so good against archers.

Infantry and Siege, imo. If anything, I've considered them superior to the Slavs with both of those labels. Slavs do have cheaper siege and Druzhina, which are both nice, as well as the tanky Boyar, but I don't think any of those can actually compete with the Celts' elite Siege Onager machine guns. Emphasis on the 'machine guns' bit. :p Their faster infantry is also pretty decent, and I've always been a fan of the Woad Raider.

Am I missing something here? Celt's 15% faster wood gathering bonus makes a much, much bigger deal if you skew your spending towards wood heavy units. It's way way faster to get 4000 wood as the Celts than it is to get 1000 wood, 1000 food, 1000 gold and 1000 stone. Therefore you should lean towards using units that cost lots of wood- ships, skirmishers etc. Effectively it's the same as 'wood cost of everything is 15% less'

Not really related to the Celts, but to your grading system of tech trees (throughout the series). I feel there needs to be a base civ that is the worst for a certain category (excluding the Aztecs and Incas and their lack of cavalry) and a then the best one. So like how their archers here got a 'C', and if I've been able to keep up to date and remember correctly, they're one of the worst for archery (even with that lumberjack bonus) or came close with the Spanish, then their siege being an 'A+' even though their somewhat weaker than the Koreans, they're good, but A+ is just kind of confusing (for the base game I suppose, with the expansions if they did buff em, that'd make a little more sense). I'd just like to see "base lines", 'A' for these guys are the best, 'E' for these guys are the total worst at this, 'C' for the meh civ at this. This maybe too late to implement however, and if you can provide a detailed way of how you grade civs, I'd understand more. I mean, I suppose it'd be hard to say this is the best as you'd have to take into account of the strategies, but if you don't then this works just fine. Nice vid tho, thanks.

i dont know if it works the same with celt wood as it does with turk gold, but i found turks actually collect gold faster than the 15% it actually says. i think it is between 17 and 18% faster. it might be worth testing because collection rates probably work similar to attack rates with their % bonuses being more than they give credit for. When you're playing as celts, you might be tempted to go into cavalry because they have paladins. however, the lack of bloodlines and the last armor upgrade makes them very vulnerable. when you consider how much the paladin upgrade costs it is rarely worthwhile to get the paladin upgrade or invest heavily into heavy cavalry. getting the paladin upgrade usually just backfires by making u waste all that gold on a unit that has a severe lack of upgrades. personally, i would rather go heavy cavalry with a civ like the turks that have bloodlines and the final armor upgrade and be able to get 10 extra cavalier out than invest all that money in the paladin upgrade which typically wont pay off, especially considering how strong their siege and infantry are.

Do you have any commentaries about how different civ's do with a population cap of 75 or lower? That's how we always played in college because defense buildings meant more, and you had to balance your army and economy more.

I think this civilisation is the most historically inaccurate in the game, because the Celts were not known to siege anything. Those bonuses and advantages should be redirected to the monastery. Scotland and Ireland had cathedrals, monasteries, and churches all across their territories. They also both have a lot of religious history, so they should have more monastery technology and some monk bonuses.

I’m guessing the siege units are to compliment the infantry by providing protection against and countering ranged units.

At least they're known as an Infantry and Siege Civilisation now. It always was weird that they were never considered one before Definitive Edition.

Celts have pretty much always been my favorite civ. Awesome Eco and inf and best siege in the game. As well as being good on pretty much any map. And yes I liked them before Hoang.

Thanks Spirit for another overview. I really had no idea what that Celt sheep bonus actually did haha! I'll have to lame some sheep next time I play. You're slowly getting through all the civ overviews. Keep it up!

Hmmm.. correct me if I am wrong. But after playing numerous games of NR40 etc on GameRanger, its fairly common to see the celts purposely miss chemistry due to the fact that it lowers attack rate. True?

I don't think I've ever went siege Rush. Only recent rush against AI was in fortress starting at Imperial. They didn't fight back against a single ram and group of calvery archers.

Just wanted to say that i recently discovered your channel and all your videos about AoE2 are amazing. Watching these videos made me realize a lot of civilization bonuses i overlooked and the analisis you do is perfect, quantifying every % and showing the "de-facto" bonus. Thanks a lot really! So much informing, and relaxing too hehe

People from Glasgow call Celtic (The football team) 'Sel-tick' and Celtic (Historical) 'Keltick' however when talking about the Celts we call it 'Kelts' just like anyone else :)
@TheOfficialSK3X8 жыл бұрын
No... No Scotland doesn't refer to Celts as Selts. It's still Celts. Only the football team Celtic is referred to as Seltic, not Every rendition of the word Celt

Hey +Spirit Of The Law , I'd like to point out a fact that you missed in the Inca's civ overview, The Inca unique unit the slinger, aside from an attack bonus vs infantry, also has an attack bonus vs siege units, well, not all of them though, it only seems to have an attack bonus vs the ones with extremely high pierce armor, such as the Battering Ram and the siege tower. The trebuchette is kind of weird, considering a Slinger with 9 atk in the Imperial age deals 1 damage to a packed trebuchette, but 3 damage to an unpacked trebuchette which has 150 pierce armor. are there any other units with strange bonuses against siege such as this? Please let me know if this information was useful, I'm a big fan of yours! ^~^
