The Big Lebowski is a film in which several interesting plots attempt (and fail) to attach themselves to the main character. The story itself is virtually unimportant, as the tale seems content to stand on the attitudes of the characters, rather than on any hero's journey.

Fun bit of trivia: The clothing the Dude wears in the movie is just shit from Jeff Bridges' real closet. Apparently one of the Coens (I forget which) saw him in that kind of clothing when he came in at some point and decided they wouldn't be able to improve on that with a costumer and just ask Jeff to wear what he'd usually wear to the set, though obviously with what was in use temporarily there for continuity and reshoots and stuff.

One of the funniest films of all time in my opinion. Makes me think of my niece though. Only five years younger than me so more like a little sister. Saw this in the theater with her when we lived near each other in Seattle and hung out regularly. We laughed so hard. Unfortunately she went NC with our family 20+ years ago. Also I used to work graveyard and on Friday night/Saturday morning we had an hour+ of down time after our one hour lunch. Enough time to watch a movie from 2-3 am in the break room. There has been a lot of speculation that Donnie is just a figment of Walter's imagination, and that the Dude just plays along with Walter's delusion for the sake of their friendship. Donnie may have been someone that Walter served with in the Army who was killed in Vietnam. It's hard to catch any scene where the Dude is directly talking to Donnie.
@0okamino Жыл бұрын
Would a mortuary cremate a figment of his imagination, though?
@willmartin7293 Жыл бұрын
You may want to rewatch the mortuary scene. I think it could be plausibly argued that the mortuary visit was all in Walter's head, and that the Dude was just humoring him. Even the Dude's anger over being covered with the supposed ashes of Donnie was more like someone who knew the ashes really came from a barbecue pit than actual human remains.@@0okamino

There's also the part in the closing scene where Gary says says "Sorry to hear about Donny." It would have made sense for him to say that to Walter if he didn't actually exist, but not so much to the Dude...
@willmartin7293 Жыл бұрын
Yes, you make a good point. But taking this line of thought to the extreme, maybe Gary was telling the Dude that he was sorry that Walter has lost his imaginary friend. I can only think of one scene where the Dude comes close to directly addressing Donny, and that is when Donny is walking away from the bowling alley and the Dude yells out "goodbye" to him. And even then, I think it could be construed that the Dude was just humoring Walter's delusion.@@Blutteufel

No one ever picks up on the Dude calling the ferret (a weasel) a marmot (a rodent). This sets up the whole "park ranger" discussion at the bowling alley. I always thought these were two of the best gags in the movie. A lot of women don't really get this flick. I watched it with an ex-lady friend once and the only thing she laughed at was the Dude dropping the roach on his junk. Paraquat is a broad-spectrum herbicide (kills all plants) that was used to aerial spray dope fields back in the '60s. If you ingest any it turns your lungs into paper bags and the only cure is a transplant. Some growers sold their dope after it had been sprayed, with predictable results.

The board The Dude nailed to the floor wasn't meant to be a trap. It was just meant to brace the chair used in an earlier scene against the door to prevent it from opening. In reality, it would have worked. Doors swing into a room (at least in the USA. I can't speak for anyone else) for two reasons: First, swinging outwards would impede the flow of traffic, causing a fire hazard and countless injuries from being smacked by doors. Second, the hinges are on the inside, preventing someone from breaking in by just pulling the pins out and taking the door off the hinges.

I saw an interview with Jimmie Dale Gilmore (who plays Smokey, the bowler on the receiving end of Walter's bowling rage) a while back, and he was asked if his toe was over the line or not. He laughed and said he's truly the only person who knows, as from the angle it was shot, even Joel and Ethan Coen couldn't see where his foot was. He then grinned and said he'd never tell a soul. I also find it funny that the narrator (who by Sam Elliott's own admission has no idea what he's even doing there) says things worked out pretty good for the Dude and Walter. Umm, HOW? LOL. The Dude didn't get his rug back, his friend died, his car was destroyed, he still has no way of paying his rent, and everything in his house was trashed... repeatedly.
