The candy bar scene is by far my favorite. It has the two craziest things in this flick: 1. The guy has no problem with being an accessory to multiple felonies but thinks twice about stealing a candy bar. 2. It depicts the only successful theft in the film.

I do know he's Professor Snape. What's troubling is there's an entire generation who don't seem to know him for anything else. He's absolutely the best cast member in 1991's _Robin Hood : Prince of Thieves_ . Star Trek fans will likely cite his turn in _Galaxy Quest_ too. I also highly recommend a beautiful ghost story he made called _Truly, Madly, Deeply_ if you fancy a good cry during the Winter blues.

Given that "Truly, Madly, Deeply" is a movie that resonates with me so deeply after I lost my wife to cancer, you can imagine how well I regard Alan Rickman for that performance. That movie also holds a kudos, twenty years later, for making the woman who had since entered my life realise (with the cello scene) why my wife's family demanding her wedding ring back after her death is why I want nothing to do with them ever more.

3:44 - For those who saw this movie in the 80's or 90's, that technology was really incredible and unbeliavable. Buttons, not to push, but on the screen? Digital buttons? At that time it looked like science fiction thing.
@kryptonianguest19032 жыл бұрын
Yes, Die Hard was filmed while the tech was still in development, several years before the first touch screens went into production. That screen in the movie was playing a recording and Bruce Willis had to learn the timing in order to touch it at the right moment.
@sheaulle2 жыл бұрын
I don't think it really felt like science fiction. Touchscreens had been around for a while, there even was a lightpen for the C64. The HP-150 had a touchscreen in 1983 and there were industrial devices that had them, so it was more like today seeing someone using a fancy 3d printer or an ai driven car, not like holograms or downloading your memories on a computer, which still have to be invented. 🤓

BEST CHRISTMAS MOVIE EVER!! Before Bruce Willis was cast as John McClane, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Harrison Ford, Kevin Costner, James Caan, Michael Douglas, Tom Cruise, Mel Gibson, Richard Gere, Charlie Sheen, Clint Eastwood, Paul Newman, Nick Nolte, Kurt Russell, Jeff Bridges, Sylvester Stallone, Warren Beatty, Ryan O'Neal, Dustin Hoffman, Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, and Charles Bronson were considered. For the cop Al Powell, Laurence Fishburne, Denzal Washington, Gene Hackman, Robert Duvall, and Wesley Snipes were considered. Paul Verhoeven, Director of RoboCop was considered to direct until John McTiernan was picked. The movie is based on the 1979 novel Nothing Lasts Forever, which was the sequel to The Detective which starred Frank Sinatra. In the novel he is named Joe Leland rather than John McClane. The ending is a lot darker than the movie itself: SPOILERS! McClane shoots Gruber in the chest but not before he grabs Holly by her sweater where they fall out the window to their deaths. Karl does survive and starts to shoot at police and reporters with an M-60 Machine Gun. Powell kills Karl with an M-16 rifle where a stray bullet from Karl's gun hits McClane in the leg, where he is placed in an ambulance but dies of his injury.

These were Breakout roles for Bruce Wills and Alan Rickman. Bruce Willis was known as "that TV guy" and Alan Ricknman was mostly known for UK stage roles. John McClane isn't "a muscle-bound Rambo-type," takes damage, has moments of fear/doubt/introspection, and is "dead man walking" by the last quarter of the movie. Hans Gruber is a cool/sneering/ruthless/flexible European Bad Guy like no other.

I think my favorite part is that none of the "Germans" understand each other when they speak German. Hilariously bad accents are a consistent feature across John McTiernan movies. Alan Rickman as a German, Sean Connery as a Soviet, Arnold Sharzenegger as an American/person. He certainly takes advantage of the audience's necessary suspension of disbelief.

For whatever it matters, because you mentioned it, I prefer the bed-hair-and-no-make-up look. Makes it more of a relaxed kind of thing, while getting gussied up makes it feel more formal, and I think it's a better look, anyway. That aside, what a lot of people don't pick up on--and I didn't; it had to be pointed out to me--is that as much as Ellis is pure slime, that isn't *all* he is. Nothing can excuse his reprehensible behavior toward his female co-workers nor how it was tolerated, but he's more than *just* sleaze. He didn't give up Holly as Johns wife, he didn't say she invited him. Ellis said they were old friends and that he'd invited John. 'Eighties movies wee good for that--characters who weren't one-note, two-bit roles. They could be more; they could have facets, like a real human being. A lot of 'Eighties movies were like that, which is one reason I think so many people these days like those movies as they discover them.
