You make so much sense! I have taught for over 30 years and you and I are on the same page. So glad you are not "cutesy". You keep it real.

I do my best! Even the best of teachers struggle and cry at the end of the day! Our jobs are hard! Early childhood can be especially hard...the give us anything and everything and expect us to be an expert and know how to handle everything. We are amazing...but we are human! Thanks so much for your comment...you seriously made my day!

I so wish I had an aide. 12 children by myself is very difficult to do centers with. Any suggestions are welcome!

Oh my /gosh! I have no idea how anyone in their right mind can expect someone to handle 12 kids alone...I wonder if that is legal where you are...check ratios for childcare...then talk to your admin. That is such a difficult task!

@@teachpre-k101 - The state of Texas allows up to 22 pre-k kids in public schools. I work at a private school and we follow what licensing dictates. I believe licensing states up to 14 can be in a pre-k class, with no aide. It’s ridiculous!

Thanks for the video! It explained a lot. I do have a question…do you teach new math concepts in the small group or do you do a more formal lesson at the carpet first and then practice at small group with an activity? I have talked to different teachers who do both. But I’m curious what works for you.

I will at least INTRODUCE a concept during circle time and then do an activity to go into the concept further or do more teaching at centers. It really depends on what i'm teaching and how much the kids understand. Since I do a lot of repeat activities...it is a good way to track progress and depend on prior knowledge. Sometimes I will spend more time on a concept during circle time and use our small groups as a guided practice. I don't really stick to one method. I don't box myself in, and I really let the children guide what I do. If they understand something quickly, I will go one way...and if they need more help...I go another. Does that make sense? Be open to following where the students need you to go and you will do what is best for them. I can tell you are already an amazing teacher!

@@teachpre-k101 That makes sense! I like that you guide instruction based on the kids and how much they understand a concept. I also love playing tons of games and sing lots of songs with them to practice concepts. I, too, do a lot of repeat activities like the roll and cover, roll and graph, bump games, things like that. This is my second year in pre-k as I’ve taught older grades in the past so I’m trying to go for more play based than paper pencil like the older grades do. I’m so used to teaching a formal lesson with notes and everything so this is different for me but in the best way! Prek is a joy! Just want to be sure I’m doing what’s best for kids! Thank you for all your helpful videos!

We have restrictions at our school. I also think I would almost need to do it documentary style for you to see what is really going on. One day when I have 2 aides,I will try to document the basics on film. I know it would be helpful. If I just kept a camera running...it would look like the chaos it sometimes is! LOL! There really is a structure there...It's just not rigid. Rigidity and 3-5 year olds just doesn't work.

@teachpre-k3588 Yes, that would be helpful because it sounds like a lot going on listening to you explain it. 😊 I'm trying to envision it and how it works in practical terms. Anyway, thank you for your prompt response. I enjoy learning from others because it helps me grow as an educator, so keep making these helpful videos. Be blessed.
