Actually the platforms continue also on the other side of the walls with openings

A (more or less true) myth says the station was never supposed to be built in the first place. Others said that the walls separating most of the platform from the rest of it and the tracks were needed for structural reasons. In any case, as others said, the platforms are larger behind the wall.
