Are they even cost effective, it's basically a heat pump like an a/c system and you better have a long term warranty on it, too much to go wrong.

That looks like a normal cast iron Grundfos circ pump...it isnt even legal for potable water. The person who installed that is a bum, who shouldn't touch systems beyond his pay grade, which is about $12 an hour based on what we see here.
