Fantastic! You can FEEL the power and soul of New York City in Thads writing! Beautiful Snooky solo and lead trumpet of Al Porcino. What a great Treasure this historic band was

OMG I had the Central Park North album back in the early 70's. Loved it so much - it became part of my musical DNA! And this piece especially is such a hot composition with superb soloing, and this live version is fantastic.

It's easy to allow Thad's supreme composing/arranging skills to obscure our memory of what an extraordinary player he was. This solo goes a long way to providing that needed reminder. Of course, NOBODY forgets Snooky's playing. :) Thanks to Thomas for this video.

I don't think this band ever made a bad record, and I love seeing the live stuff. Does anyone know Thad's setup on the flugel - the rim on that mouthpiece looks trombone-size to me. But man he could play so pretty, especially when you think about how advanced these charts were to people at the time.

Snooky Young was the band's primary lead trumpeter until he left for California in 1971. Though in this case, he no doubt passed some lead parts to Al Porcino, another great lead trumpeter.
