4:50 This woman has 26 backrooms and is generating a turnover of R150 000 per month? That's an average of about R5800 per room per month. As a landlord myself I'm jealous.

R 5 800 per month backroom, in the township is nonsense. She is probably lying or the guy is lying.

Thanks for the informative discussion. Unbelievable examples of how the 'public' servants are generally a hinderance! I must admit that I've also used the 'they don't pay tax' argument. Hopefully the message will get through to the bureaucrats, that the hidden township economy is currently probably the only way to get employment (& hence self-sufficiency) levels up.

The only honest way of running a business is cash, ignoring all laws, taxes, paperwork and registrations.

Vat registration is a nightmare, I have started a business in SA, but have been waiting for weeks for my vat so the business property can finally be transferred into my name.

With such unemployment there should be many peoples laying all over and daying from hunger to match this percentage. So it mean either they do crime or informal dealing. Informal mean for current government illegal. It is illogical, except government officialsis/politicians are main beneficiary from whole system.

This guy does not understand how VAT works. To claim the VAT the vendors also have to add VAT to the sales price. A street vendor will never be better off being VAT registered.
