I absolutely love the album, Altered State, and this song especially. I'm the kind of metal/hardcore-head that loves my music energetic and furious (I'm one of the people that don't mind violent hardcore moshing/dancing), so it's out of character for me to like this, but this is just plain beautiful. The ambience and overall sound quality of this album is out of this world, so much so, that the clean singing (which I normally hate) not only doesn't retract from the quality of the music, but sincerely adds to it. Ashe O'Hara was a find for this band and it's a shame that he's no longer a member... I have no count for how many times I've heard the riff and accompanying piece that starts at 3:47 now. So etherial and celestial. One of the most beautiful pieces in all of metal in my opinion.

I have shown this song to so many people and they are unable to see the beauty and perfection in this song. This is one of the most beautifully written, and performed songs I have personally ever heard. I honestly feel bad for people who can't broaden their horizons and see the beauty in this. It's sad how closed minded people are. If it isn't in the mainstream and considered "popular" they are unable to form their own opinions on it.

god these lyrics. I feel them so much, how I had to emotionally divorce from my abusive family but the prospect of only finding peace results in a feeling of isolation while your own peace will stir up unhappiness and conflict in many others. Couple that with the perceived need to balance your own needs with the needs of your abuser and you have these lyrics. How you're trying to stall yourself because the abusers are the only thing you know. aarggh the torment and loneliness in this album is exactly what I used to feel before therapy

This may be one of my favorite songs, ever. Period. It's so philosophical in a meritable way that makes you really step back and be pensive about things you normally don't think about; how sometimes life can be stale and you question all your pain and its source at the same time. I can go on and on forever about this song but I'd rather it speak for itself and be beautiful in the terrifyingly existential and beautiful way it does.

The subject is battling thoughts, asking how do think, how do we bridge heart and mind. The instrumental ending is so perfectly analogous, starting off with the "mind" (7:10) in a steady rythm, this is purely logic and reasoning. Eventually "heart" comes in to play (7:23) and mind loosens up, although sitting there in the background. But mind makes a comeback, existential anxiety kicks in with full force and you're left without much hope.
