The key to zero congestion is electrification? Uh....how? Automakers have been promising zero congestion via self-driving cars for decades, even as far back as the 1950s. Congestion simply cannot be solved without reducing the amount of cars in the first place; it is a problem of geometry, not human error. Similarly with accidents, while they may be able to be reduced significantly if autonomous vehicles become safer than ones driven by people, it will be a lot harder if the infrastructure itself is not changed. Road widths must be narrowed, stroads eliminated, and land-use policy reformed. Even today where the technology exists I am skeptical that people will rely on it 24/7 and I think a lot of people just won't use it. Partially because some of the point of owning a car is being able to drive it yourself. I think in most cases public transportation will fill the role that automakers claim autonomous cars will.
@joeperrone6677Ай бұрын
It actually is - by making vehicles too expensive for the masses, road congestion will go down as fewer and fewer people can afford to own cars and through natural attrition older cars disappear - see Cuba for an example.

@joeaveragerАй бұрын
@@rp9674 I daytripped an i3 REX. Great car. Excellent idea. We bought a BEV but would really like to have an EREV like the i3 REX design to replace our V6 SUV someday. Although if batteries continue to improve (and they will) then the pony gas engine won't be necessary much longer. Would like to have either faster charging or longer range for long trips. Our current BEV is excellent. Rarely need to charge for very long and it has ~250 miles of range which is plenty for 95%+ of our trips. Wouldn't likely take it on a long beach trip though b/c it is smallish and charge speeds are slow.
@rp9674Ай бұрын
@joeaverager I have an I3 Rex that's relegated to a commuter since I got a 23 Bolt, long range, slow charging, although Miss Go Electric Channel insists it's short range. I rarely do long trips that would require fast charging, but I try it because I can't stand being on the road that long anyway charging brakes would be fine. Range extender is the smartest hybrid format, I think it's more of a preference than a need

The first Tesla was largely based on a GM EV, and there was less than 3 years between ending the EV1 program and the first functional Volt prototype. GM's pursuit of EVs was fueled more by competition with Toyota and government regulations than anything else. Tesla was just referenced as an example and punchline in a joke: "If those nerds in Silicon Valley can make an EV by strapping laptop batteries under a Lotus chassis, GM can absolutely make EVs." - Paraphrasing Bob Lutz

@@rp9674 The problem is, GM didn't believe people would pay the $150,000 per car it would cost to make the EV1 for a profit when gas was $0.90 a gallon. That's one area where Tesla proved GM wrong.

EVs have the advantage of not having increasingly complex engines and transmissions, many of which are having serious reliability issues. The biggest cost in an EV is its battery. Car makers are moving to lithium iron phosphate batteries, which are cheaper because they don't contain cobalt and nickel.
