Although I appreciate the years Cryptic has curated STO, some wins & losses, I do think DECA taking over could still result an overall positive long term. A bow of the head to this Frazier, not even knowing what he'll say, for taking on a probable hostile crowd. Hopefully Frazier will deliver some direct candid answers along with whatever requisite company speak. If DECA improves the lag & just maintains the current status quo mostly for a few more years I'd be content.

Figures I'd finally decide to give this game a chance, right as the game's continuing existence gets called into question. I've been vaguely aware of STO for over a decade but never could justify spending time in yet another MMO. Then about 3-4 days ago the youtube algorithm fed me a couple STO videos and I finally gave in and downloaded it. The space stuff looks and feels great considering the game's age; the ground stuff feels and looks a bit clunky. But the game has been fun. I like that the missions haven't felt cookie cutter (fly here and kill 10 ships, like nearly every WoW quest). I really feel like I'm in the Star Trek universe. They take full advantage of the IP rights, everything looks and sound just like it does in the shows/movies, including the characters and their voices being from the actual cast. I love that some of the ships from STO made it into Picard (I learned that a couple days ago). So yeah, if the game suddenly dies I'm going to be mad at myself for waiting for so long, and for choosing to get into it too late to see all the missions

I miss the Daniel Stahl days when we were all one community testing on tribble and trying to make the game work., playing with devs causing chaos at ESD late at night, Thomas just being one of us making suggestions in the forums, the constant feed of what was in development and what we would like to see. Once he left and perfect world took over that all died. The disconnect between the players and cryptic has existed ever since and no one ever asked the player base what we would like to see again.

I remember those days. I also remember those days ended due to, in no small part, the main methods of player-to-dev interaction growing increasingly hostile and toxic towards devs. Every time a dev would post something, it would get several-to-dozens of replies, often unrelated to the post or the particular dev's area of expertise, about bugs, glitches, content pacing, etc. I do miss the days the devs were part of the community, but it's no mystery why it stopped, and it had very little to do with the Perfect World takeover.

The CEO pretty much summed it up, American game devs get paid way more than devs from other countries because the cost of living is so high over there. It's not uncommon for American devs to be breaking $100k but an equivalent skilled dev from the UK can easily be found for under £50k. What this means is DECA isn't interested in matching Cryptics currents wages and rightfully so their current staff isn't interested in having their pay halved. Hence they're all going to be replaced overtime. Call my cynical but I see this as a good thing, with the exception of Thomas whose noticeably done a lot of good for the game, I feel like a lot of the work and effort at Cryptic stalled out years ago

There's many good things to be said about the game in general and the story path development which I believe has kept me committed. I looked over Phil Frazier's Reddit posts, and he said that they scrapped the idea of a "DECA roadmap" , and pivoted to training DECA staff on their engine (makes sense, as that will give them a more realistic evaluation for a time table) . Two questions here : Is Cryptic loosing exclusivity to it's "proprietary engine " , or are they renting it out to DECA ? Is Cryptic loosing the Star Trek license -- or rather , is the license being taken / absorbed into DECA ? Cryptic being the licensee , but DECA looking to be doing all the future work seems ... overly complicated, especially for a failing gaming company like Cryptic . He also defended Kael and Thomas . They both need it, despite what you may think . :) He also doesn't know how many people work on STO . Always a great sign . He had to check, and was also dubious if that data was ever provided (it has been, several times, both before and after the game launched) . Looking forward to a "Calm Down ! Nothing to see here !!" 'Naked Gun' style appearance from this Cryptic higher up ... (just to note, last time it was a year ago -- Jarrod Fisher -- Executive Producer , Jan 25 2023) . They should put this in the game schedule ... -- STO's yearly "... You Can't Handle The Truth !!" segment . 😂

I haven't really noticed any severe lag issues tbh, but I lately I've been playing solo patrols and log in, do some character maintenance stuff, personal endeavours, admiralty, that sort of thing, and log out. For event purposes I've only been doing the Pahvo ground tfo where I guess the lag issues are not pronounced because of the bridge officer ability issues you mention. I'm glad to see tho that Cryptic's management are going to address community concerns. While you are correct that the buck stops with the CEO that's only on Cryptic's end. Much of what has occurred has been due to Embracer Group's actions and their bad deal that fell through, their acquisitions of multiple gaming studios with money that they didn't have etc. I know you're aware of this MC Stu I'm just reiterating this for people's benefits. I actually think a lot of anger is justified here, we're losing talented developers and veteran developers who have decade plus change worth of experience because of a greedy publisher that spent money it didn't have to make more money that it turns out they won't be making either, and to salvage themselves a lot of costs have to be cut and this has lead to job losses and entire studios being closed. The playerbase and community have a right to be anxious and nervous over the game's future but I think we also have a right to be angry and channel that energy towards getting answers and towards making sure the current dev team are well supported and looked after. It sounds like DECA are keen to support STO at the current level of development we've had for a few years now and from reading the comments from Frazier on reddit it also sounds like Cryptic will be folded up or merged with DECA at some point and they will take over full development of current Cryptic games, STO included. I hope that means current employees are looked after. But because DECA is situated in Germany somethings like time zones and compensation packages will be different so that's likely a good chunk of the reason why some devs have already left and or are looking for better prospects locally. Again a lot of this is unfortunate that it has come to this. Thanks for taking the time and energy to make this video as well.

Previous ship leads weren't great.. some pretty terrible ship designs before. While they can recover the technical talent (and hopefully find people who can fix some of the just silly bugs that've been there since beta), but the ship concept lead is very, very hard to replace. Now, that being said, if Phill Frazier goes on Ten Forward as gives a clear path for STO that spans years, then fantastic. If he acknowledges the problems in the game, rather than constantly refer us to the report a bug forum, then that would be nice. If he can provide timescales for issues to be resolved, then all the better. I think the CEO's comment that 'game studios see people come and go all the time' is a bit disingenuous. Clearly this is highly exceptional for STO. It makes me feel we might not get a straight answer for the other topics. They've not had this level of turnover.. well, ever, that I've been aware of. Sure, there's a lot of people digging for it now, but still, there's a lot of top people leaving. Would have felt a lot better if he'd just said, 'due to circumstances beyond our control, some people are leaving'. Even that, as vague as it is, is a lot more honest. I also get a feeling from the job postings that people are leaving because they know they have to leave. They may not be getting fired, but they either know it's coming, or they know they won't be able to keep working (pay cuts, reorg, etc). So to say they're 'choosing' to leave doesn't sound honest, either. I don't know. I'll hear what he has to say with an open mind, but so far it's not passing the sniff test.

IMO the game has been in essentially maintenance mode for years. If you ignore putting out new ships, they've done very little. A couple new TFOs & missions every year. And just a rotation of the same old events year after year to keep DAU/MAUs up. Overall I see it as a good thing that old people are leaving and hopefully new blood coming in that actually want to get the game out of the doldrums. Or maybe the new bosses will just want to ride this game to its inevitable death while squeezing as much profit out of it as possible. At this point I'm fine with either way. Either make the game be exciting again or let it die. Hell... Maybe Deca will trash the whole thing and make a Sto2. 😆

STO2 would be DAO. Nobody spending money on STO would play unless everything they already purchased transferred over. I wouldn't. Also, unless it reused the assets from STO, you'd lose the voice overs by Spock, Odo, Rom, and others.

STO 2 - new exiting experience from DECA games, world renowned mobile games studio. Widely known from such games as ... well... uuh... Walking dead something? Yeah, that would be some game, right? 😂

I feel like there's no real path forward here. On one end of things, you have the stability issues and the game itself just being pretty stagnant the past couple years with what can/can't be added or changed in the engine due to it's age without monstrously bad technical issues. On the other hand, if the game ever shuts down, we'll never see another MMO like it - the industry has moved away from anything that isn't live service TPS/FPS garbage, sans the rare stuff that stood the test of time like FFXIV, WoW, etc. I just have the sinking feeling this next year might be the end of the line, for the game. We've reached the plateau of what can be done with the game/engine from a technical standpoint - to the point of them admittedly having to kitbash and jury rig things to work quite a few times over the past couple years - and now we're most likely losing quite a few of the folks who have experience maintaining that engine, and I don't see DECA sinking the time/resources into trying.
@jerekcolt92328 ай бұрын
I'm totally agree with you 💯 It's like they had no resources, no energy and no desire to maintain it as it was before 2019. This game is dying, and it is very sad for those who loved this game all these years.

It is what it is man. If they do then they lost the revenue stream from us the players. In all honesty they have to assess the entire situation and plan the best path forward because of the server issues and other problems within the game itself.

I mean... Maybe it's time? The engine is held together with duct tape and paper clips, at this point. The past two years, I've watched as the game has slowly started to fall apart at the seams, performance-wise. And with less and less urgency to fix long-standing bugs. And that's more so than it has over the past few years. I don't think a lot of people realize how old the engine is, and how hard it is to bring in new people who can dig into it and optimize/fix things. More so when it's pushed to it's absolute limit, in terms of what can be added to the code without huge stability issues. Whatever happens, I had a good time with it over the years, ever since I first logged in with my TOS Connie. I've found myself losing enthusiasm slowly over the past few years, and through periods of time where new story additions were few and far between. But that never stopped me from dropping back in for a month at a time here and there to enjoy the universe that had been built up, re-visit familiar spots, replay missions I had fond memories of, etc. Regardless of what happens, I hope someone on the dev team has the good sense to back up the source for the servers, so the game itself can be archived for all time. As it stands, there's currently a copy of a pre-Legacy of Romulus server source floating around out there, and with the right client you can log into and explore the game as it was then, complete with the sector space map and ESD. It's like a wonderous museum of a time long gone, back when the Odyssey was king of the ships, DS9 was just a *tad* too small, and ground combat was... REALLY really bad.

The way some folk are talking, it sounds like sto has always been a stable experience, with few bugs.. really? What we are experiencing now, we have experienced before.. on many occasions! the servers are held together by gaffa tape, function on faith, and have always been powered by rodents on mini treadmills. They prefer to ignore complaints when servers are struggling, but they can always report them as fixed, when server traffic is low. i think the flicker book rubber banding is feeling more of a big deal, because it's duly compounded by some change-based apprehension at the change of hands, and a tinge of sadness at the old guard being put to pasture. that will settle, on both counts, and we'll be back to our normal 'ridicule, and rail against' before we know it.

Great report Stu.. love the content you put out so please keep it up. As for STO, I would spend more on the game if the pricing was a lot better. Dropping two hundred dollars on a bundle is just something I can not do even though I want to buy the ships. I also hope that they focus more on telling a story than an agenda because too many games of late have moved into trying to appease groups instead of being focused on telling a great story. Having to dump tons of money to chase higher DPS ranges has been kind of a drag also when you're forced into playing only one way which anymore is a Tac char to get the Uber damage. Being one that has loved Engineers for ages the higher outputs of Tac players buries all else. I only hope that someday they will fix this and give Engineers something to make them shine.

If its slowly moving into ICU/Life Support mode and with devs/artists jumping ship left and right. I feel worried by 2025-2026 it will just be Lights On Only Mode. Maybe why this year 2024 for Yearly Event Reward they going out with last huray and give all 3 instead of choosing 1 of 3. if thats case then I'll be sad to see no more story eps/art/system updates/ship model updates to game. But least I'll be able to log in every once in while etc

7:53 this has been my average experience playing STO for years. All this time I had been suspecting it was due to the company being cheap and focusing on servers in the US, whereas I was in Europe. Since the move to DECA, a company based in Germany, I only experienced this kind of lag once, overall my ingame experience has improved. Although, this may be pure coincidence and simply an anecdotal experience I had.
