I completely agree that you should be branding yourself and not your products. A client is coming to you for your skills and expertise... and if they are coming because you use product XYZ, it usually is because you have the skill set (and likely reviews) to use it properly and well. Either way, it is you and not the product which is the deciding factor.

Your truly the only one I can learn from. I got into detailing as a side gig but I’m wanting to make it my full time. Hey Yvon how are you, my friend. I am not a detailer but more of a weekend / DIY detailer. My passion for cars started when my dad gave me a small bucket and a brush at the age of 7. My task was to wash the wheels (I guess this way he didn't need to bend down). That first wheel kicked off the whole car detailing passion. Now at the age of 59, the passion still lives on! I totally agree with you on selling yourself not the products. I had businesses in the past and always sold my talent and quality service before anything else. Like you said, build that and success will follow. MAS signing out!

In my country, due to exchange rate issues, using European and US coatings is prohibitively expensive. Hence, most detailers use private-labelled Made in China coatings (mid to high end). In my business, I can show off to the customer that Im using a 100% Made In Japan coating thats created, manufactured and packaged in Japan by a public-listed highly established company (equivalent to Meguiars) , and exported out as a fully sealed box…..complete with its own disposable glove, instruction poster, hardener/catalyst and applicator. And THATS a huge differentiating factor that gives confidence to my customers.

One point that you didn't touch on is... different coatings work better in some areas than in others (what works well in dry and humid Florida might not perform equally in cold and snowy Vancouver) and that different coatings provide different strengths (gloss vs slickness vs chemical resistance vs durability vs etc. etc. etc. I always speak with a client to assess how the vehicle is kept, maintained, what factors are most important to them, etc. In doing so, I am able to reaffirm their trust in my expertise, provide customized service to each and generally over deliver on their expectations. I see the bottom line in this in my returning customer rate and the number of jobs I get from their recommendations... $0 customer acquisition costs are a great thing.

The Detailers apply the coatings, but unfortunately rely on the coating companies marketing to sell.

I've considered hiring someone to apply the coating where I work. I'd literally pay out of my pocket because I just can't seem to get them on without smears, lines, streaks, etc. Not many "high spots" but I just loathe working with them. The other option is going independent, and offering the coating I use because it's much easier for me to use. But after two years of trying I finally seem to be doing ok with it... Just today was probably my second in a row where it turned out ok.

@Detailers Business Academy, with Yvan Lacroix - Yvan, it's Ceramic Pro 9H / Top Coat, and Xpel Fusion. Xpel Fusion is 50% easier but I've been pretty hopeless with it. Just yesterday I coated a car where it actually went decently. I think my problem was trying to remove all the coating on the first pass, and that seems to "set" the coating to the point where no amount of wiping can level out the smears, streaks, and lines. I just scooped off the bulk and "buffed" with another microfiber. This might do the trick? Still don't enjoy it. I was hired to do polishing, but the owner wanted me to try coatings. I have to coat two Porsches today. One is a black Cayenne. Wish me luck!
