Looks really cool. I'm considering their fumed pre with Nordic White oil on White oak. I wish i could treat out so the combos! What you did looks stellar so I'm psyched to do a finish on a pair of floor standing speakers that I'm building. Such a cool finish. Congrats!

what was used to get the black basecoat?
@TankFitness4 жыл бұрын
That looks fantastic! Thanks for sharing. Do you know if this would work well with closed grain woods?
@ShaunGuthrie-CaskWoodworking4 жыл бұрын
Well, I think this video shows that where the oil penetrates the more open grain in the cathedrals and such, where the tighter closed-grain does not take to the white. You'd have to experiment which is half the fun!

This is really cool! do you think you could use less white on top and have the effect be a little more subtle? maybe use grey instead of white?
@Phloored Жыл бұрын
They have lots of colors. I think you can even mix em to get a custom effect and make it as subtle as you want.

Great work, Shaun! DId you water popped the grains before applying Intense black pre-colour? Or did you wire brushed it?

Yes, always water pop, just not shown in this video. No wire brush needed as this wasn’t a Shou Sugi Ban finish

What I applied is the finish. Oil Plus 2C by Rubio.
@Hayden_Custom_Woodworks4 жыл бұрын
I am using white oak for my project as well…Before you applied the pre color intense black, did you use any of the wood cleaner or just lightly wipe the oak down with water? What did you apply the pre-color with? Were you buffing the 2C with white Scotch-Brite and wiping off with a buffing pad or terry cloth? I’ve never used Rubio, but I have a general understanding of the application. process, I just wanted to talk to somebody who’s actually used the product. I genuinely appreciate you answering my questions.
@ShaunGuthrie-CaskWoodworking4 жыл бұрын
Lots of questions! I love it. So rubio recommends using the wood cleaner, truthfully I did not. I used a tack cloth and then after used a wet lint free cloth to wipe it up and pop the grain. Then sanded it again and used the tack cloth again. I applied the pre-colour with a foam brush, you could use anything really. You'll want to make sure you get into the grain, if not you'll see the white oak peak through. You can always do a touch up once applied and wipe after to blend. I applied with a scotch-brite pad to work it into the wood, and then used a lint free cloth to wipe it off after about 5-10 min. Pretty standard process and their website is pretty good about it as well. Simple process and the results are amazing! Best of lock!

How long did you let the precolor dry before applying monocoat white?
@ShaunGuthrie-CaskWoodworking4 жыл бұрын
It’s pretty quick. Maybe an hour. But have to ensure it’s fully dry before applying Oil Plus 2C. So give it a day to be safe
@anssc5873 жыл бұрын
Is that a wet cloth?
@ShaunGuthrie-CaskWoodworking3 жыл бұрын
No, scotch bright pad to rub in the white Oil Plus 2C and then a lint-free cloth to buff off the excess.

How did you finish this piece? I am making a red oak table that I finished with black lacquer and white Rubio Monocoat for the grain. I want to put a protective finish on it before I use it. I was thinking polyurethane but I am not sure how the monocoat would react to it.
@ShaunGuthrie-CaskWoodworking3 жыл бұрын
You don’t need to. The oil plus 2C is the finish. Nothing more is needed. I’ve been finishing products with this for years, no problems. You cannot apply anything else on top of Rubio.
@hugoslavigos1682 Жыл бұрын
Let's say the pieces I intend to finish are floor fillers and are going to be walked on, would you say that the Rubio Oil plus 2C is sufficiently hard to resist wear?@@ShaunGuthrie-CaskWoodworking

Nice piece!!!! What grit sand paper paper did you go up to before applying the Intense Black Precolor?

I think it went to 180 grit. You don’t want to go too high.

Guys isn't this just a glazing technique you can do with a variety of paints?
@ShaunGuthrie-CaskWoodworking4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure, I've never heard of glazing over wood. The goal is for the oil to penetrate the wood and seal it so it has a nice protective finish on it.

@ShaunGuthrie-CaskWoodworking4 жыл бұрын
I actually think both Cerused and Pickling are similar in nature and come from the 16th century. So 500-year-old techniques that have made a come back which is quite cool. Thanks for watching!
