In short, don't stretch backwards or sideways, that'll compress nerves. Instead, use the trap stretch and chin-tuck shown from 10:50 onwards, and the stationary neck muscle excercises at around 15:20. I'll remember those. Been waking up with sleeping arms lately. Will also consult my local doctor for personalised advise.

i will give you some great advice. 1. Get a length of inner tube from a small motorcyle, like a 150 cc front wheel inner tube. You can get this for free out of many motorcycle repair shop rubbish bins. 2. Grasp the length of inner tube with both hands, palms down or forward, two to four inches apart. 3. Sit on a stool. Set your shoulders back and down (so your scapulae are flat) and keep your chin tucked (good posture) pull the tube apart in different directions - to the side, overhead, forward. One great exercise to to do these pull-aparts with your hands tounching the top of your chest. Again, pull back and down. 4. You won't get much stretch from the tube, especially at first. When you get stronger, you will get more stretch. But these are semi-isometric holds (meaning that there is little muscle lengthening and muscle fiber tearing but there is still some stimulation of the Golgi tendons, which makes it a very effective exercise) . 5. Maintain the holds at maximum strength (i.e., maximum muscle contraction) for at least six seconds (it takes a few seconds to build to your maximum contraction, so say ten seconds per hold). If you like, hold the holds even longer. I do the chest pull-aparts for up to a minute. 6. Your effort counts most of all. Put in maximum effort once you get max contraction. It is only for six seconds! 7. Do it just once a day for a few reps or even as many times a day as you like and every day too. Isometrics do not cause injury, but these are semi-isometric, meaning it is hard to overdo them, but not impossible. Have a rest day occasionally when you feel like it. It is up to you, but it becomes a little addictive, so watch out. 8. These exercises work hands, forearms, upper arms, shoulders, traps, neck, upper back and lats. You will be filling out your T shirts differently very fast. If you do these holds as hard as you can, you will see results very, very fast. Keep those shoulders back and down! Remember that. This is a very good exercise for those who spend a lot of time in poor posture at the computer or phone.

You are a miracle Dr. Mandell!🙏 Unfortunately, millions of people continue to do stretching exercises shown by physiotherapists because of this problem; they are not getting better, they are getting worse. So sad. And besides you're paying to be worse.

I'm 16 right now and have this problem already for 2 years. Just been diagnosed. Went to the doctor in the Netherlands but she didn't take me serious, said it was just puberty. My mom also thought that I was making it up a bit. While on a holiday in HK my family from HK took me serious and took me to a doctor to get a X-Ray. Before i went to the doctor i just thought that it were triggerpoints so when he diagnosed me with this i was shocked. I now exercise everyday and have to stretch my neck every 20 minutes to improve it. It is now a lot better than before but i have pay constant attention to it. I'm 16 but have the body of an eighty year old. People be aware of your posture and exercise!

Hey Doc, thank you so much for this video! I am only 57 but have lumbar stenosis in the last 2 years and now cervical spondylosis that has been flaring for about 3 months now and is just now getting a little better. Your video does such an amazing job at explaining to lay people like myself all about this condition. Because of my lumbar stenosis, which is so much better now after lots and lots of physical therapy and me committing to changing my gym habits to more like physical therapy than "no pain no gain" idealogy, I started swimming again more (have been a swimmer on and off again most of my life). Well, that is around when the cervical stenosis kicked in pretty bad...I am guessing that the flexion involved in the freestyle stroke is the culprit but wondered if you had any input about that. Again, I'm sure you are busy but these videos are invaluable to people like me and I might even start having my students do some neck exercises every day! I am hoping you have some input about my neck and swimming. I also have osteoarthritis in my knees and my right foot will go completely numb after being upright for more than 10 minutes. So, I am not even able to ride an exercise bike right now. Boooooo. All of this arthritis stuff is new to me. I broke my femur in half about 5 years ago and then subsequently had to have a hip replacement because those bones died due to lack of blood flow...and then all this arthritis stuff started. Ugg. Anyway, didn't mean to go on and on. Thanks again for this video and I would love any thoughts you have about this condition and swimming.

I've been having neck pain, shoulder pain, headaches, and just watching this video I followed what you were saying, and instantly I felt better. Not 100% but my neck muscles loosened up and my head was moving just like it was a hinge that had been oiled. And that explanation about the smaller disk space and compressing the nerves in the back is a lot of help to understand what kind of exercise is wrong or right. I'm so grateful for all the things that you share, and the fact that you are doing this for free. Plus all your positive food for thought. God bless you.

Wow, wow, wow! Thank you so very much for this invaluable information. I was diagnosed with spinal spondylosis, like many other people I know in their fifties, about 1 -1/2 ago and I've been through the mill with orthopedic surgeons who recommended arthritis meds and surgery, many wasted sessions at PT, plus a host of other remedies that did nothing (and in some cases made my pain worse). The chin pull exercises, after just three days, have actually made a difference, and now I have hope that by continuing to do these and correcting my posture, I can fix this and finally be pain free going forward. Everyone should watch this video. Thank you, Dr. Mandell.

Because they don't care about sick people. You're still young. Go to a physiotherapist and set up a proper exercise program to do every day to help your spine and muscles. Stick to those exercises because it's so easily to fall back to 0 and poor posture. Take care of your spine now and your older self will thank you. I suffer from multiple back issues too. Proper back exercises are our friends. Pills solve nothing in the long run when it comes to back issues.

Absolutely love your videos and thank you so much you explain everything so well.I am over the ditch in Australia and have been suffering worsening left side neck, ear, shoulder and arm issues for the last 8 months and now it’s getting to the stage I am starting to get excruciating headaches that go right up the back of my head to the my forehead and they will last for hours and I have noticed a slight tingling in the tip of my tongue but on the right side.Drs have ruled out stroke amongst other things but this pretty much started after visiting a chiro practicing the Gonstead method ! I woke 2 weeks after my 3rd visit with excruciating headaches that lasted another 2-3 weeks until I started seeing a chiro that specialised in cranial issues and dry needling which worked for a while but now my neck pain is starting up again and I have just got over a bad spell of vertigo and the nausea and lightheadedness that lasted around 4-5 days ….I now know after watching this that I have this condition .I also a subluxation (mid back) and chronic lower back pain since I was 19.I am going for an X-ray in the morning covering the cervical and thoracic area. This is being exacerbated by always sleeping on my left side, not being able to find the correct pillow and starting a desk job 6 months ago where I am on a busy switchboard 5 hours per day/5 days per week.I will do what you have recommended to do but if there is anything else I would love to hear about it as I refuse to go to a chiro again.

What a stupid comment, technology isnt bad, its lack of info on posture that is. I see all these parents and people in their 40's+ complaining about technology making kids have bad posture, um excuse me if you are the parent and you are actually concerned get off your high horse and teach them how to sit straight. We don't need to get rid of the greatest advances of a generation because people arent sitting straight (although I feel its more because the older generation feels insecure due to their lack of knowledge about it).

I'm so glad I saw this video because I'd just watched several videos demonstrating harmful stretches. 😬 I teach and am always leaning with head looking down and I just realized how much this has aggravated pain and stiffness in my neck! Thank you for this info!!❤️

This is mind-blowing! I have cervical spondylosis, a bulging disc at C2-C3, Occipital Neuralgia and Trigeminal Neuralgia. My Pain Specialist/Neurologist gave me exercises with neck flexion backwards (hanging backwards); neck flexion forward (chin to chest); leaning head to the Left/Right to stretch and also to pull gently looking downward at a 45 degree angle and hold all for 10 counts. Which is absolutely shocking, because this lesson is explaining all of those movements are just causing more flare and more damage. Thank you so much for the clarification!🙏🏽🌻

I really appreciate the more lengthy detailed video's with images. I have had this condition for 35 years not due to a posture issue but due to being in an abusive relationship where at just 22 years of age, this guy whom I couldn't get rid of grabbed me by the are and swung me into a brick wall at an Anne Murray concert because he was angry that I was in the bathroom too long. I was is peak shape and a gymnast and he ruined my career. I have spent my ENTIRE LIFE LIVING in EXCRUISCIATING PAIN and not able to even be in a vehicle with an erratic driver because I am in so much pain for 2 weeks afterward. I have had SEVERAL seizures where I get electric shock in my brain from all of the issues caused by the abuser, William Normand Perkoski in Irvine, California. Biggest mistake of my life was to give him rides home from work at midnight when I had to drive 9 miles to go pick him up when my job started at 8am at the bank. I NEVER KNEW how to tell ANYONE the word "NO." I am hoping to one day find a cure to all the pain and suffering I have had to endure and all the events I could have participated in like having a boyfriend and children. Anyway, sorry for the long dissertation people... hope you are all well.

Dr., thank you so much for being you! I have suffered with neck pain for many year's, experienced neck surgery, botox injections (for pain), steroid injections, PT, massage therapy; the list goes on! A pain specialist 'accidentally' burned a nerve leaving me unable to lift my arm for months. What hurt me most is that this Dr threw me to the curb, refusing to help me. You have given me the most logical information and explanation that makes sense in understanding how to deal with my situation. Thank you so much and wish you were geographically close to me. I would hope to be your patient.

The tables are mid thigh height, so Iwas constantlybent forward. I had such rounded shoulders that I could not even lie down on my back withoutmultiplepillowsand intense pain/cramping. 5 years ago, I started doing exercises like these and band work/small weights for my shoulders. I can now lie completely flat without pain, and I rarely have the arm pain and back spasms. Thank you for getting the word out there.
